The fourth week of class, the first paper was assigned. Cain was rather glad to have met Josh, because he had no idea what he'd gotten himself into with this class. As everyone was putting their things away, Cain turned to Josh.

"This should be interesting." Josh smiled as he fought with his textbook.

"Been a while since you've written a paper?"

Cain nodded. "The reports I did weren’t much more than filling in the blanks," he sighed, thinking about how tedious the Tin Man reports were, and that was nearly twenty annuals ago.

"Well, I'm headed for the library, if you wanna go," Josh offered. "Unless you have to work?" Cain shook his head and motioned for Josh to lead the way. They left the building and stepped out into the sunlight of a perfect California day - which Josh pointed out - and were halfway across campus when Cain stopped and looked back.

"Isn't the library-" he trailed off, pointing back toward the building they had class in. Josh nodded and hitched a thumb over his shoulder.

"Yeah, but there's a better selection at the Huntington." Cain's eyes went wide as Josh turned and walked away. He turned back to Cain a moment later and yelled: "You comin'?" Cain sighed and double-timed it to catch up.

'This should be good,' he thought with a grunt. As they walked, Josh gave Cain his ideas for topics on the paper - Cain still hadn't decided what to write about, especially since he had no opinion on the topic.

Josh and Cain arrived at the North gate of the Huntington and showed their university IDs to the guard, who waved them through. As they cut across the grounds, Cain kept an eye out for DG. He still hadn’t told her about the class; not that he needed her permission.

When they reached the library door, Cain huffed: he'd forgotten about the woman tending to the library. Maybe she would keep this development to herself. She glanced up to the both of them and smiled.

"You made a friend," she said with a sly grin. Cain forced a smile back and his brow furrowed a moment later as she leaned forward and Josh kissed her cheek.

"Funny, Mom." Cain blinked as his brain tried to register this new fact. Josh turned and frowned slightly at the look on Cain's face then shook his head and moved to introduce them.

"Josh is your son?" Cain asked in a near-statement. Josh frowned again and looked between Cain and his mother.

"You know him?" he asked, pointing to Cain. His mother smiled and Cain nodded.

"We've met." Cain couldn't help but chuckle at the look on Josh's face - he’d seen it on Jeb's more than once - as he answered.

"What brings you here?" Josh’s mom asked, looking back at her son.

"Research for a-" he stopped short as he noticed the look on Cain's face. "-term paper..." he finished slowly. Mom raised her eyebrows and looked at Cain, who didn't budge. She wanted to laugh because she could tell exactly what Cain was thinking by the look on his face.

Cain set his backpack down on one of the tables with a sigh as Josh pulled out the chair opposite Cain. "Hmm..." Mom said with a grin and shrugged. Nodding toward them, she was two steps away when they all heard a loud whisper.

"Josh?" Cain's eyes closed and he cursed under his breath as Josh moved past him and met DG at the end of the counter.

"Hey, Dee," he said as she gave him a quick hug.

"Look at you, college boy," she said, ruffling his hair. He made a face and ducked away as she laughed. "What's goin' on?" she asked, realizing that she knew the back of the head standing just behind Josh. Cain turned just enough to catch DG's eye and sighed.

Josh threw a glance back to Cain and turned back to DG. "Just here to get some- Oof!" Cain had just elbowed him in the side and it took everything DG had not to laugh.

"Nice... backpack," she said with a slight nod to Cain's bag. Crossing her arms, DG smiled and knew that, if he could manage getting away with it, Cain would probably kill her then and there. Cain clenched his jaw and looked away; DG had a damn infectious smile and he would not crack.

Josh glanced between Cain and DG then shot a look to his mother, who was trying extremely hard not to laugh. Looking back to DG, he pointed to Cain. "You know Wyatt?"

DG's eyes moved to Josh. "We've met." Josh's head tilted slightly at the copycat answer and turned back to Cain.

"Is there anyone you don't know?" Cain shook his head and stepped past Josh, as DG was calling him over with her finger. Josh stared in awe as Cain passed and his mother pulled him over. "What-" She shushed Josh and kept an eye on Cain and DG. "Mom?" Josh asked quietly.

"This is better than Days."
