RAINBOW MISTS

The small boat chugged through the mists, Diana standing at the bow. She shaded her eyes as she peered into the distance. Sound was muffled in the mists as fog wrapped itself around the boat. She shivered slightly as she watched eagerly for a sign.

Steve and Hal came out of the wheelhouse and waited silently with her, excitement in their faces, too. Not even a seagull could be heard and even the water lapping against the bow was muffled.

Diana was good at waiting. She had waited for a chance to deliver herself and her Sisters from bondage for four centuries. She could wait a little more.

Suddenly the mists parted and Paradise Island was seen shining like a jewel in the center of rainbow mists.

Hal hurried back to the wheelhouse and revved the engine. Steve came up behind Diana and put an arm around her shoulders.

“Home,” she said softly as her eyes sparkled.

Diana laughed and cried as she hugged her mother as Hippolyta reacted the same way. Dian hugged Mala and Paula and other Amazons, and Steve and Hal were welcomed as well. The procession up the steps carved into the cliff was triumphant as the Amazons welcomed their Princess back.

There was a feast in the Great Hall of the Palace. The fruits were lush and the sweets were sweet as Amazons played the harp, lyre, and lute. They danced in unbridled joy with grace, beauty and power. They had come back to their homeworld and their future was bright.

As the feasting and dancing continued, Hippolyta smiled at Diana on the dais. Steve and Hal had places of honor, too.

“I salute you, gentlemen, for helping my daughter in Man’s World.” She lifted her golden goblet in tribute.

“Our pleasure, Your Majesty,” said Hal as lifted his goblet.

Queen Hippolyta drank the wine and said, “Aphrodite and Athena have warned me that dark days are coming. Earth will need the Amazons’ skills at war.”

Steve and Hal exchanged looks as Diana nodded. “Yes, I fear the same.” She reached out and clasped her mother’s hand. “We are gathering heroes for great work, Mother.”

“Yes, I know.” Hippolyta smiled. “I have been able to look in on you occasionally, my Daughter.” At all if their startled expressions, she laughed. “Have no fear, my friends. Your privacy is safe. I scry only to see you in your public actions, my dear.” Three sighs of relief amused Hippolyta greatly.

Diana smiled. “Then you know the quality of those whom I have banded with, Mother.”

“I do.” Hippolyta squeezed Diana’s hand. “You will do fine with these people, my dear.” She looked out over the dance floor. “We are prepared.”

Diana nodded. “So are we, Mother.”

The Palace was finally quiet, a light breeze blowing through the halls and chambers, the light muslin curtains fluttering around Diana’s bed. She lay on the silken sheets as she gazed out through the window at the stars, listening to the sound of the sea. She combed her fingers through the hair of the men curled up around her as they slept peacefully.

She knew that trials were coming, but as she had told her mother, they were prepared. She looked down at her men and felt a twinge of fear.

If war comes, you will both be on the front lines. Her fingers tightened. Can I bear to lose either of you? She took a deep breath. I am a Warrior, as are they. We know that there are losses in battle. My heart will be hollow if I lose them, but I would never stop them from doing their duty, as they would not stop me.

Diana sighed. Life was not easy as she well knew but she was free now and would lead others to freedom. She would enjoy her time with Steve and Hal as she did. Kissing each man’s head, she settled down to sleep.

Moonlight poured into the bedroom of Wayne Manor as an exhausted Bruce slept in Clark’s arms. Clark was awake and listening to the soothing sounds of the ocean. The silvery light sparkled on the water and illuminated the bedroom.

Clark nuzzled Bruce’s hair and loved the scent of strawberry shampoo. It had been an exhausting night but a satisfying one. They had saved several people from becoming victims of crime and Clark had prevented a car accident.

He gazed upon Bruce’s face, the lines of worry and exhaustion smoothed out in sleep. Bruce was so beautiful, and he never tired of looking at him.

He reveled in the peace of the night. He cherished every moment of peace that they shared. Life was often hectic.

He tightened his hold slightly. Keeping Bruce and all his loved ones safe was important to him. Humans were so fragile.

Clark smiled. What would Bruce think of that?

He relaxed as he thought of how capable his family and friends were of taking care of themselves, but he would still keep an eye on them.

He fell asleep, glad to enjoy the calm before the storm.

Hippolyta looked grimly up at Destiny. The Goddess swirled in an array of rainbow mists, her pale blue eyes placid as silver-gold hair floated around her face. In that moment, Hippolyta hated her.

It was not Destiny’s fault. She was cursed with Seeing but could not Speak unless asked. Hippolyta knew some of the shape of the future, and it was inevitable that not all would survive.

But do I ask about the fate of my daughter and her Beloveds? Is it better to know or not know? They are all Warriors. They understand these things.

The temple was quiet, the brazier on the altar flanked by lit candles. Firelight flickered on the marble walls and pillars. Destiny waited patiently for the Queen to speak further questions.

Hippolyta bowed. “No more questions,” she whispered, and Destiny nodded and vanished into the rainbow mists.
