Unexpected Cain glanced up from the flower bed and saw the group of young men moving across the lawn. He noted that they all appeared to be about Jeb's age and laughed as he imagined Jeb as a student. For the next hour, Cain would glance up and watch the boys tossing a brown mass around, tackling each other and laughing and shouting.
"Heads!" he heard at one point and was surprised by a thunk just on the other side of the bucket next to him. Cain looked over and noticed the brown and white... thing and dropped the small shovel into the dirt before reaching for the mass. Standing up, he gave the thing a look and nodded toward one of the boys before chucking it back.
"Thanks!" one of the other boys yelled as another ran back to catch a perfectly-passed football. Cain shook his head and laughed as he heard the boys arguing about an extra point for going out of bounds.
'Kids...'
About twenty minutes later, Cain noticed the boys were packing up and he glanced at the watch Simon had given him for Christmas. Noticing a new shadow, Cain looked up to see one of the boys standing in front of him.
"Sorry about earlier," the brunette said with a wave to the new plants. "We didn't do too much damage, I hope." Cain smiled and shook his head. "I'm Josh," the boy said, holding out his hand. Cain pulled off his glove and took the offered hand.
"Wyatt."
"You're in my history class, right?" Josh asked, pointing to Cain. Cain squinted slightly as he tried to place the boy.
"It is possible." Of course, there were about fifty people in the class. Josh threw a look back to his friends and then looked back down to Cain.
"Well, sorry again," he said with a nod. "See ya in class." Cain nodded in return and laughed as he went back to digging in the dirt.
A few days later, Cain was sitting in the lecture hall, waiting for class to begin, when Josh found him. Sliding into the seat next to Cain, Josh smiled and stated: "So, the guys and I were pretty impressed with that arm you've got..." Cain's eyes darted down toward said arm for a moment then back up to Josh, who was pulling a notebook from his backpack.
"If you ever want to join the game, we usually play once a week." Cain said nothing, but he did nod. "You play football, y'know," Josh asked with a wave. "Before?" he added, hoping he didn't offend Cain.
"Never," Cain said after a moment, making sure to remember to ask Simon about football. Josh turned to fully face Cain.
"Really?" Cain just shrugged and Josh turned back toward the front of the hall. "Huh."
-*-
"Guys, this is Wyatt," Josh motioned between Cain and the other boys. "Wyatt, these are the guys. Mike, Trent, Scott, Billy, Randy," he said, each of the nodding or giving Cain a wave. Cain nodded to each of them as Josh nudged his arm and pointed behind them. "And this is also Mike," he said, indicating the youth coming down the stairs.
"But we call him Scooter, 'cause it pisses him off," Trent said with a laugh. Scooter-Mike gave Josh a smack on the arm and nodded to Cain.
"Ah, the arm," he said with a smile and held out a hand. "Mike."
"Wyatt."
Scooter-Mike turned back to everyone and shrugged. "We gonna play, ladies?"
The guys all moved away and Josh walked with Cain. Pointing to Other-Mike and Scott, Josh stated: "The four of us on one team, everyone else on the other. We don't play real ball, obviously," he said with a laugh. "But you should be fine. You get the ball, chuck it to one of us or head for the touchdown," he added, pointing to the other end of the lawn.
Josh gave Cain a look and Cain nodded. Simon had given him a rough idea of the game - the hardest part of the discussion had been Cain's lack of understanding as to the name.
"Why is it called football? No one's using their feet..."
"Well, everywhere else in the world, football is soccer."
Cain raised an eyebrow. "What's soccer?"
"Round ball, no hands," Simon said as he unloaded a sack of flour from the truck.
"So football is soccer..." Cain nodded.
"Unless you're here. Then football is football and soccer is soccer."
"Why don't you just call it handball, then?"
"Because handball is a whole other game." Cain reached into the truck for the other sack of flour and frowned.
"Okay guys," Josh said as he moved to his spot. "Go easy on Wyatt. He's not familiar with the game."
One of the guys - Cain hadn't figured them out yet past two were Mike - asked: "Seriously?" Cain shrugged and the guys all nodded.
By the end of the hour, Cain had pretty much figured the game out and helped his team win by seven... though he still wasn't sure how.
