Cain followed Josh through the gate into the backyard. As Josh moved around the house, Cain took a look at all the things stuck into the flowerbeds and hanging from the trees and on the fence. He'd seen one or two similar items in Jeanie's garden, but this was ridiculous.

Raising an eyebrow as Josh pushed the glass door aside, Cain followed him inside and found himself standing in a kitchen with nearly as much hanging on the walls. "Mom," Josh said - Cain could see Josh's mom standing in front of the oven.

"Mom. Mom. Mom. Mo-om," he pushed, forcing Cain to hold back a laugh at the look she shot Josh.

"You are twenty years old, Joshua. Why must you act like you're five?" Josh made a face and rolled his eyes. "What?" she asked with a snap, returning her focus to the pot on the stovetop in front of her.

"Can Wyatt come over to study?" She blinked and gave Cain a look, similar to the one he was giving Josh. She rolled her eyes and shook her head, returning to the pot. Josh sighed and turned to Cain, waving for him to follow.

Cain gave Josh's mom a polite nod as he passed and followed Josh upstairs. As they went up the stairs, Cain looked at the photos plastered along the wall and Cain found himself sad for not seeing Jeb at the same stages of childhood.

Of course, photos in the Zone weren't that common to begin with. 'Just give DG time,' he thought off-handedly as Josh pushed into the room at the end of the hall. Cain wondered if it was an inherited trait, because Josh's walls and bookshelves were covered as well. He could see large pictures of the ocean and, in the corner, stood what Cain could only assume was a fake tree.

Josh was a true California-boy - surfer at heart. The posters on the walls were of various beaches around the world, surfers and waves. He also had posters from the surf movies of the sixties and his prize possession: the fake palm tree he had salvaged from the school's beach party when he was in the fifth grade. There was a surfboard leaning in the corner, a poorly-hung hammock which was currently serving as a hanging chair, tiki heads and a Polynesian design on the comforter.

Josh waved to the desk and Cain set down his bag, continuing to look at the items on the shelves. Josh perused the CD rack, pulled out a case and pushed the power button on his CD player, bopping his head to a silent tune as the tray opened.

Cain gave up on the bookshelf and dropped into the desk chair as Josh turned and made the motions of directing the music, dramatically acting out the drums a moment later. Satisfied with the tune, Josh reached for his bag and pulled out his notebook before situating himself in the hammock.

"This test should be a breeze, ya think?" Cain said nothing as he pulled out his own notebook. "I mean, it's always the big test that's a killer, right?" he asked with a nod. Cain shrugged and found himself staring at the picture hanging over the bed. Josh followed his gaze and smiled.

"Isn't that a wicked barrel?" He hauled out of the hammock and jumped on the bed, taking a surf stance. "I'd kill to catch that wave..." he mused, staring off into space. Sighing, Josh dropped his arms and fell to the bed. Reaching back to move his pillow, Josh adjusted himself and crossed his ankles, leaning back against the headboard.

"Know what I mean?" Cain shook his head and Josh shot up into a sitting position. "You've never been surfing?" he asked with shock. Cain simply shrugged and looked back to his notebook. Josh made some strange noises and shook his head as he climbed off the bed and returned to the hammock.

"Dude. We're so taking you surfing." Cain smiled and laughed, still looking at his notes.

"Let's pass this test first, Josh." Josh nodded and looked down to his own notes.

Josh and Cain moved into the kitchen and Josh bee-lined for the fridge as Cain nodded to Mom, once again. "Uh huh," she said into the phone, giving both of them a look. "I think that can be arranged... Yes... all right. Bye," she finally said, pulling the phone away from her ear. Raising an eyebrow at Josh, he frowned and looked to Cain quickly.

"What?" He wasn't going to like this. She gave him a shrug and set the phone down on the table before putting on a 'you can't say no'-smile. Josh considered the look on her face for a second and glanced toward the calendar hanging on the wall.

Eyes wide, he turned back to her and shook his head. "Not gonna happen. Uh uh..." he added, waving his hands in the air. "I have... class... and... stuff." He shot a glance to Cain, whose face was blank. "We have to study," he added a moment later, shooting Cain a glance that begged agreement.

Mom huffed and shook her head. "Joshua, I ask you for one thing all year-"

Josh jumped forward and pointed to her. "No. You promised that last year was it. I was done." Mom shook her head and rolled her eyes at Cain. Josh spun around and looked at Cain. "Dude, it's torture. Cruel and-" He spun back to look at his mom. "-inhuman torture."

"He's going," Mom said simply. Cain blinked and looked at Josh's mom as Josh stared at him. She nodded and Cain glanced up to the ceiling, as if whatever they were talking about was written there.

"You're kidding?" Josh breathed. Cain shrugged and threw another glance to Mom.

"The gala at the Huntington," she said with a short nod. Cain blinked once and turned to Josh with a nod.

"Dude..." Josh said, shaking his head slowly.

"What?" Cain asked with a shrug. "DG asked me to go." He didn't understand what the big deal was. DG told him she had to go and that it was going to be about as exciting as the parties in the Zone - though less formal - and he was more than welcome to attend.

He could tell DG was practically begging for him to agree to attend, if all else, for her own sanity. And, having been to some of the parties in the Zone, Cain was curious.

"And if she asked you to jump off a cliff, would ya?" Josh snapped. Cain laughed.

"I've already pushed her off a cliff once," Cain shrugged. Josh gave him a look and shook his head.

"Did she cover the part where you won't be there as a guest?" Cain frowned and glanced at Josh’s mom, who shook her head at Josh's comment. "You're gonna be working," Josh nodded.

"Old ladies. Grabby hands."
