The rest of the week passed fairly quickly; DG made sure all the bills were paid and she'd given Michael, Barb and Sasha the number to the bakery in case of an emergency, not that she'd be able to get back the message until they returned. Friday afternoon, however, took the cake for being one of the more interesting days in DG's recent life.

"So, we'll be back on Sunday," DG said to Sasha as she put papers into the file cabinet. Sasha nodded and waited for DG to turn around before setting the box on her desk. "What's this?" DG asked. Sasha simply shook her head and motioned for DG to open the box.

DG sat down in her chair and pulled the box closer. Sasha sat down and tried not to smile as DG took the lid off and pushed the tissue paper aside. She could see the bluish-purple, but it still took a second for DG to realize what she was looking at. Her eyes went wide and she dropped the lid on the desk before leaning back.

"Oh... nono..." DG shook her head and prayed she wasn't blushing too much.

"What?" Sasha shrugged. "You should have a good vacation and that's not why you're going, is it?" Sasha amended as she registered the look on DG's face. "Oh," she stated with a slight laugh.

"It's my sister’s birthday, Sash. We're visiting family. That's it," DG added, a bit more forcefully than necessary. What on Earth gave Sasha the idea she and Cain were... well...

DG leaned back in her chair and looked at her friend as Sasha shook her head. "Huh... okay," she said with a shrug.

"Really, Sash? I say vacation and that's what-" Sasha leaned forward and pointed to DG.

"Can you blame me?" DG blinked as Sasha reared back. "After that display?" she added, motioning to the garden.

"What display?" DG asked, thoroughly confused.

"The gala," Sasha said pointedly. "Everybody and their brother saw it."

"Saw what?" DG asked back.

"Uh, you two," Sasha said, as if the answer was obvious.

DG made a face and shook her head. "We talked for a total five minutes, all night. And danced once." Sasha raised an eyebrow. "Okay, once and a half."

Sasha leaned over the desk and looked DG in the eye. "Honey, that wasn't dancing. That was sex, set to music." DG blinked again and was drawing a complete blank. Sure, it was a good dance - No, it was really good - but it was still Cain.

'Cain who you wish liked you like that...'
'I do not.'
'Do.'
'Don't!'
'Do.'

DG stared that the box for a moment then looked up to Sasha with a frown. "Wow," Sasha said as she straightened. "You really do need a vacation." As she moved around the desk, Sasha leaned over to give DG a hug. "Have a good time." Nodding toward the box, Sasha gave DG a smile and left DG to continue staring at the box.

DG took the box home that night, simply because she didn't want to leave it at work. She shoved the box into the closet when she got home and shook her head again as she thought about what Sasha said. Cain and her? No... No. Nonononono. DG flinched as she tried to push the thoughts away.

And then she had a flash of them at the party. Everything had gone fuzzy at some point while they danced and her breath caught - that part she did remember. She'd been close to Cain before, but never that close. And then she remembered the hug in the middle of the night; the one she still wasn't sure had really happened or not.

Shaking her head to clear the memory, DG turned her mind to dinner and packing and moved out into the front room. There was no way to get into the park before sunrise on Monday morning, so she and Cain discussed a few options. One was to just go one the park opened and hope that no one spotted the travel storm.

Another was to head east, out toward the desert, but DG didn't want to make Simon drive that far. In the end, it was decided they just go through the park. DG hoped she could control the thing, but didn't tell Cain she was concerned. After all, with both of them there, would the storm follow DG or Cain? She should probably tell him her full plan, but by the time he got back to the apartment, she'd completely forgotten.

"You all packed?" DG asked, dishing up a plate of chicken and rice and passing it over the sink to Cain, who was sitting at the counter. He took the plate and nodded to his backpack, which was sitting in front of the bookshelf. "Clean underwear?" she asked in a mocking tone, getting a dirty look from Cain.

"Are you packed?" he asked after taking a bite of his dinner. DG passed another plate across the sink and stepped back to get glasses. Cain set DG's plate down next to his and took another bite, making a face in response to the face she made.

"Yes, actually. Except for my toothbrush." Cain looked up to DG as she came around the counter with two glasses and set both glasses down on the counter. "Good?" she asked, nodding to the plate. Cain nodded and took another bite. This was one of the few dishes DG could make without screwing up before she went to the Zone, and she was rather glad to see that the meal-in-a-box was still being sold when she returned.

DG stared at her plate for a moment, wondering how her parents would react upon her arrival. She wouldn't blame them for tying her to a chair, honestly. But she hoped they would understand her commitment to the museum and allow her to leave. It would make for a very awkward visit if she had to sneak out of the palace at the end of the week.

She blinked and looked at Cain, who had just nudged her arm. "You okay?" he asked with a frown. DG nodded and set down her fork.

"Yeah, just..." she motioned to her head. "Actually," she said, spinning on the stool and standing up. "I found the coolest thing for Az." Cain watched DG move over to the desk, pick something up and move back toward him.

DG shook out the shirt and held it up for Cain to see. It was lime green and had the phrase BECAUSE I SAID SO... printed across the front in black letters. "What do you think?" DG asked, glancing down to the shirt and back up to Cain with a smile.

"Very nice," Cain said with a smile and looked back to his plate. DG quickly refolded the shirt and placed it back on the desk.

"I'll wrap it tomorrow," she said, moving back to the counter and her own plate.

"You sure you're okay?" Cain asked as DG sat down again. DG poked at a piece of chicken with her fork and nodded.

"I'm going home," she said quietly, then looked up to Cain with a half-smile. "I just wish there was an easier way."

"You don't like travel storms?" he asked, reaching for his glass and taking a sip of water.

"I don't like tornadoes," DG said, shaking her head vehemently then forcing a smile. Cain nodded, knowing he'd never understand the force of nature as travel storms were common in the Zone, and nowhere near as destructive as they seemed to be on this side.

"You can hold my hand," he said with a single nod. DG looked at him with blank stare and breathed a laugh. "Just don't tell anyone," he added with a cheeky grin.
