Unexpected Cain walked into Lowry's bakery and nodded toward Simon, who was standing behind the register. Jeanie was behind the opposite counter, helping a customer, but she gave Cain a smile. "Good morning, dear," she said before looking back to the woman in front of her and smiling.
"Two of these, please," the woman said, pointing to one of the racks behind the glass and shifted her bag on her arm while looking at the other items in the case as Jeanie boxed up the pastries. Jeanie passed the box across the counter and then stepped back to get Cain a cup of coffee.
He nodded to the woman as she passed by and moved over to Simon to pay for her breakfast. "Having fun yet?" Jeanie asked, knowing Cain was in day four of sheer boredom. Much as he was enjoying experiencing the Other Side, he felt rather useless.
"Hmm," he said with a forced grin as she passed the cup over the counter. She laughed and stepped around the counter then disappeared into the back. Cain moved over to see what Simon was up to and set his cup down next to the register before leaning against the counter, resting on his arms.
"Any luck?" Cain asked, glancing at the newspaper Simon had just pulled from under the counter.
"Well..." Simon shook his head slightly. "Lookin' at your specific skill set," he said with a raised eyebrow. "Not so much." He turned the paper around so that Cain could see the page of job openings. There were a few squares circled, but not many.
He hadn't been sure about telling Simon the truth, but DG insisted. She told him that it would be best to have someone on their 'side', in case of an emergency. And, if anyone would understand, it would be a sci-fi fan. Cain didn't understand, but she assured him that it was a good thing. Simon had many questions for Cain about the Zone, most of which Cain couldn't answer because he, again, didn't understand.
"Is there something you want to do?" Simon asked, stepping around the counter and moving across the bakery to refill his own coffee cup. Cain pushed up and turned around. Leaning against the counter, he crossed his arms and looked at the ceiling.
"I honestly don't even know what I can do anymore," Cain said, shaking his head. Simon gave him a supportive nod and gave his coffee a moment to cool. "I've spent the last three annuals making my son's life miserable.” Simon laughed quietly and nodded with Cain. "And other than a week of trying to keep her alive," Cain motioned toward DG's apartment. "I spent nearly ten annuals wishing I would just die." Simon looked up to Cain and frowned then his eyes went wide.
"You were the one in the-" It hadn't occurred to Simon that of all the characters in DG's stories, Cain was the one in the suit. All she had told him was that one of her friends had been locked up in a suit and then she only ever talked about the cop and the scientist and the psychic. When they sat down to discuss his abilities, Cain mentioned being a Tin Man, so Simon associated Cain with the cop.
Cain opened his mouth to respond but was interrupted by Jeanie, who'd just returned to the front of the store. "Boys, can you make a delivery? Or will it take time out of your busy schedules?" she added, seeing Simon next to the coffee pot. Simon set his cup down on the counter and nodded to his wife.
"Where are we headed, dear?" Jeanie raised a finger and stepped back for a moment, reaching for the tag on the box. She glanced over the receipt and nodded once.
"Pee Cee Cee. The alumni building." Simon nodded and pushed off the counter, waving to Cain to follow him. After about twenty minutes, Simon found a place to park and Cain hopped out of the passenger side of the truck.
"Too bad you can't drive," Simon said as he hauled himself out of the truck and moved around to the back to help Cain unload the cake. Cain threw him a smile and shook his head. "No, really. You could take over my job and I could go fishin'." Simon took the box from Cain and nodded toward the door.
"You're younger. Hop to it and get that door open," Simon said in a fatherly way. Cain narrowed his eyes and nodded to Simon before turning and taking the few steps from the truck to the building.
After delivering the cake, Simon and Cain moved back outside to the truck. Simon tapped Cain's arm and nodded to the edge of the building where two men were fighting with a tree trunk. Both of them could see that the men needed another pair of hands to get the stump out of the hole. Simon waved for Cain to go over while he ran back to the truck for gloves.
Cain got to the men and the stump just before they lost a hold on the large mass of wood and he helped heave the stump toward the grounds staff as Simon arrived with two pairs of gloves. The four of them managed to get the stump away from the hole and the two men on staff thanked Simon and Cain for their help.
"I appreciate the help," one of the men said, shaking Cain's hand, then Simon's. "It's just the two of us here and all the trees on campus decided they wanted to rot." Simon chuckled - the city had been having a problem with all the trees the last few months.
"If you need any help," Cain offered, not sure about the looks on the two men's faces. Simon chuckled and clapped a hand on Cain's shoulder as the man on the left shook his head.
"Thanks for the offer, but the school gets a little touchy with the general public volunteering their time," he said with a laugh. Simon nodded to Cain.
"Maybe we should see if the school is hiring," he said with a laugh. Cain smirked as the man on the left pointed across the street.
"Job Placement’s on the first floor." Simon and Cain looked at each other and Simon shrugged.
