Unexpected Cain was sitting on the couch watching television when DG got home from work that night. He'd only been back about an hour himself, and had already showered and read the next chapter of his textbook. "Hey," she said cheerfully, pushing the door shut behind her. Cain flipped off the TV and leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees.
"Place still standing?" DG nodded and flipped through the mail, laughing at the idea of the place crashing to the ground. Looking up a moment later, she turned to look at Cain. Narrowing her eyes slightly, she looked to the wall just behind his head.
"What?" Cain asked, knowing her gears were turning.
DG let go of the mail and pointed to Cain. "Get dressed." Cain frowned and looked down, trying to figure out what DG meant. He was dressed; he'd been dressed all day. Well, except for the shower. DG shook her head and moved over to him, waving him up.
"Pretend you're having dinner with my mother," she said, hauling him to his feet and pushing him toward the bathroom. Cain pulled his arm free and stopped DG, giving her look of absolute confusion. Pointing toward her closet, she continued: "The blue or the black, I don't care. We're celebrating."
Cain threw his hands up in defeat and shook his head. A moment later, he breezed past her with a jacket and shirt. He'd paid enough attention in the five months he'd been on this side to know that he wasn't supposed to wear the blue jacket with the black jeans, nor the black jacket with the brown pants. But, apparently, he could wear either jacket with the blue jeans.
DG pushed her door shut behind him and he moved into the bathroom. As he pulled the t-shirt over his head, Cain realized that DG had far too much control over his free-will.
About five minutes later, Cain was staring at the four pairs of pants in his current possession - not counting the pair of blue jeans he was wearing - trying to figure out which was the best to wear with the shirt and the jacket. Maybe he should switch to the black jacket and wear the black pants. But then he'd have to change the shirt, he realized.
"What am I doing?" he asked the empty room a moment later. If he was having dinner with the Queen, he'd be in the Zone. He'd also, most likely, be wearing his own clothes. He wondered if Hank and Emily had burned his clothes five months ago. Three weeks to go and his hat had better be untouched...
He heard DG's door open, but he didn’t see her. Assuming she had moved into the bathroom, Cain turned his head toward the doorway. "What are we celebrating, Princess?"
"The success of the Huntington!" he heard, echoing from the bathroom.
"And I have to change my clothes for that?" he asked with a grunt, holding the brown pants up again.
"Oh, you'll surv-" DG said, appearing from around the corner, trying to pull her hair loose from the chain of her necklace. Her breath caught slightly at the sight of Cain. Her words from Christmas echoed in her mind and she fought to laugh at the irony. When she'd told him the blue jacket and the striped shirt would work well together, she didn't actually picture it.
Well, at least not on Cain.
She blinked and forced her gaze to the pants he had set out just as Cain shook his head and dropped the brown pants back down to the couch. He glanced up and gave her the slightest double-take. His gaze shot back down to the couch as well and he fidgeted slightly.
Her skirt was the lightest shade of brown, and flowy. Her blouse was light pink and... and she was surely going to be the death of him. "None of this is appropriate for dinner with the Queen," he motioned to the pants and the jacket, trying not to focus on DG.
She threw up a hand and moved around the counter into the kitchen. "Please, you look fantastic." Cain looked at his pillow and let a smile slip. 'Focus, Tin Man,' he told himself. 'Don't go there.' Of course, Cain knew he would go there. He’d been going there for a while now. Whether he wanted to or not. Sometimes, he wondered how much of the 'or not' was changing sides.
Telling himself it was just overflow from the party, Cain shook the thoughts away and looked up to DG, who was moving back around the counter. "So the event was a success?" he asked, figuring conversation would help distract him from thinking about DG in any way but as DG.
DG gave him a wide smile and raised her hands slightly. "Wow," she said simply. Nodding to the door, DG strode over and reached for the handle. Then turned back for her bag - she hated bags, but had come to realize that she didn't have enough pockets to carry all her necessary crap. Pulling out her wallet and her door key, she turned back to Cain. "Can I borrow your pocket?"
Cain made a face and held his hand out to take the items. She smiled, handed him the wallet but kept the keys to lock the door behind her. She moved to the door again and held it open for him to pass. "It's a little early, I know," she mused, pulling the door shut behind her and locking it.
"It's fine," Cain said, allowing her to take the stairs first. She looked back to Cain about halfway down the stairs.
"So, tonight's your night," she said with a smirk. "What are you in the mood for? Pasta? Steak?" Cain reached up and held the door open as DG stepped out onto the sidewalk.
"What do I have to do with the success of the Huntington?" he asked with a frown. DG smirked and looked away. Turning back to him, DG locked her arm around his and pulled him along.
"Let's just say... you made an impression." She smiled and looked up to Cain, who was glaring at her. Why did he have the feeling Coop had something to do with this? DG laughed and looked across the street, enjoying being outside while the sun was still up. As they crossed the street and passed the bus stop, Cain nudged DG slightly with his elbow.
"You look very nice," he said off-handedly, not averting his gaze. DG nodded and laughed again.
"Thank you. It's not exactly Central City high fashion, but... And you!" she exclaimed, pulling away from him and waving from his head to toe. "I told you this would work."
"Wait," Cain said, catching DG's hand and stopping her. "I get 'groped by Coop'," he quoted Josh. "Helping you raise money for your museum. And, to thank me for this, I now have to pay for dinner?"

Steve's been busy today...
Forgive me
n_e_star. Blue Ice got a bit of a shove. I blame the class assignment.
If it helps any, though... the SECOND appearance is AWESOME ;)
EDIT: I forgot the
picture. It is my favorite Zooey picture EVER. I was gonna use it on a fanmix, but after the great HD crash of May 08... *le sigh*
