“What the hell are you talking about?” Ryan poured the rest of the pasta into the boiling water and turned to look at him. “What deposit and why do you want to mix porn?”
“Not porn, I meant sperm. I’m making a list of pros and cons. Surrogate versus adoption, how do you milk the sperm for the process if we go with a surrogate-”
“Eric… is this about your biological clock?”
“What?”
“You’re older so… Is that it? I mean you’ve been going on and on about this for a week. Why are you in such a rush?”
“I’m exited! I want a little Adam.”
“You want a little Adam, before we even decide to get a kid?”
“You think I’m going too fast?”
“Just a little bit. And Adam… do you really want the kid to sound like a synonym for the original sin?”
“Well at least we know the original Adam ate his veggies.”
“Apple is a fruit, not a vegetable. Don’t you have any other names?”
“How bout Jonathan?”
“Too East coast.” Ryan pulled the sauce pan off the stove and left it to cool down. “And how do you know we’ll get a boy?”
“Ryan…” A wide grin appeared on Eric’s face. “You’re gonna say yes.”
“What do you mean?”
“Every time we talk about this and you say something like that, you always finish it with “if we decide to do it”. You didn’t say it this time. You want to do it.”
“Eric-”
“Say it. You wanna do it.”
“It’s not about wanting to do it.” Ryan groaned. “Yes, I want to have kids with you, but I’m worried about doing it like this.”
“How?”
“In a hurry. On an impulse. You talked about it a week ago and then you just want to go ahead and do it. There’s a lot of things to consider.”
“I know! I’m not jerking off into a cup yet!”
“Thanks a lot, now I won’t have any appetite when the food’s ready.”
“You said yourself it takes a lot of time, so it’s better to get started.”
“Yeah…” Ryan sighed and stirred the cooking past. “I’ve just started to get used to the idea of having children together. This will take a while. Just ignore me if I start panicking.”
“Shouldn’t that phase come right before the kid is born?” Eric smirked. “You’ll be a great daddy.”
“I’m not sure about that.”
“You think I could take care of a baby by myself? Someone would come and confiscate the kid under an hour.”
“I don’t think “confiscate” is the right word for it-”
“You know what I mean. You got that maternal thing going on.”
“Call me maternal one more time and I’ll leave you alone with a sample cup to think about your sperm counts.”
“So you think I should be the one?”
“Which one?”
“The one to donate!”
“Eric…” Ryan could hold his laugher. “How can you make baby making sound so freaky?”
“It’s a gift. And we’re doing some more planning tomorrow after work.”
“We are?”
“Yeah, I got us an appointment at family planning specialist.”
“I thought those were for pregnant women.”
“That’s different kind of family planning. This one is for couples, who have to use detours. She’ll go through our medical histories, hereditary illnesses and all that stuff.”
“You already made the appointment?”
“You can’t come? We can reschedule-”
“No, I can come. You’re just moving so fast with this.”
“Like you said, I’m older than you, my biological clock is ticking.” Eric laughed. He took a step closer and placed his hands on Ryan’s hips. “And raising a kid with you is the next best thing after actually knocking you up.”
“That’s touching.” Ryan commented, trying to maintain a straight face. “And creepy.”
------------------------------------------------------
“Okay, I’ll tell them. You enjoy your weekend, and I’ll let them know you’ll be there next Monday. Bye.”
Greg hung up and hooked the cell phone to charger.
“Nicky? Are you done?”
“Yeah. You?”
“Yep.”
Nick stepped out of the kitchen and into the living room.
“Who was it?”
“Hawkes, he wants to come back to work early.”
“Shouldn’t he just wait till the doctor says he can work again?”
“He doesn’t exactly dig ditches or cut rocks. He sits behind a desk most of the day. And if I have to listen to him whining about how bored he is one more time… It’s easier to let him come back.”
“I though he was still going to undergo some surgery.”
“He had a change of hearts.”
“Can you have a change of hearts with surgery? Isn’t that dangerous?”
“Did Don tell you what kinda surgery he was planning?”
“No.”
“He was gonna have some kinda operation to remove the scars from his stomach. I guess he finally believed that Don doesn’t give damn about his scars.”
“That’s a nice thought.”
“Yeah…” Greg agreed. “So how was your mom?”
“She’s… lively.”
“She said it again, didn’t she?”
“Yeah.”
“Who asks her son if he’s met a nice girl, when she knows he’s seeing a guy? That woman will not stop until someone gets her to go on antipsychotic meds.”
“Greg-”
“Don’t try to Greg me. When we went to Texas for your sister’s baby’s christening, she tried to kill me!”
“It was an accident! She forgot you’re allergic to coconut.”
“I could have died if I hadn’t noticed it between the chocolate sauce and the ice cream! You lived on that ranch for years, how many times did she use coconut in anything?”
Nick had to think about it for a minute.
“I don’t remember her ever using it…”
“That woman should go on the same medication that you dad’s on. He was always really nice.”
“He hardly even knew what was going on around him.”
“Exactly.”
------------------------------------------------------
“Maybe we should call your sister…”
“Why?”
“We could ask her to be our surrogate, that way the baby would have both of our genes-”
“Eric, you will not impregnate my sister. Besides, she and her hubby are planning to try for one of their own, so she wouldn’t be available anyway.”
“Maybe it’s a sign.”
“What do you mean sign?”
“If I don’t get you in the family way soon, your little sister will get there before us.”
“It’s not a competition.”
“You could be both expecting at the same time. You could call her to compare cravings and morning sickness and swollen ankles-”
“Who says it will be me who gets knocked up? And don’t use that term again, it sounds like pushing someone off a cliff or something…”
“Isn’t it obvious? I’m the free spirited, cool, funky dad, and you’re the warm, clean cooking mama.”
“If you have to call yourself cool and funky, you’re probably not cool or funky.”
“You know what I mean: If you handle your half and I’ll handle mine, and we’ll raise a perfect kid.”
“Yeah..." Ryan sighed and smiled. "I think we`ll be good parents.”
“So you’ll come and give a sperm sample tomorrow?”
“You really know how to ruin a moment…”
“Come on, it’s a big part of the whole thing. You can’t get anywhere without the little swimmers.”
“Shut up.“ Ryan groaned and leaned against Eric. “If your swimmers are as fast as your mouth, you’ll have ten surrogates pregnant before the end of the week.”
