Chapter 28 - More Changes
Lee Jun Ki studied the defeated cop. Suddenly, out of nowhere, and even before Changmin could grab Yunho, Jun Ki aimed a kick at the cop.
…
Taken by surprise, the cop was not able to avoid the strong blow. However, Yunho immediately got up and prepared for Jun Ki’s next attack. For a while the two men, much to the two bodyguard’s amazement, fought around the room. It was a display of martial arts, full of punches and high kicks that did some damage to a few decoration items. Yoochun and Changmin knew that Jun Ki was as good as them but it was a surprise to finally see the cop show his skills. Yunho had never had a chance to defend himself before and it was impressive.
For every blow that Jun Ki made, Yunho was very often able to deflect it and strike back, forcing Jun Ki to defend himself before he could attempt another attack. Both men showed some bleeding from the strong blows.
Just as suddenly as he had started attacking, Jun Ki stopped and bowed to Yunho as if they had been simply training as good friends. Yunho froze and stared confused at the Assistant.
-What the hell was that for?
-You offered to help train Jaejoong’s bodyguards. I figured it was maybe a good idea to check if you can really do it.
Yunho was open mouthed. Behind the two men, Yoochun and Changmin had very different reactions to the surprising statement.
-What the fuck? No way! Who says we need his fucking help? - Changmin asked with a growl.
-Cool, Jun Ki. You rock! - Said Yoochun while he laughed and applauded.
It took some convincing from Yoochun and Jun Ki. The Assistant even had to be extra persuasive with the angry young man, however, in the end, Changmin grudgingly agreed.
…
Slightly confused, Yunho found himself being led to the sofa, next to his father, instead of to his room, as Jaejoong had ordered. The cop looked at his father and gestured that the truth was out, causing the old man to smile proudly at his son.
-I’m going to go check on Jae. - Said Yoochun.
-Will he be ok? - Asked Changmin with a worried voice.
-You know very well that he isn’t ok. Jae still hasn’t recovered from finding Ren like that. And after hearing about a video and in his own computer, plus the suspicions our favourite cop here had, planted by Siwom himself…
Yoochun allowed the end of his sentence to hang in the air. Changmin turned to look at Yunho with a murderous stare but Jun Ki coughed and he just sat at another sofa. Yoochun left the room, smiling at how easily Jun Ki could distract his eternally angry friend. With another exasperated look in Yunho’s direction, Changmin started to talk with the calm Assistant.
-Ok, Jun Ki. What do you suggest?
-We have a great gym here. None of us ever had the time to give the remaining guards additional training. If he’s offering, why not? Besides, you do have to agree he is good.
-Fine, Mr. Aloof Jun Ki.
The Assistant allowed a small smile to escape; it illuminated his features and caused Changmin to blush slightly, much to his annoyance. The tall bodyguard ignored Yunho and in search of another target for his frustration and anger, looked at the old man.
-Hey, husband, where are my roses? Have you forgotten your beloved wife?
-Sorry, wifey. I don’t think you deserve roses.
Changmin stared at the old man.
-Yes, young man. I am not Mr. Thumper. My name is Jung Ji Hoo, Yunho’s father. And you, can call me Mr. Jung.
-What?
-Kindly respect your elders, young boy.
-Boy? What the hell? Look here. - He said as he got up.
-Min.
Changmin stopped, surprised at the use of his nickname in Jun Ki’s voice. He sat down again, then unable to keep still, got up and left the room.
Yunho’s father looked at the calm man in a suit and smiled at him.
-I like you, Mr. Lee Jun Ki. However, I must say you have very poor taste in men. That irascible young man isn’t exactly boyfriend material.
The Assistant laughed openly at the old man.
-Oh, he’s not so bad, He sort of grows on you.
-Bah, I think he only grew in height.
Yunho stared at his father and at the enigmatic Assistant. He wanted to scream and hit his head on a wall. He had no idea what had just happened and what were these two talking about and was left with nothing to do but stare at them with a lost pout.
…
Yoochun opened the door to Jaejoong’s bedroom and peaked inside.
Softly closing the door, he walked to the two men on the bed and joined then, hugging them both. The business man didn’t even react to the additional hug, he just kept sobbing and hiccupping into Junsu’s arms. Eventually the crying man fell asleep, emotionally exhausted. Very carefully so as to not wake him up, his two bodyguards got up and went to talk in whispers at the far end of the room.
-Is there a video like Yunho said?
-Yes, I found it. It was hidden among the stuff Jae never checks, disguised as a software file. We can never allow him to see that video. Jae never forgave himself that he was the one who brought Siwon into Ren’s life.
-Why is he like that?
-He’s traumatized. Ren has no memory of what happened but Jae has the fear of that day carved into his memory and it was Jae who found him first. Another reason why he should never see the video. I also think there might be more to it, however I never was able to get him to talk to me about his confrontation with Siwon.
-Something else must have happened as well. Even with all the problems with the mafia, Jae has always been strong. He pretty much shook off the first assassination attempt, hired us and just kept going with his life. But seeing him like that… He’s broken.
-Yes, it’s like he gets panic attacks. I suspect he had something similar the night Yunho attacked him.
-Do you know what is happening between those two? Do you think we can trust Yunho?
-I hope so. As for what’s happening with those two, I think even they have no idea.
…
Lunch was a strange event. Changmin ate very little, which made everyone weary to even meet his eyes. Yunho was in a daze, too lost in his head, still trying to make sense of everything he has just found out. Only Yunho’s father was in a good mood, obviously happy to leave the pretence and finally being able to talk with the bodyguards and ask questions. Junsu, Yoochun and Jun Ki were the ones who answered his questions and they seemed to have become fast friends at the end of the meal.
Eric and Donghae joined them later in the living room and handed Junsu a computer. Everyone watched with curiosity as Eric connected cables and Junsu opened the files from a pen. Soon, the images from the small laptop screen were visible in the big tv.
-Jun Ki, you’re the expert. Is this what I think it is? - Asked Junsu.
The Assistant started to search and analyse the files.
-Yes. This is some of what I already found the accountant was doing. But it gets worse. This is deeper. I’m starting to suspect that Siwon was planting evidence that Jaejoong was involved directly with the mafia. See that? It is money laundering, but nothing too big or we would have noticed it before. The company would be perfect for it; it is a successful company that normally moves around huge amounts of money.
-But the guys I have keeping an eye on Siwon never saw him anywhere near anything mafia related.
-Can we be sure? He is a lawyer, he meets all sorts of different people.
While Junsu and Jun Ki talked, Changmin looked at Yunho and noticed he had an unmistakably very surprised face.
-Seriously? I mean, like, seriously? Hey, guys, the dumb cop here also thought Jae is mafia. Dude! Y-O-U are supposed to help us? You’re as dumb as a door.
Yoochun chuckled at Yunho’s mortified look, then he asked Eric to disconnect the cables and prepared to just watch some tv, even asking Yunho’s father what to choose. Jun Ki kept analysing the files on the laptop. The phone rang, Eric answered it.
-The guards stationed at their apartment just reported that the landlord returned and some cops showed up there as well. There is a circus going around the entire place of people investigating their disappearance. Apparently there are even guys from the police Internal Affairs.
Junsu looked at Yunho waiting for his explanation.
-You all heard what I told Jaejoong. When I went inside that building, someone hit me and killed the creep. But since my gun went missing, the guy from Internal Affairs who hates my guts is just trying to have me arrested for murder. I’m still furious that I could not tell that that damn building had hidden cameras and hidden rooms.
-You sure you didn’t kill the guy yourself? - Sneered Changmin.
-I’ll make Yoochun’s earlier words my own. You must have a very funny idea of who I am.
-Oh, it’s funny alright.
Changmin laughed and made Yoochun laugh as well, while both Yunho and his father looked upset at the young man’s words.
-Go on. What does all this mean now? - Said Junsu with a thoughtful look.
-The guy from Sunday night wasn’t only out to kill your boss. He also came to kill me if possible. I guess Siwon must not want anyone knowing what he told me. I’m also pretty sure that by the end of today there will be an arrest order issued on my name. Rain won’t be able to help it. And if footage from the hidden cameras is released I will be really fucked up, cause I’ve seen it, it makes it look like I was the one who murdered the guy. Putting all that together and with my Dad in this condition, I guess at this point I volunteer to be your guest.
-Volunteer, huh? That really is something. Sounds to me like you want to use us poor incompetent bodyguards for your own protection.
-Yes, Changmin, I admit. I will need to stay here under your protection. However, don’t dismiss me that easily. I may have made a lot of mistakes but I can do my job.
-Can you contact anyone on the police? Who is this Rain you talked about? - Junsu asked.
-Rain is the Captain’s nickname. I’m sure he and some of my colleagues believe I am innocent. However, it will be best not to contact them. The guy who blackmailed me Friday knew too many things about me. He even knew that Geun Suk from Internal Affairs hates me cause I dated the guy he likes. I don’t think I was led to that building on purpose but just two days later some thug already knew too much about me. There must be some leak.
-Oh, there is. I read the internet articles about you. There was too much information that should never be released. If the guy who talks to the reporters also talked to that thug, it is indeed possible any contact you make with your friends in the police will not remain secret.
There was a moment of silence. Then it was Yunho’s father who broke it.
-Well, son. Don’t just stand there with your face in your hands. What now?
-Yeahh, come on. Amaze us. After all, you’re the guy who kept finding the blind spots in our security. You must have some brain cells in there. I’m pretty sure some must have escaped Min’s punches. - Added Yoochun with a slightly mocking tone.
Yunho remained silent for a few moments, reviewing everything in his head. Then he noticed a piece that didn’t make much sense.
-The guy who was killed in the building. Why did he went there? Why kill him when I was about to arrest him? You just said that that place is where Siwon attacked Ren and that it belongs to Siwon. How would some small time sex offender know how to go there?
Changmin looked at Yunho in silence, then he nodded and smiled at Jun Ki who smiled back.
-Ok, Yunho. I guess you can earn your keep after all. I will send someone to find information on that dead guy and see how he can relate to any of this. Now, since Jun Ki already proved you are more than capable of fighting, how about we start you on that offer to train our guards? We will need to upgrade the surveillance on Siwon and employ all possible efforts in finding Taemin before Jaejoong has all of our heads. I could use better trained guards.
Everyone seemed more than happy with Changmin’s words. At that, Junsu got up to go check on Jaejoong but Yunho followed him to the stairs.
-Junsu, wait. How is Jaejoong?
-Why are you asking?
-When I attacked him Friday he gave me a run for my money. He’s not as good a fighter as Jun Ki and Changmin but he has a lot of fighting spirit to make up for it. And Sunday with the armed guy, even if he was surprised and scared he reacted. However, when he realised that I was trying to… well, to …
-To rape him. Yes, what about it?
-Look, I know that wasn’t right. I can’t say I would have realised it in time or if I would have stopped. I know he didn’t stop. I tried to rape a guy I thought was a rapist. He raped the guy he thought was a rapist. Congratulations, we were both wrong.
Junsu looked at Yunho’s face. The cop was exuding a rather strong mental control on his emotions. He was sure that the cop was already starting to overcome the rape and move on. Junsu hoped Jaejoong would soon display the same type of mental strength to all situations again.
-As I was trying to say, he had some sort of panic attack, it was like his mind had left his body or he was too scared to fight. And just now, in the library he sort of looked like that again. That is beyond weird. I may only know that man for a few days, but even I now that that has nothing to do with his personality. He can be as angry at the world and at everyone as Changmin is; he’s also smart, extremely demanding and somewhat violent. That is his normal self. Unless he’s talking to Ren or my Dad, then he’s a smiling surprise of sweetness. So, who was that broken empty shell I saw?
-He blames himself for what happened to Ren. You are a cop dealing with these types of crimes. I guess you should be able to understand that.
Yunho looked at the floor.
-Yahh, I guess I get it. I drunk way too many nights to try and forget people I couldn’t help.
Yunho looked back at Junsu with a hard to read expression. Junsu guessed maybe even Yunho didn’t know how he felt at the moment.
-Will he be ok?
-Yes, he will.
-Hey, cop boy! Stop flirting with my boyfriend. Let’s hit the gym. I wanna see you kick Changmin’s butt. - Yelled Yoochun from the living room.
Junsu nodded at Yunho and went up the stairs while the cop sighed and prepared for a hard afternoon.
…
Later in the day, it was Junsu who answered the call from Ren’s mother, who was calling after being contacted by the police. He was forced to plead with the woman to keep the ugly truth from Ren about how Taemin was missing, or at least make it sound less serious. When he hang up, he was concerned with the cops’s progress. Looking at Jaejoong’s restless sleeping figure, he was sure his boss would not make a convincing view if the cops questioned him about Ren and Taemin. Just like Yunho had first blamed Jaejoong, Junsu worried the current cops investigating would do the same.
…
Jaejoong woke up with a headache. Immediately Junsu was at his side with a painkiller and a glass of water.
-Where is everybody?
-They are all at the gym except the guards on duty.
-The gym? Why? What’s going on?
-Our guests can’t really leave our house. Not if we don’t want to be responsible for their deaths or at least Yunho’s arrest for a murder I believe he didn’t commit. So, he’s helping us train our guards. Not just with fighting skills, he’s also going over everything with Chunnie, Min and Jun Ki. The guy is actually smart enough that even Min has stopped complaining and grumbling at every second and has actually started to show his mature professional side. You should see how Jun Ki is surreptitiously looking at Minnie. Our snarky brat might actually have to thank Yunho for that.
-Great. So, we are all happy friends now?
-Circumstances call for it.
Jaejoong sighed at that. His eyes caught sight of the wall mirror and he pulled his own hair.
-What is it, Jae?
-I raped him. Su, I really raped him. It’s getting impossible to ignore that, now that I am no longer too busy being angry with him and the world. I raped him. Oh, God! I’m as bad as Siwon! And I’m not so sure anymore that it really was consensual sex what happened last night and the night before. Come on, he is the prisoner of a man that he believed was a rapist and that actually raped him on sight. Not to mention how Min beat him to get info out of him. Consensual sex my ass.
-I just talked with him. Most of all, he is very strong emotionally. I don’t think you could have had sex with him the way you two apparently had the last two nights, if he really didn’t want to. You had a hard time fighting against him and you even had to tie him down the first time, right? And if I remember correctly what you told me, he was the one who initiated Sunday night. Probably as a way to get access to the computer, but still. As for last night, I saw your exchange in the corridor from the security cameras. You totally asked for permission and he gave it.
-Whatever, Junsu. How does that make me any better as a man than Siwon?
-Jae, please. Don’t go there. We are also at fault here. We suspected what you would do and didn’t stop you.
-This is too fucked up. Just think about it. The cop sent after me is the one who warns me that Siwon has planted incriminating evidence in my computer. Imagine being arrested and having to explain that video when the company was implicated in demolishing that damn building. And now Yunho is helping us catch Siwon and find Taemin? Crazy. Utterly fucked up.
-Life is fucked up. We either give up or live it. Come on, we need to get you ready. The cops investigating the mess Yunho’s disappearance created have found out about Ren. If they were already wanting to talk with you about the demolition of that damn building, now there is no way you will escape having to go to the police and give a statement. I’m expecting them to call at any moment. Add that to all the suspicion of mafia activity and we really need to hurry and gather evidence of your innocence.
-Shit fuck!
-Oh, yeahh. It just keeps getting better, doesn’t it?
