Chapter 29 - Different Mornings
Wednesday morning started a new routine in Kim Jaejoong’s house and in his company. All the guards that could be dispensed from duty spent some time under Yunho’s guidance. Kim Jaejoong and his Assistant, Lee Jun Ki, returned in force to the company to verify all the books and to find where the crumb trail could lead them to. Junsu, Yoochun and Changmin had to lead in person the surveillance on Siwon, the search for Taemin and the thug who had escaped them and, now, also the investigation on the dead sex offender, in order to free more guards for extra training.
It was a tired Yunho who joined his father for lunch.
-Ah! Here you are, son. - He pouted. -I thought I would have lunch all alone. You look tired.
-I am tired. My body is still not in good condition to be training this hard. Plus, going over all the information they have on the mafia attacks and on that Siwon bastard took too long. I slept very little.
-Well, at breakfast you didn’t miss much. Not only Jaejoong had dinner sent to his room last night but also his breakfast today. I think he might be avoiding you. Oh, heard you got yourself a new room, just for you, complete with all the comfort and amenities.
Yunho looked at his father but was too tired to react and say anything. Soon, Donghae came to inform Yunho that other guards were waiting for him.
-What are you guys doing, anyway? Can I watch?
-Sure, Mr. Jung. I can take you. You will like this one, it’s much better than just training martial arts in the gym. We are going to practice driving.
-Driving?
-Yes, Dad. One isn’t born with the ability to chase or escape someone in traffic. A lot of their surveillances have failed cause of that. Changmin is great and gave me a hard time following him. Junsu is pretty good too. But most of the guards keep losing sight of Siwon in the traffic. So, we are going downtown and they will have to chase me and escape me.
-Is it safe for you to do that? They issued an arrest order for you.
-That’s where the fun is, Mr. Jung. Yunho says we have to do it respecting all the traffic rules. And you should have seen Junsu and Changmin’s faces when Yunho told them how he had followed them before. I thought Yoochun would laugh out one of his lungs at their expense.
-What? I really need to see this.
…
At the end of the day, everyone arrived exhausted. Donghae, Yunho and his father were already almost collapsed on the sofas when Junsu, Yoochun and Changmin arrived with frustrated looking faces.
-Any luck? - Asked Yunho.
-Nope. But that dead creep does seems to be a good lead. We double checked your previous investigation of the guy and he hang out a lot around some clubs owned by mafia. I think we might be able to shake that tree for something. - Answered Yoochun.
The last ones to arrive were Jaejoong, Jun Ki and Eric. The bodyguard signalled Donghae and they went to exchange shifts with other guards. Jun Ki sat down next to Changmin, immediately starting to give an account of their progress.
-We’ve done it. It took searching a lot of paper, going over an infinite amount of small figures, but we managed to trace, at least, two money laundering transactions. One to companies owned by Siwon and the other to some mafia guys like ParK Ri Ho. Best thing is, now we can prove we have nothing to do with that.
There was a collective sigh of relief.
-Have the cops called? - Inquired Junsu with a worried voice.
-No. Not a word.
-That’s strange.
Jaejoong stood with his arms crossed and a calm closed expression, silently observing. He studied everyone’s tired faces and didn’t even avoid Yunho’s questioning eyes in his direction. The cop actually relaxed a bit at that, this cold controlled side of the business man was more familiar.
At the dining table the sitting arrangements followed the similar arrangement from Monday morning. Jaejoong sat at the head of the table; at his right, Mr. Jung, Junsu and Yoochun; at his left, Yunho, Jun Ki and Changmin. Everyone was extremely aware of the tension between Jaejoong and Yunho and, yet, they seemed to be conspiring together to seat them next to each other.
Both men were painfully conscious of how everyone at the table was watching their every reaction. Even so, without a single word exchanged between them, they simply ignored each other out of mutual accord. Both joined, now and again, on the discussion of the ongoing training; and investigations; and on what the cops could have; and what conclusions they would be likely to come to. However, they never looked at each other if unnecessary and didn’t exchange a single word.
After a while, Jaejoong started to show his temper, no longer able to keep it under control as they discussed how they had nothing on Siwon. The business man was impatient to get results and, at one point, only Mr. Jung’s soft words were the only thing preventing him from punching the table. To his utter amazement, Yunho found himself affected by that display of fury. Affected in a very specific way. He cursed his betraying body and tried to ignore his almost automatic reaction to an angry Jaejoong.
It was Yunho’s fidgeting at the table that made the business man finally look at him. Really look at him.
The cop felt his breathing stop for a moment. Jaejoong looked at him intensely and Yunho could not divert his own eyes. The business man’s eyes trailed down Yunho’s face slowly, taking in the shaved look, the way the bruises had faded a little more and yet there were also new ones, and stopped unmistakably focused on the lips.
Yunho swallowed hard. He felt hypnotised and his own eyes fell on Jaejoong’s lips who was even biting the bottom lip and then licked it. That snapped the cop to look away. He heard the man next to him release a loud breath. In turns, they both looked at each other when the other had his eyes away.
The tall man forced his attention away from the beautiful angry one next to him and tried to follow the conversation at the table. He breathed in relief that no one seemed to have been aware of what had just happened. It confused him to be affected by Jaejoong. Yunho was getting tired of being physically attracted to the man and was determined to win over it. “He has no hold on me. We are equals now. I don’t want him looking at me like that. I don’t. I… Shit!”
Jaejoong was fighting an inner battle and losing it. He wished he could grab Yunho away from the table and disappear into his room. He was feeling very much like he had felt Monday night before he had followed Yunho and Donghae and ended up taking the chained man to his bed. The slim man searched for the bite marks on the tall man’s neck and smiled in triumph when he was finally able to spot them even with the high neck. That made him feel better somehow. Then, he remembered how, that same night, Yunho had turned away from him, after they had sex, and he closed his eyes against the bitter feeling that invaded him. Guilt rose up and washed all over him, threatening to drown him. “I don’t think he recoiled from me cause of the rough sex. He recoiled cause it was me, the guy who raped him.”
The business man tried to search Yunho’s eyes again, in desperate need of answers, but the cop stubbornly kept his attention elsewhere. Jaejoong was at a loss to understand the man sitting so close to him. This man had saved his life, twice, when he had, at that point, all the reasons to wish him dead. This man had allowed him deep inside his body even after he had taken him by force. This man, who had suffered at his hands, and at his orders, and yet had touched him and fucked him in the gentlest way he had ever experienced. The beautiful man sighed, confused and frustrated. The confident proud cop, practically leading his bodyguards in such a matter of fact way, had little to do with the almost broken and desperate man he had seen before. Jaejoong realised he felt envious of how Yunho had bounced back from everything, it spoke volumes of how emotionally strong the tall man was.
A sad smile came across Jaejoong’s face when he remembered the sleepy Yunho who would say the most absurd things. He rather missed that sleepy Yunho who never seemed to hate him and just spoke of how he wanted to kiss him. The one who slept hugging him in a possessive manner. He sighed and tried to get his attention back on the conversation at the table. There was little chance he would get to see a sleepy Yunho ever again. He also thought he didn’t deserve it, if he was to be honest with himself.
…
When the meal was over it was decided that Jun Ki would stay with them again. Changmin was adamant about not allowing the Assistant to return alone to his own apartment, so Jun Ki gave in to the stubborn young man instead of arguing. Yoochun gave a knowing smile in their direction before embracing Junsu.
It was Jaejoong who moved first to help Mr. Jung to his room, causing Yunho to stay back. However, the cop decided to follow them, it was his own father after all. He was determined not to feel intimidated by the owner of the house, especially now that he was basically staying of his own free choice.
If Jaejoong was surprised to have Yunho helping him attend to Mr. Jung, he showed none of it. It was starting to become clear to him that, like Junsu had implied, he didn’t fear him much. Not anymore. Jaejoong didn’t exactly knew how he felt about that. Thanks to Mr. Jung’s attempts at lightening the mood with his jokes, the two men cooperated easily and soon they left the old man resting peacefully after a tiring afternoon.
It was only as they were walking down the corridor leading to the bedrooms that they realised how they had been in a comfortable silence. Together and alone; everyone else seemed to have disappeared. Immediately, the tension returned to Yunho’s shoulders and he also saw how Jaejoong in front of him had altered the pace of his footsteps. The tall man swallowed hard as he walked by the door of the room where he had woke up Saturday. Jaejoong’s heart race quickened as he kept hearing Yunho’s steps behind him. He had no idea why the man had kept walking.
The cop decided that walking behind Jaejoong, watching how the slim hips swayed, was not the best way to give him some much needed rest, or to stop his mind from going to certain thoughts. He strolled past the smaller man, going faster to his new room on purpose. Walking down this very corridor with him was a memory too recent for comfort. It was only now that he was actually realising how closer to Jaejoong’s bedroom he was, having been too tired the night before to notice it. He opened the door, mumbled a “good night” and closed it behind him, even locking it, as if he was being chased by wild animals. Head against the door, Yunho humourlessly chuckled at the thought that Jaejoong was rather a wild animal, indeed.
The business man stared blinkingly at the closed bedroom door. “Of course, he’s no longer a prisoner. He really truly is a guest now. Entitled to a proper room, instead of that half-finished thing with no windows and shower. I wonder which of my pretty boys remembered to upgrade his room. And… He’s also no longer wearing my clothes. Those seemed to fit him better. Minnie’s probably?”
Jaejoong banged the door to his room, suddenly angry again, and unsure why.
…
Thursday came and went much the same way. At dinner, both Junsu and Yunho kept trying to understand why Jaejoong had not yet been called to testify.
-Those two guys, Il Woo and the smiling one, are they any good? - Asked Yoochun.
-They are probably better than Yunho here. - Replied Jun Ki in an emotionless tone.
Yunho looked menacingly at Yoochun, who bristled at being singled out, since he had only made a simple question.
-They thought to call Ren’s mom and made a few interesting questions. We also now they have dug up Ren’s files from the hospital before we could reach it first. It may not say on the file what exactly happened to him but the injuries will be too telling. They have also been seen talking with Siwon, even Park Ri Ho. The longer they take to call Jae to testify, the more I fear they must be building a case against him. - Worried Junsu.
-Maybe we should risk contacting them. I trust Il Woo, we have saved each other’s lives a few times. The only thing we can prove so far is how the company has been sabotaged and framed in a lot of things. There is nothing to prove Jaejoong is innocent where Ren or Taemin are concerned, especially Taemin.
Junsu looked back at Yunho with fire in his eyes.
-There is also nothing to prove he is guilty.
-Yes, Junsu, that is true. But if there are no evidence of either, how long will your boss be under investigation? How will it affect his credibility and reputation? How vulnerable will the company become? Look at my case, there is no evidence that I killed the creep, no evidence I didn’t, and yet there is an arrest order issued with my name on it. If they catch me, it won’t matter if they believe I’m innocent, I will surely end up jailed.
Junsu punched the table, startling everyone. Yoochun immediately put his arms around his boyfriend; he hated when the cheerful man was upset.
Jaejoong kept quiet, silently watching how Yunho seemed to be at ease around his men and apparently, no longer concerned with his presence. The business man could not resist trying to get some reaction from the tall man sitting, as always, at his left.
-What makes you think you can contact your friends without alerting whoever in the police force is leaking information?
Yunho looked at Jaejoong with a slightly surprised look at being addressed by the man but answered any way.
-I can’t connect my cell phone cause it might be tracked, either by bad guys or by cops. However, it shouldn’t be too difficult to find a way to contact them. They have other resources in investigating Siwon that might be useful to finally catching him.
-Forget it, Yunho. I’ve already showed you those articles. Whoever is talking, has good access to information. Didn’t you said yourself that even the thug who threatened you had info about your love life?
Jaejoong narrowed his eyes at Junsu’s remark. He even bite the inside of his cheeks to avoid asking what Junsu meant. The business man glanced in Yunho’s direction. The tall man didn’t seem affected by the remark about his love life, he had just jumped into speculation about who could be the leak. To his right, Yunho’s father was hiding a silent laugh behind his hands. Mr. Jung decided to take some pity on the beautiful man. Mr. Jung didn’t need anyone to tell him Jaejoong was having a little fit of jealousy.
-It’s hard not to find stuff about Yunho’s love life anyway. I’m pretty sure it must be some sort of a legend how he fought with the other guy for who would be the fireman’s boyfriend, only to break up shortly after. Too bad the other guy happens to work at the police Internal Affairs department.
-Very funny, Dad.
-I was kind of sad when you two broke up. I liked him. When are you going to give me a son-in-law, anyway? I ain’t getting younger, you know?
-Daaad, get off my back.
Jaejoong sat back in his chair, amused at the father-son interaction. Then it was Yoochun’s turn to intervene, eager to get back at Yunho for his earlier glare.
-Do tell us, Mr. Jung. Why is it that Yunho can never get a boyfriend for longer than a few weeks? One of the internet articles said that was partly the reason why he has such an unstable reputation as a cop. What is the defect that scare’s the guys away? I vote for occasional stupidity.
Changmin burst out laughing. Mr. Jung gave Yoochun a disapproving look that had him hiding his face behind Junsu. However, Jaejoong was more interested in the very slight blush that tainted Yunho’s cheeks. He suddenly remembered a random thing sleepy Yunho had told him, something about sizes. “He was complaining how everyone leaves him cause he’s big. Cause he’s too big. Well, can that be considered a defect?” When Jaejoong started laughing, even louder than Changmin, no one had really any idea why.
…
The feared police call finally happened on Friday morning, even before Jaejoong had left for work. Jun Ki was still staying at the house, so he gathered all the documents proving how the company had been implicated in illegal doings. Everyone wanted to accompany their boss to the police station. In the end, Jaejoong decided to go with just Jun Ki, Eric and Junsu, leaving the others to keep the investigation going.
Yunho approached them as they were almost out the door.
-Wait. I have an idea how to get them off your back regarding Ren and Taemin. And better yet, get them to investigate Siwon instead.
Jaejoong looked at the time but something in the way Yunho spoke made him give the taller man the benefit of the doubt.
-Ok. How?
