Chapter 30 - Interrogation - The Cops Method - part 1

Yunho ran into his father’s room and came back with the stuffed Bambi deer. Everyone looked at him as if he had lost his mind. The cop sat on the sofas and removed the contents of a hidden pocket which included his turned off cell phone.
-Do any of you have one of those untraceable cell phones?
Eric handed him one.
-Ok, I need Jaejoong’s phone number.
The business man read the text Yunho sent him.
-You sent me a phone number? Why?
-That is the number of this disposable phone. You are going to take my cell phone with you and call me from it to this number when you are on the police station.
-What?
-You, Jun Ki and even Changmin there, managed to get enough evidence regarding the demolition and ownership of that building. Then, you also have evidence of how the company was being infiltrated by mafia thanks to those files on your computer that Siwon must have planted. So, regarding all that, you’re ok, right?
-Right. Now, why would I take your phone with me? To be arrested on suspicion of being related to your disappearance?
-No. So we can send them on Siwon’s trail instead. They have probably been investigating Taemin and Ren with you in mind and there is no evidence of your guilt or innocence. I want to convince them to consider that bastard. Having the police investigating him should at least make him nervous enough to commit some mistakes.
-Yes, that would be great. But how? And why take your phone?
-To make it seem like I contacted you to get info on Siwon, which is why you visited the orphanage to ask about Taemin. Also, to give me a chance to talk with Il Woo on the phone. Oh, just sit down for a second, will you? Let me explain.

After a while, everyone was looking at Yunho with newfound respect. Even Changmin, although begrudgingly. It also hadn’t passed unnoticed to the more watchful, like Junsu and Mr Jung, how Yunho had only addressed Jaejoong and how both their attitude towards each other was very polite and almost formal.
Jaejoong took some time to consider Yunho’s plan, mostly because he was surprised by it; while the cop waited anxiously to find what he thought of it. Everyone remained quiet waiting for their boss to have the first word, except Changmin who pointed at Yunho as if he had never seen him before.
-Ok, dude, seriously. Who are you and what have you done with the dumb cop who broke into the house?
-Knock that shit off, Min. - Spat Yunho with an angry voice.
-Min? Hey, Mr. Jung Yunho, you don’t get to address me as Min.
-And you don’t get to insult me either. I am sick and tired of your jokes. I made mistakes but you have done mistakes too. What is your excuse besides incompetence? At least I can claim lack of time to investigate.
Everyone stared at the cop, he seemed furious and about to snap. In his corner of the sofa, Jaejoong recognised this angry man, he had seen him before. “His eyes are almost the same as when I woke up to him above me, punching me. Almost that same blind anger. If Minnie says anything else… “
Yunho pulled his hair, breathed deep in an obvious effort to calm down, and stared hard at the tall bodyguard who was looking at him, utterly surprised.
-I got a missing kid case on Monday with no clues whatsoever, a hell of a mess on Wednesday with a dead guy and my gun missing, my Dad getting hurt, me getting suspended. Then, Siwon tells me a bunch of stuff like he’s taking this huge risk confiding in me. Yes, I believed him. I had no reason not to.
The cop’s voice was getting louder and louder. No one dared to say anything, sensing he was too close to hitting something. Jaejoong just stared at him, trying hard not to wince as the memories of waking up to his punches assaulted his mind. Yunho just continued yelling, oblivious to everyone’s surprise, finally too feed up with their teasing.
-Then the next day I follow you guys talking around with mafia. Come on, you all went to meet TOP. What was I supposed to think? You met him just to talk of the weather? And finally the icing on the cake. Before I can continue to investigate more, there’s a thug blackmailing me. Ah, but he’s also confirming everything I suspected and even saying Jaejoong killed Ren. You think you’re so smart, Changmin. Try this exercise on for size: try putting yourself on my place.
Yunho stormed off the room leaving behind his stunned audience. It was only Yoochun who broke the silence after a few more silent moments.
-Ok, I kind of, sort of, you know… I think that he can actually give Minnie and Jae a good run on who wins the most volatile temper award. I guess now I totally believe those articles about him. And it no longer sounds so surprising why he tried to…
Junsu aimed his elbow into Yoochun stomach before he could continue. The hurting man looked at his boyfriend who just gave him a silent shake of the head to be quiet. They both looked sideways at Jaejoong who was still staring at the spot where Yunho had disappeared.
The business man was lost in his thoughts. “Well, I guess that helps explain why he lost it. And... This is ridiculous but it supports Junsu’s theory that if he allowed sex, it means he really actually allowed it. I don’t get it. He’s stronger than me. The night he attacked me I was only able to fight him off when he got distracted by how scared I got. There’s also the way Yoochun described him fighting with Jun Ki or training the guards. And yet, he initiated sex and even agreed to it a second time. Why? The first time allowed him access to the computer but why a second time? He’s a cop that arrests sex offenders and I raped him. This makes no sense. With a temper like that, why the hell did he let me do whatever I wanted?”
Jaejoong pulled his hair and kept staring into space, unaware that all eyes were on him. “Focus, Kim Jaejoong. You were totally checking him out as he stormed out of here. You had your eyes on his…  Ah, just focus, will you? You can’t keep doing the same mistakes. Nothing tells you he won’t still try to arrest you for what you did to him. And now he’s no longer a prisoner, he’s no longer compelled to let you fuck him. So, stop. Focus. You have much more serious shit to worry about.”

Mr. Jung was worried about his son but he was also secretly glad that he had finally showed his claws. And regarding the teasing from Changmin and Yoochun he knew just what to do to get back at them, and it might also help distract Jaejoong a little. He was biting his tongue not to ask more questions about what had happened between Yunho and Jaejoong, everyone always avoided answering him. The business man, in particular, seemed very off, ever since his son had come clean with everything. It seemed there was something about the first days. He had no doubt they had fallen together into bed a bit against their own wills and judgement, however there seemed to be more about that story and he was sure it must certainly involve Yunho’s temper and Jaejoong’s temper. But he decided to take care of one thing at a time. First the two bodyguards.
-Hey, why don’t you switch bodyguards?
-Huh? What? What do you mean, Mr. Jung? - Asked Jaejoong.
-Let’s make you seem less intimidating. You need Jun Ki to explain the technicalities and they have seen him already. Probably think he’s a harmless secretary. They also met Changmin, who is just a kid and a brat, despite his height.
-Hey! - Yelled Changmin with an offended look making Yoochun laugh.
-Older man talking, boy.
Mr. Jung ignored Changmin, who seemed to be about to boil, and kept talking with Jaejoong.
-If you take Jun Ki and this brat here, it will take an army to get to you but for the cops it will look as if you are unprotected. Now… Add Yoochun there and Yunho’s friends at the police station might actually volunteer to offer you protection.
-What is that supposed to mean? - Now it was Yoochun who looked offended at Mr. Jung, while Changmin laughed.
Jaejoong smiled at Mr. Jung’s suggestion and did exactly as he said, even if it earned him two mumbling complaining bodyguards for the trip to the police station.

At the police station, Il Woo and Kim Soo Hyun were talking with their Captain and the newly returned to work Lee Min Ho, Yunho’s partner.
-Min Ho, I want you to team up with Lee Jong-suk. You will take care of all your previous cases except for the missing kid. And I don’t want you anywhere near the investigation on Yunho. This is quite the big mess. I don’t need any more stuff for Jang Geun Suk and his partner Yoon Sang Oska to pick up on, you hear me?
-Yes, Captain. Don’t worry.
The Captain stared hard at his officer, seemingly not very convinced of his complete obedience.
-Captain, seriously. You don’t have to worry. We believe Yunho is innocent and we won’t do anything to give Geun Suk more ammunition.
The Captain nodded and left his officers to do their work. As soon as the Captain was out of sight, Lee Min Ho started to question his colleagues on the investigation.
-Well, what the hell is going on? What have you got so far?
Kim Soo Hyun started laughing at his eager friend.
-The shot you received affected your ears? The Cap just told you to stay out. Careful, he’s been in a bad mood. It’s been pouring around here.
Min Ho ignored Soo Hyun’s teasing and changed his focus to Il Woo, who led them into an interrogation room.
-Cap Rain isn’t joking when he says this is a big mess. And it seems to get bigger the more we dig. What is it that you and Yunho had so far on the dead creep and the missing kid?
-Huh? Why? Those two cases are not related, Il Woo. Let’s see. That lawyer reported the kid missing, however the orphanage director seemed to think the boy would soon show up. Before we could investigate more, we got a lead on the creep and ended up on that damn chase. I saw Yunho and the guy enter the building, only Yunho got out, no one else. But Yunho would never shoot him dead. Punch him all the way into a nice holiday in the hospital? Sure. Fire in self-defence? Yes. Shoot to kill? Never. He’s too much of a goody type of guy. I’ve seen him put himself as a defence shield in front of bad guys before, just to make sure they would end up in jail.
-Yep, that’s Yunho. - Said Soo Hyun with a smile.
-Well, Yunho seemed to keep on investigating both cases even after Rain suspended him. He went back to the orphanage to ask the director about Kim Jaejoong and an older kid named Ren. Do you know who Jaejoong is?
-Yes. Shin Hye-sung and Jun Jin always complain how they keep having to go there when there is never anything to find out. But I doubt Yunho ever even heard the guy’s name. When we get together to drink and Yunho is with us, it’s always on those occasions where he just wants to forget the world.
-Ah, I know what you mean. One of those days when we all think Yunho is in the wrong profession. Well, that is also pretty much what they told us. Anonymous tips keep arriving saying how Jaejoong’s company is involved with the mafia; after all most of his clients are mafia or mafia related, but then they always find the best squeaky clean accounts books of all the companies they ever investigated. Anyway, Yunho also discovered the building had been demolished, which it should never have happened since it was a crime scene investigation. And, get this, by Kim Jaejoong’s company. Also, Kim Jaejoong used to date the lawyer Choi Siwon. Even better, Jaejoong was friends with Ren and Ren was friends with Taemin, who Siwon reported missing.
-What? You mean the two cases are somehow related? That is just way too many coincidences. - Min Ho stared wide eyed at what Il Woo told him.
-The cases are definitely related. Yunho did his investigation on Friday. Then he gave Park Jung Min some story that convinced the poor guy to go happily on his weekend trip but apparently he and his Dad disappeared sometime during Saturday or Sunday. We have no idea if Yunho and his father are together or not, if they are ok or not. - Added Soo Hyun in a defeated and worried tone.
-What else have you two found out?
-Siwon made it seem like he is convinced Jaejoong is mafia and he was also the one who first informed us that Jaejoong was involved with the orphanage. - Said Il Woo.
-However, we found out that not only the mafia accusations run a little thin but also that the demolition was probably a set up. - Soo Hyun complemented.
Min Hoo looked at Il Woo and at Soo Hyun a little confused.
-How?
Soo Hyun happily explained.
-Jaejoong’s men were extremely surprised to find the company involved in the demolition. They went to investigate it themselves. That got me wondering and I decided to dig a little deeper. The actual company who did the demolition and the owner of the building relates back to… You’ll love this: Siwon.
-The lawyer? That uptight dude? That makes no sense. What about this other kid?
Il Woo stretched his back and continued to fill in Lee Min Ho on their findings.
-Teamin and Ren are both kids from the orphanage. Jaejoong is a long time sponsor and Siwon became one when he was involved with him. Jaejoong and Ren were known friends. The kid is now adopted and living in the States but remains in contact with Jaejoong. Now, this starts to get more interesting when we went to get the hospital files on Ren. He was attacked some months back. The kid was drugged, beaten and most likely raped. He got into a coma and woke up with no memory of the last days. Jaejoong apparently got everyone repeating some story of how the kid had simply been robbed. Even his adoptive mom believes that story. This was also around the time Siwon and Jaejoong broke up. Remember how I said it got more interesting? Guess where it said the kid was found?
-No way? You mean?
-Yep, the same building to where you and Yunho chased that sex offender. Everything keeps getting back to the same people and the same places.
-So, who raped Ren? Jaejoong? Siwon? Someone else? Why didn’t Jaejoong report a rape? That is beyond suspicious. And what is it that this other kid has to do with all this?
-Siwon reported him missing some time ago. This Monday, before we even knew Yunho was missing, Jaejoong himself went to the orphanage to ask about Taemin.
Min Ho had his mouth comically opened in disbelief.
-How are you two going to figure out who you should chase? It’s a loop.
Il Woo stretched again, eyes on the ceiling. Soo Hyun shrugged his shoulder before replying.
-Siwon is a bit of a dead end, unless we have more specific things to ask him. Let’s not forget he is a top shot lawyer. Jaejoong is also involved in everything and is the one with an army of bodyguards and rumours of mafia assassination attempts. It is rather easier to suspect him more. But what tips the scales is that maybe the mafia connections are not exaggerated after all.
Min Ho slid to the edge of his seat as Soo Hyun continued.
-Shin Hye-sung and Jun Jin analysed the mountains of papers and computer files we brought back from Jaejoong’s company. They just told us a little while ago that there appear to be traces of money laundering. And when we talked with TOP and some of his dogs, they were very secretive about Jaejoong. As for the missing kid, once again, it is only Jaejoong who seemed to have any contact with the boy. Furthermore, and more importantly, it was Jaejoong who Yunho was investigating when he disappeared.
With that last sentence, Soo Hyun also sat back on his chair in much the same position as Il Woo, while Min Ho tried to make sense of everything he had just been told.
-Do you guys think this Jaejoong guy may have something to do with Yunho and his Dad disappearing?
-It’s a possibility, Min Ho. The men spotted at their apartment fit with Jaejoong’s bodyguard’s description. - Said Il Woo with a calm finality.
-Shit!

Changmin parked the car and they all walked to the police station. Jaejoong was a bit nervous and upset for being late. Within view of the entrance Yoochun suddenly stopped and Jaejoong bumped into him.
-Ouch! Yoochun, what the hell?
The guard said nothing and the business man tried to understand what had caught his attention. Jun Ki and Changmin were also wearing equally puzzled looks. Then Jaejoong comprehended at what he was staring at and started laughing.
-Chunnie, you better get a grip or I am telling on you.
-Jae, are you seeing what I’m seeing? How the hell is there a fireman station in front of a police station? And where are all the ugly men? Do both captains have the same fetish as you for only hiring pretty men?
Annoyed at Yoochun’s words, Jaejoong simply wacked his fist down the guard’s head and kept walking, forcing the three men to follow him. Almost reaching the door, Changmin approached his boss and informed him that Yunho was already on standby.
Inside, they were immediately led to where Il Woo and Soo Hyun were waiting for them. Jaejoong exchanged uneasy looks with Changmin as soon as he realised they were standing outside interrogation rooms like the ones you would see on a tv show.
-Mr. Kim Jaejoong, nice to meet you. I am happy you accepted our invitation. - Said Soo Hyun with a pleasant smile, while Il Woo studied the men in front of him.
-My name is Kim Soo Hyun and this is my partner Jung Il Woo. Please, come inside. Anything we can get you guys to drink?
-No.
They entered the room, freezing for a second at a suspicious mirror wall on one end, and sat all on one side of the table, keeping Jaejoong between Jun Ki and Changmin and Yoochun at Changmin’s side. The two cops leaned against the opposite wall.
-Mr. Lee Jun Ki and Shin Changmin, so good to see you again. And you are?
-Park Yoochun, a pleasure.
-And you work as…?
-Security.
-Oh.
Soo Hyun blinked at Yoochun’s words. The cop could believe Changmin as a bodyguard but this other guy didn’t seem to fit the bill. A few tense moments followed. Only Soo Hyun and Yoochun managed to show genuine looking smiles. Everyone else wasn’t bothering to pretend. Jaejoong tried to ascertain if Il Woo had already judged and condemned him even before talking with him. Yunho had said these two guys would give him a chance but he wasn’t feeling confident. He was much more used to being judged without ever having the hypothesis to defend himself. Sort of like what Yunho had also done.

On the other side of the suspicious mirror the size of a wall, in a smaller room with cameras recording, there were four men. Shin Hye-sung and Jun Jin, Lee Min Ho and his new partner Lee Jong-suk. There was a knock on the door and the Captain himself entered. He lifted an eyebrow at seeing Min Ho inside, who had the decency to look away at being caught.
-I think I told you to stay away?
-Sorry, Cap. I’m too worried about Yunho. I just want to listen. That’s ok, right?
-And it’s Captain.
-Yes, Captain. Sorry.
The Captain looked at the men inside the other room and turned to question Hye-sung.
-You found evidence of money laundering? Why now? You had never found anything before.
-We gave Il Woo all those details. Let’s see what Lee Jun Ki has to say.
-Jun Ki?
-The older one with the cat eyes. He’s Kim Jaejoong’s right hand in the company.
Lee Min Ho decided to risk asking a question.
-Why are they interrogating them all at the same time?
-Because they prefer to make the target comfortable. Besides Soo Hyun likes to watch the reactions from bodyguards and other minions. Very often they will gave away that their boss is lying since they think no one is paying them any attention. - Answered the Captain.
-Oh. Smart.

Il Woo sat facing Jaejoong and placed several folders in front of the business man. With no fake attempt at being nice, he immediately started his questioning with the money laundering. Jaejoong took a deep breath, held a hand to prevent Jun Ki from answering on his behalf, grabbed the files his Assistant had and proceeded to prove his innocence. His eyes were showing how angry he felt but his voice remained controlled since he knew he could defend himself.
On and on the questions went, making Jaejoong curse for the umpteenth time the fact that in his type of business most of his clients were mafia related. He was surprised to find that the cops already knew the demolished building actually belonged to Siwon; that gave him a little bit of hope that maybe Yunho’s plan might work.
When Il Woo exhausted all the questions about illegalities he went in for the kill regarding the boys.
-Did you rape Ren?
