CHAPTER SIX - FRAMED AND BLACKMAILED

-Dad, I’m home!

-Ah, Yunho, come here. There is this add about a drama where an alien landed in Joseon. You have to see this.

The cop sighed. Was it some karma? Who had he punished in a previous life? His dad had always tried to limit his tv watching time when he was growing up and now look at him. The man was an addict to tv, and dramas off all things.

“Lord, give me strength.”

-Pause or record it or whatever. Time to have lunch.

Yunho left his father sitting on the sofa after lunch, happily watching some variety show. Jung Min had joined them for lunch and was equally engrossed. He paused for some moments at the door laughing at the sight. “Two kids.”

-I’ll be back soon. Don’t miss me.

-Huh? Oh, we won’t.

-Gee, Dad. Thanks.

-Anytime, son.

...

The cop still had a big smile on his face when he arrived at his car. His next stop was Kim Jaejoong’s company. Nothing remarkable about it, the façade of a legit business was perfect. All the workers returning from lunch were just regular folks. He was about to leave when he saw two men strutting to the entrance coming from the subterranean parking lot. They wore suits and looked like a mix between business men and idols or models.

“Guns? They are seriously trying to hide guns under such form fitting suits? I can totally see that ass moving and the other one has no abs. Oh, come on, no way. They can’t possible think no one sees those guns? ””

Yunho blinked and narrowed his gaze. His cop instincts told him they were not regular workers, even if the guns hadn’t given that away. His body, however, had taken the time to register their good looks which annoyed him. The cop almost banged his head against the wheel.

“Dude, you need to get laid if you’re checking criminals now.”

A car approached and the cop recognised the bearded man who stepped out as one of the company suppliers from his previous internet search.

“He looks nervous. That’s not some simple meeting he has.”

Half an hour later that same man left, looking even more nervous. One of the previous armed men got out of the building as well and got inside a car. “Ah, sexy butt is out again. Huh, Yunho, seriously? Focus, focus, focus.” Another guy followed, this time he looked like a regular worker. “No gun on this one, I think that’s the secretary, what’s his name, Lee Jun Ki? But damn if he doesn’t look like a model as well… Shit, he’s almost as good looking as Kim Jaejoong.”

Yunho started the car the second he noticed they were following the nervous supplier. The manoeuvres in traffic reinforced his idea that the guy at the wheel was an expert. He was easily following his target and at the same time seemed to be trying to chase off any possible tails.

“Ah, not me. You’re not getting rid of me.”

...

The supplier parked near a small shady nightclub, owned by Park Ri Ho, one of the mafia leaders from TOP. Yunho watched from a distance how the car with the two mysterious men slowed down but kept going. “Mafia political wars, has to be.” Yunho remained watching until he saw the nervous bearded man leave the club. “Ouch, if he looked nervous before, now he’s shaking. He looks like he just saw death.”

The cop returned to his previous spot in front of Kim Jaejoong’s company. The car the two guys had taken was parked outside signalling that they were back as well.

Yunho took the quiet time to call home.

-Jung residence. How may I help?

-Uau, Jung Min. Practicing to be a butler?

-You wish. Hey, Mr. Jung, it’s Yunho.

-Not now, I’m catching up on Noonas Over Flowers.

-Hey, Jung Min, tell that ungrateful man I won’t bring him the cookies he asked for.

-I heard that. Jung Yunho, don’t you dare. I’ll disown you.

Jung Min was too busy laughing. -Oh, you two. When are you coming home, Yunho?

-I think I may take some more time. Can you handle?

-Pfft, sure, no problem.

...

After another hour with nothing out of the ordinary, Yunho was considering returning home. He stretched his sore back muscles. The phone rang.“Shit, it’s the Captain’s number.”

-Hello.

-Yunho, I have bad news.

-Y-Yeahh?

-The bullet that killed the guy you were chasing is from your gun.

-Oh! - His stomach turned to ice. “I knew it. I’m being framed.”

-Look, I believe you would not kill him in cold blood but with your gun missing this doesn’t look good. The fact we found the guy unarmed makes it worse. Jang Geun Suk from Internal Affairs is pushing to have you accused of murder. And since your file has too many complaints of abuse of force, at this point it’s out of my hands.

-Y-yeah, Captain. I understand.

Yunho dropped his head on the wheel and closed his eyes. “Captain Rain, more like Captain Pours. Damn it! This is not happening to me, it’s not. Who framed me and why? And how the hell the guy that hit me disappeared?”

Overcome with worry, Yunho forgot about his surveillance and went to the abandoned building to try and find something. “Come on, I need to find something, anything that proves I wasn’t alone with a dead guy.” Driving down the road, Yunho was met with a surprise: the building had been demolished.

-WHAT? How is that possible? - Cold fear travelled down his spine while he dialled his Captain’s number with trembling fingers.

-CAP, IT’S GONE!!

-Yunho, do not yell at me. And it’s Captain, not Cap. And…

-Captain, the building is gone! Demolished.

-What? That’s not possible. That’s a crime investigation site.

-I’m looking at it. Gone. Caput. Finito. Nothing but a pile of rubble.

-It can’t be…

Hearing his Captain worried protest on the other end just made Yunho more nervous. Captain Rain Downpour never showed much emotion except anger and displeasure.

-I don’t know who you pissed off but you are seriously being framed.

With the lack of clues and suspects, or excess of, considering Yunho was a cop, they both got stuck at the obvious dead end. Hanging up the call, Yunho stayed frozen in his seat wondering what to do with his life. Some week he was having. That’s when a small detail caught his attention. There was a City Hall plaque on the ground. The demolition of the building had been authorized Thursday, the day after the death. And the company doing the demolition? Kim Jaejoong’s company.

Jung Yunho has seen a lot of coincidences in his life. But his instincts are screaming at him that it’s no coincidence that it was Kim Jaejoong’s company demolishing the building into where he chased a sex offender that ended up dead.

“This is too weird. He can’t possibly know I’m on to him. Unless someone saw me talking with Choi Siwon. But that was Thursday night, the demolishing was during the same day.”

Desperate for answers the cop returned to Kim Jaejoong’s company. The work day was over. The workers were leaving for the weekend. The two armed men were in the lobby. Yunho saw in wonder and contained anger how everyone greeted them friendly. A big sleek Mercedes with tainted windows parked at the entrance. The driver stepped out and Yunho swallowed. “Damn, where do all these hot guys come from? He’s almost as tall as me.”

The driver returned to the car after talking with the other two men. And then, the elevator doors opened and Kim Jaejoong himself stepped into the lobby. He acknowledged the two men with a nod and walked to the car. Against his better judgement, against his own will, Yunho found himself mesmerized.

“God! He’s unreal. Better than the pictures. Even with all the hot guys around he still stands out. This is crazy! A guy that looks like that and can have anyone he wants is preying on kids?”

The cop drove behind at a greater distance than before. This tall driver was better than Sexy Butt. More than one time, Yunho almost lost the car. Any lingering doubts he may have had disappeared when they arrived at TOP’s club. Yunho watched how the four men walked to the entrance, Jaejoong in the middle. Something about their demeanour told Yunho that even Jaejoong would be able to put up a good fight with the muscle bouncer if necessary.

Soon they were out again. Yunho paid attention to every detail of their body language. The driver was obviously in charge and appeared calm even if something about how he was walking at a brisker pace than before told Yunho he was nervous. The other two men were less good at appearing calm and kept glancing at Kim Jaejoong from the corner of their eyes. “Oh, that meeting didn’t go well. Definitely mafia wars.” Yunho forced himself to remember the evidence against the angelic face in the middle of No Abs and Sexy Butt and studied Jaejoong with a detached eye. He was paler than before, his body tense, his eyes were unfocused and if not for the men surrounding him he would have probably walked into a pole.

Just as Yunho was preparing to follow them again, his phone rang with an unknown number.

-Hello. Who is this?

-Hi, I heard you were missing a gun?
