SEETHING

Kara texted back to her contact, annoyed that there was a change in plans, but nothing could be done about it.

Now she had free time. Signing, she left the café and wandered outside, inevitably drifting down to the Gotham Courthouse.

The demonstrators were still screaming at each other. Humans seemed to have an inexhaustible supply of energy fueled by hate.

One of the pro-slavery group, a middle-aged woman with a broad face, contorted her expression as she yelled, “You Abos are trying to bring down decent society! What’ll you think will happen if slaver’s abolished? We’ll have immoral whores running around, breaking up families by tempting our men!”

“Oh, please!” snorted a thin blond woman on the other side. “Don’t blame slaves for freemen’s wandering eyes.”

“Are you a whore-lover?”

“Nasty mouth on you, woman!”

“At least I don’t kiss slaves with it!”

“Why don’t you mind your own House?”

“Morality must be upheld!”

“How can you call a slave society moral?”

“It’s ordained by God, you idiot!”

The blond sneered, “Your Holy Book was written centuries ago. Why are we still following ancient societies?”

“Morality is immutable, no matter what the century.”

“So slavery is divine?”

“Of course! The Book Of The Word shows slavery as a natural thing. The Old Patriarchs kept slaves. It’s the natural order of things.”

“The Old Patriarchs used to forbid the eating of shellfish and cutting their hair, too.”

“That wouldn’t be so bad, would it?”

The blond rolled her eyes. “Your Church has warped your brain!”

“Shut up, whore-lover!” shouted a man with wild eyes. He picked up a rock and flung it at the courthouse, shattering the window. Each side surged forward, shouting and punching. The police waded in but were outnumbered.

Kara watched coolly. The level of hatred was truly impressive. Humans had fire, she had to give them that.

The riot was starting to spiral out of control. Kara could have easily stopped it, but she could not risk exposing herself.

Besides, she didn’t care enough to try.

Hayley cried out as the glass showered over her, cutting into her flesh. Kathy dashed forward after the glass had stopped spraying, her high heels crunching on broken glass.

“Hayley!”

Kathy leaned over the witness box. Hayley groaned.

“Can you get up?”

“Yeah. How bad am I?”

Kathy looked at the cuts on her friend’s arms and hands. Thank goodness she had protected her face.

“Not bad, but we’d better get you to a hospital.”

“Sorry, folks, we’re not going anywhere. There’s a full-scale riot going on out there,” said the bailiff, looking out the side window. “Jurors, with me!”

The bailiff led the frightened jurors out of the room. They had ducked down in the box, some reluctant to leave their relative safety, but the howls of the crowd outside convinced them to follow the officer.

“Spectators, follow our other bailiffs out, please,” said M’Butu, heading for the back room as Kathy took hold of Hayley’s arm.

Bruce ran forward to help, wondering if Batman could make an appearance but could not see how he could slip away. He hoped the GCPD could handle it.

“Thanks, Bruce,” Kathy said as he helped her with a woozy Hayley.

Kara deflected a rock before it hit a young girl’s head. “Better take her out of here, ma’am,” she said to the girl’s mother. The woman nodded and hurried away with her child.

The riot was in full swing. Kara observed the techniques of the local police. Not bad…

“Okay, that’s enough!”

The commanding tones of Green Lantern rang out over the crowd, all of whom looked up in astonishment. The Emerald Warrior hovered in the air, his mouth set in a grim line, his Ring glowing.

“Break it up now and go home!”

One of the Word men shook his fist. “Like hell we will! Go back to Oa!”

His fellow congregants took up the chant but Green Lantern was unfazed, a beam of green light coming out of his Ring and forming a pincer, picking the man up. The church-goer kicked furiously, his arms pinioned to his sides.

“Let me down!” he squeaked.

“Just cool off,” Green Lantern said.

Down below, the police were restoring some semblance of order. Green Lantern drifted down, releasing the man as the church member’s feet touched concrete.

“So there you go, ladies and gentlemen. Cool heads are best.”

The police began leading off the demonstrators in handcuffs as Green Lantern kept an eye on the crowd.

Kara watched the Green Lantern. She was surprised. She had always heard that the Guardians of Oa considered this Galaxy a primitive backwater unworthy of their attention.

Interesting that the Lantern’s home base was Earth, out of all the planets in the Empire. Perhaps he would be an ally in the Rebellion.

If not, he better get out of the way.

Kara left the courthouse area as the sounds of protest faded.
