Ryan hung up and took a deep breath.
“It’s done. Ticket’s are booked, they’re expecting us. Nothing can save us from this except death.”

“It’s a wedding, how bad can it be?” Eric stated. “Actually, I don’t wanna know…”
“You’ve never seen a wedding Wolfe style. My mom’s been waiting for this since Karen was a teenager. She updates the guess list annually, she has the menu all prepared, and I’m sure she picked everyone’s clothes for them too.”

“If someone tried that with my sisters they wouldn’t even have time to know what hit them. They’d get shoved head first to a piranha tank.”
“Who has a piranha tank?”
“That was just an example.”
“So you’re trying to tell me your sisters can be potentially homicidal?”
“No! I just meant-”
“I know what you meant.” Ryan smirked. “And I can’t wait to tell them what you said.”
“They’ll take it as a compliment.”
“Probably. Anyway, my sister`s pretty much the same. You should have heard the fights they had when she hit puberty.”

“Dishes flying around?”
“No, that’s the Delko approach, in my family people just throw nasty remarks at each other with a civilised tone and ambivalent expressions.”
“How cultured.” Eric deadpanned and mimed applause. “Is that why you moved away?”
“Partly. I got out as soon as I turned eighteen, Karen was fifteen.”
“That’s weird…”
“No, three years gap. I told you-”
“I mean it’s weird you’ve never actually talked about them before. You know more about my family than any sane man would want to know.”

“Not much to tell, Karen’s the only one I keep in touch with. I wanted to be a writer and I studied it for a while. Then I dropped out.”
“Why?”
“Because I realised I was an awful writer.” Ryan chuckled. “But that was when I met Greg. His career took off and he helped me get into directing.”
“You said partly, what’s the other part?”
“What other part?”
“You said fighting was one part of leaving Boston. What else?”
“I came out.”
“And they didn’t like it.”
“They didn’t.”

“Did they kick you out?”
“No, I meant what I said: I left.” Ryan corrected. “They didn’t like my leanings, but they also didn’t want people talking about them as that couple who kicked out their gay son. Circles in Boston are pretty small, and they value their reputation far too much. People don’t necessarily like some things, but they don’t show it.”

“Did you date much in Boston?”
“Why do you ask?”
“I wanna know how my incredibly sexy husband…” Eric grabbed Ryan’s shoulders and pulled him across the bed till he was laying on top of Eric. “…was still a virgin when he came to L.A.”

“I’ll tell you a secret…” Ryan leaned down to kiss the tip of Eric’s nose. “… it’s possible to have boyfriends… and have fun… and make them wriggle and moan… and pant like a steam engine… without going all the way.”
“It’s not!”
“It is.” Ryan grinned. “I didn’t want to do it with anyone, because I wasn`t totally sure about it.” He breathed against Eric’s neck. “The first time was awful, but we wouldn’t have ended up here without it.”
“Except that it took you years to recover from it.”

“Eric.”
“Sorry.”
“You don’t need to apologise, but I don’t want to talk about it anymore. I’ve told you that. It’s like my first boyfriend: Better forgotten.” Ryan rolled off the bed to grab his ringing phone from the nightstand. “Wolfe. Yeah, wait a sec.” He covered the receiver and threw Eric a confused look. “Karen again.”

He went to the kitchen to take the call. When he returned to the bedroom few minutes later, he looked like someone had just announced the upcoming Armageddon.

“Wedding’s off.”
“Off? You just talked to her this morning.”
“She had another fight with mom. It started from the white doves, and just escalated. Wedding dress, wedding night, seating charts, best man’s toast… She decided to ditch the whole wedding and elope.”
“So what? We eloped too.”
“It get’s worse. She and her fiancé are coming here.”
“Here? Here as in L.A. or here as in this apartment?”

“Here as in L.A. She wants to get wed somewhere she knows mom won`t go to.” Ryan let out a deep sigh. “So she’s coming here.”
“For how long?”
“Just a day. They’ll get married here, just them and a judge, and then they’ll leave for their honeymoon.”

“Great.” Eric smirked. “You get to see her wedding, and you don’t even need to pay for the flight.”
“Not the point.” Ryan run his fingers through his hair and groaned. “She said that she’ll show me hers, if I show her mine.”
“What are we talking about here?”
“Men. She wants to introduce her fiancé to me so I can give him the Big Brother speech.”
“You’ve already met the guy.”
“Last time I met him some mean girl knocked him down to the sandbox face first. And that’s not what I’m worried about. She wants to inspect you, to make sure you`re good enough for her big brother.”

“We were gonna meet them in Boston anyway-”
“Exactly. When there’s a lot of people around everyone behaves, but when there’s just us…”
“You said I would love her when I get to know her!”
“And that was true. But after that call I should probably squeeze you into a backbag and mail you to Switzerland.”

“What can she have against me?” Eric protested. “Anyway, I’ll handle it, I can charm anyone when I put my mind into it.”

“Eric-”
“I once charmed a nun out of her habits. It may have been in a costume party, but it still counts.”
“That’s why I’m worried.” Ryan stated. “She knows all about your old reputation.”
“You told her?”
“No, she googled you when I first told her about us. Now that I think about it, that’s probably why she wanted you to come to Boston… She sent you message.”

“What?”
“She said she’ll give you a chance and wants to get to know you.”
“That’s good.”
“And if you’re anything like the player you used to be, she’ll cut off your balls, soak them in vinegar and leave them on the beach for the birds to eat.”
