Unexpected WENN last we met: "What-" She shushed Josh and kept an eye on Cain and DG. "Mom?" Josh asked quietly.
"This is better than Days."
DG moved closer to the door and turned to face Cain. He had her full attention and he knew it.
"What?" Cain finally asked, as he was getting uncomfortable with the look on her face. She shrugged and he reached into his jacket pocket with a huff. He reached for DG's hand and placed his student ID in her palm. As she registered what the card said, DG looked up to Cain.
"Oh my God..." she said with surprise. "When did you go to college?" Cain huffed again and placed his hands on his hips. He threw a look back to Josh and then turned back to DG.
"It's one lecture, twice a week. That's all," he said defensively.
"Why didn't you tell me?" DG demanded, slapping Cain across the chest.
"Ow," he said with a laugh, catching her hand as he jerked away.
"Seriously, Cain. I mean, this is cool," she said with a nod, holding up the ID. "But do you remember the conversation we had?" She frowned and continued: "We're a team here," she said, giving him a thump on the chest with her free hand, and both of them realized Cain was still holding her other hand. "You're supposed to be able to tell me this stuff," she said after Cain let go of her hand.
"I mean," she said, leaning close and dropping her voice. "What if I got hit by a bus and I'm only conscious long enough to tell them you might be plating a tree and you're actually in a classroom, killing a tree?" Cain smiled as DG rambled and finally grabbed her shoulders.
Leaning down to her eye-level, Cain sighed. "I'm sorry."
"Were you gonna tell me?" she asked with a pout. "Or was I gonna find out when the diploma showed up?" Cain's brow furrowed as he didn't know what she was talking about.
"I thought we agreed that I get simple words," Cain said pointedly.
"Oh, I've got some simple words," DG said with a snort. "But there are children present," she added with a fake smile. Cain gave her a stern glare and they both broke into a laugh after a moment. Cain turned to look back at Josh and rolled his eyes at the look on the boy's face.
"So, what class are you-" DG asked, causing Cain to turn back to her.
"United States history," he replied. "Figured it might help me to understand you." DG laughed and squeezed Cain's arm and she shook her head.
"There's no class for that, Cain." A beeping sound drew everyone's attention to Josh, including the two people reading in the back corner. Josh's mom slapped him as he pulled the phone out.
"Sorry!" he whispered loudly as he flipped the phone open, smiled at the message and closed the phone. Nodding to Cain, Josh held up the phone and said: "Scrimmage in ten." He reached for both bags and his mom frowned.
"What about your homework?" Josh turned to his mother as he passed Cain's bag over and waved to the room.
"The books'll be here tomorrow." He turned away from the daggers his mother was shooting at both of them. "You seen this guy throw a football, Dee?" DG raised an eyebrow. "Classic." He nodded to Cain and headed for the door. Cain finally looked at DG and gave her a cheeky smile before shrugging and following Josh.
DG glanced at Josh's mom and shook her head. 'Wait,' she thought and darted out of the library. "Cain!" she yelled across the lobby of the visitor's center, ignoring the look from the lady at the desk. He turned back and she threw up her arms. "How did you register?"
Cain shrugged again and smiled as Josh pulled on his bag. "Simon." DG's mouth hung open in surprise as Josh and Cain disappeared out the main entrance. She'd have to have a chat with good ol' Simon. Shaking her head, DG laughed at the image of Cain playing football currently running through her head.
'Work, class and football? Oh my...'
-*-
As Cain and Josh headed back through the North gate, Josh kept shooting glances at Cain. "How do you know my mom?" Cain hitched a thumb over his shoulder.
"She's employed at the- My first day in town, I spent a few hours in the library. My third day, many more. We spoke."
"About?"
"You, actually. And my son." Josh's jaw dropped; he didn't know Cain had a son. "He's about your age," Cain said with a nod as they turned the corner. Josh jumped a few steps ahead and stopped, holding out a hand to stop Cain.
With the straightest face he could muster, Josh prodded: "Are you gonna be my new daddy?" Cain reached over to smack him, but Josh laughed and ducked away. "So," he continued as they crossed the street and turned another corner. "How do you know Dee?"
"DG?" Cain asked and took a deep breath. "I've known her for a few an- years," he frowned. Josh stopped and opened his mouth then shut it again. Cain stopped and looked back over his shoulder as Josh pointed to him.
"You're the cop." Cain blinked and sighed. How many people had DG told about him?
"Yeah. I’m the cop." Josh nodded and resumed his pace down the sidewalk. "How do you know DG?" Cain asked a moment later.
Josh hitched a thumb over his shoulder and repeated Cain's earlier words. "My mother is employed at the-" he stopped with a laugh as Cain reached for him again and jumped a few feet to the side to get away.
