PATTERNS
Lois frowned as she studied the data on her computer screen. There was a pattern here. She ran the numbers again. She hated math but when she was digging out a story, she could stand playing around with numbers.
“Hey, Lois. Hot on a story?” Jimmy Olsen smiled as he darted up to her desk.
“I might be.”
“Man, I love your gig. Write bestsellers most of the time and then come in when you want to dig up a story.”
“Hey, Perry knows a good thing when he sees it.” Lois tapped her teeth with her stylus.
The newsroom of The Daily Planet was the usual controlled chaos: reporters answering ringing landlines and cellphones, pounding away on computer keyboards, Perry shouting for various reporters to come into his office, other reporters shouting for copyboys-and-girls, TV screens high up on the walls turned to various channels.
Novel-writing was a lucrative gig, but she sometimes missed this. A lot. Hence, the deal she had worked out with Perry, who was ecstatic to get the services of his Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter even part-time.
“So, what’s the story?” Jimmy perched one hip on the edge of her desk.
“Good try, Jimmy. What’s the matter, no action for Mr. Action?” Jimmy blushed and Lois laughed. “Why are you always embarrassed at that moniker?”
“Because it’s corny, that’s why.”
“It’s gotten you a byline.”
“I know. Still corny.” Jimmy’s cellphone rang. « Olsen. » He pushed off the desk. “Really? Thanks. I’ll be right down.” He closed up the phone. “Got a hot tip. See you later, Lois.”
“See ya, Mr. Action.”
Jimmy’s laughter drifted back to Lois as he hurried out of the newsroom.
She tapped a few keys and rested her chin in her hand. Finally, she rose from her chair and went into Perry’s office, barely avoiding a terrorized cub reporter as he dashed out. Lois smirked. Perry was in fine form today.
“Did you leave the kid a shred of dignity?”
Perry snorted. He pushed his desk chair back. “He’s lucky I didn’t drew-and-quarter him.”
Lois laughed. She sat down in the chair in front of Perry’s desk, crossing her shapely legs.
“I want an expense account activated.”
“For where?”
“Gotham.”
Perry looked at her shrewdly. “Bat-business?”
“Isn’t everything there?”
Perry smirked. “I’m sure you’ve got a hot story cookin’.”
"Don't I always?”
Guffawing, Perry waved at Lois. “Get it set up.”
“Thanks, Chief.”
As Lois left his office, Perry yelled, “And don’t call me Chief!”
Lois smirked as she disappeared into the newsroom.
& & & & & &
Spring was coming, but Gotham rarely allowed it to come too fast. She preferred cold, dark days and frigid nights rather than warm spring days and nights.
Lois had dressed warmly: black shirt, pants, and jacket, her hair tucked up underneath a black knit cap. Black sneakers were on her feet.
She zipped up her jacket as a strong wind blew. Lois looked down at the city beneath her, twinkling lights illuminating Gotham’s gloom.
Here on the Clock Tower, the parapet was wide enough to roam around comfortably, the old clock looming high over her head. Five minutes to midnight.
A rustle of air swept over her and she looked up. The impression of red-and-black washed over her and she heard the light thump of boots on the gargoyle above.
Only in Gotham would a Clock Tower host gargoyles.
“Thanks for meeting me.” Lois could hear the Bat-cape whipping around up and behind her.
“I’m always open to help to fight injustice, Ms. Lane.”
Lois wanted to turn around but restrained herself. Coolness was best when dealing with Bats.
Her patience was rewarded as the Bat lightly jumped down in front of her.
Batwoman was impressive close up. Tall and muscular, like an Amazon, and as shapely as one. Red hair swirled around her face, her eyes hidden by the opaque white lenses.
Her black-and-red costume fit her perfectly, and Lois felt a stirring deep inside her. Beautiful women were her weakness, for sure.
The black cape flowed out behind Batwoman dramatically, framed by Gotham.
Ah, the stuff of dreams.
Lois reached into her large handbag. “I have some information you might find interesting.”
Batwoman’s gloved hand took the files and opened the top folders. Ruby-red lips pursed as she read.
Lois reacted to her obvious sexuality. Batwoman must use it in her war against crime. Why not use all your assets? A man would.
Lois would not mind if Batwoman used some of those assets on her.
“These numbers…they indicate a pattern.”
Lois nodded. “Gotham, Metropolis, Boston, New York, Central City, Star City, San Francisco…all are showing the same thing: a spike in slave-smuggling. All in the last three years.”
“Could be just a trend.”
“Could be, but why a special spike in activity when slave-smuggling has always been around?”
“It’s organized.”
“That’s what I thought, too: city-to-city. Most smuggling rings usually operate within one city or in one region. We haven’t seen nation-wide rings as often.”
“No.” Batwoman was quickly scanning through the other files. “But only because the criminals involved haven’t chosen to go that route.”
“Lucky for law enforcement.”
“Hmm.” Batwoman closed the folders. “From this schedule of deliveries, I’d say Gotham should expect a new shipment within the week.”
“Should you consult with your partners?”
“Partners?”
“The Dynamic Duo?”
Batwoman laughed as a new voice floated down to her and Lois.
“No need for Bats and the Boy Wonder.”
Lois and Batwoman looked up to see a smiling Catwoman perched on the gargoyle.
