Unexpected DG stuck her head out of her bedroom at the sound of the front door. Cain gave her a nod as she stepped out, freshly dressed and drying her hair with a towel. "Where'd you go?"
"I figured you needed some sugar," he said, holding up the bag before setting it on the counter. "And I have a new jacket," he added, laying the jacket and tie across the coffee table. DG smiled as she reached for the bag and looked into it.
"Yum," she said, seeing the pecan rolls and moved around the counter to get plates. Cain picked up his notebook and moved over to the counter, pulling the stool out slightly so he could sit down. He gave DG a thankful smile as she passed a plated roll over the sink and he opened the notebook. DG took a bite of her own pecan roll and cocked her head to one side.
It was now or never.
She moved around Cain and into her bedroom, stopping at the nightstand next to the bed. She pulled open the drawer and reached inside, withdrawing a card, an envelope and a pen. Moving back into the front room, DG pulled out the stool next to Cain. She opened the card and slid it over Cain's notes.
Blinking as DG's hand came into view, Cain glanced from DG back down to the card. He saw the words 'Happy Birthday' printed in bold letters and glanced back up to DG. She held up the pen and nodded to the card. "Sign that, would ya?" Cain took the pen from her and scribbled his name. "So, Spring Break is in three weeks..." she fished.
Cain looked back up to her and passed the pen back. "Yes."
DG took a deep breath and tapped the pen on the counter a few times. "And you work?" she asked, hoping he said 'No'.
"No, actually," Cain said, leaning back from the counter. "Ron worked the schedule so I could spend the week studying," he stated, tapping the notebook. The big mid-term was the day after break ended.
"So, you're free all week?" Cain raised an eyebrow and gave DG a look. "If I swear to help you study..." Cain’s eyes narrowed as DG folded the birthday card closed. As he glanced at the cartoon on the front, it was the words across the image that made his head shoot up.
