CHAPTER FOUR - YUNHO INTRO
Jung Yunho is a cop. Or at least he hopes he can still be a cop. He used to want to be an architect and is scared that he might stop being a cop as well. The problem is that at the end of that road he can only be a murder convict and that is just unfair. He’s really having a bad week.
The week started out with a Monday like any other Monday. The second he approached his desk at the police station, his phone buzzed and a huge pile of overdue paperwork threatened to fall to the floor. Then his Captain gave him a new case to add to the insane work load he already had and he carried on doing his field work trying to investigate as many of his cases as he could. It was hard, harder even since he was physically tired after spending his weekend moving with his father to a new apartment building.
Then comes Wednesday morning and he has a corpse on his hands and no way to prove he didn’t kill the son of a bitch. Now, it’s not that his Captain doesn’t believe he is innocent, it’s just that there is no way Yunho can prove it.
That morning was a mess from start to finish. Yunho and his partner were on the trail of a disgusting sex offender, one that had eluded the police several times, except now they finally had evidence against him. The ensuing car chase led them to the outskirts of town, shots being fired in the process. Just when he had the guy trapped on an abandoned building, he got hit on the head from behind. As the cop was barely recovering, he heard a shot. Getting up as fast as his throbbing head allowed, he looked around immediately but saw no one. The criminal was dead, the gun he had was missing, his own gun was missing, and as much as he searched the building, he saw no one. The worst part is that the building was on the middle of nowhere and there were no tire tracks except from his car and the dead guy’s car. And his partner, who got left behind in the car, having been shot during the chase, also saw no one.
Yunho had a very uncomfortable time explaining the events to his Captain who came to check on things personally. An entire police squad searched the place and found nothing of Yunho’s gun or of a third person. They did, however, found the criminal’s gun. Except it was found right at the building’s entrance and not on the third floor where the guy died. The desperate cop found himself on the receiving end of some suspicious stares.
By mid-afternoon Yunho found himself dealing with the jerk from Internal Affairs, who was already rubbing his hands in glee at the cop’s bad luck.Jang Geun Suk has a grudge against Yunho because of all the times the cop lost his temper with some husband who beats his wife and kids and especially with sex offenders. It’s not that Geun Suk wouldn’t hit those guys as well if he could, it’s just that he hates all the paperwork it entails. And there are also personal reasons that only make the dislike worse.
Yunho was screwed. How could he explain his missing gun? An apparently unarmed dead guy that would probably have bullets from his gun?
…
To end the day on a high note when the cop arrived home late at night, he found his father on the bathroom floor. The old man had fallen and had been laying helpless on the floor for hours, unable to move. It took all night for his father to be discharged from the hospital with a broken leg and a broken hand.
The new apartment greeted them with its bare feeling and it just increased Yunho’s dejectedness. They had only yet moved the indispensable furniture. Most of their belongings were still being held in storage. The rental contract hadn’t even been signed but that was not a problem, since the owner was his friend Jung Min who would now be his next door neighbour. At that point he felt like some heroine in a drama. There was nothing here that identified him and his dad. The only thing in the entire apartment with their name or picture was their ID cards.
After taking his father home Yunho went out to buy something he never expected to see his father wear: diapers. But it was unavoidable, with almost an entire leg on a casket and a broken hand, there was no way the old man would be able to use the bathroom without help. Before returning home, Yunho knocked on Jung Min’s door who answered with his usual hyper good mood. Breaking the news of what happened to his father, the cop was relieved to see his friend immediately volunteering to help. Jung Min assured him he’d keep an eye on the old man while the cop went to work. Yunho sent a silent prayer of thanks to the heavens above that he had moved to live next to his best friend.
Suffering the effects of a sleepless night and thinking that his week couldn’t get any worse, Yunho arrived at work and didn’t even had time to reach his desk. At the reception there was a request for him to go to his Captain’s office as soon as he arrived. That was when his heart went to his feet. Being called to the Captain’s office was why the entire police station called the man Rain behind his back. The guy could ruin your day just like rain and just as fast.
He was dismissed for the duration of the Internal Affairs investigation on the creep’s death.
Well, at least that meant he could take care of his father.
…
But Yunho is a stubborn cop. Too stubborn for his own good. That is why that very Thursday night he was on the office of Choi Siwon trying to get information on the new case he had received that Monday. It was a missing boy, just twelve years old. No way was he going to stand still and not try to help. Choi Siwon was the person who had reported the boy missing and he had called saying he had new information.
So that is why Yunho is now at the office of the hot shot lawyer watching a film footage he hopes he can erase from his memory. It showed another teen, a small feminine blond boy being beaten by the guy holding the camera. When the small film clips put together switched to the boy about to be fucked, Yunho had enough.
-STOP! Ok, that’s enough.
Yunho closed his eyes hard, trying to erase those images.
-Where did you found this? Who are they? Why don’t you want to go to the police? I told you I’m off the case.
-Mr. Jung, I trust no one. But you have earned my trust in other cases we came across each other. I think there may be more than one person involved in this.
The person filming is Kim Jaejoong, the owner of a big construction company. That is just his front, he’s actually part of the mafia, no matter how honest he may appear to be. The boy in that footage is named Ren and he was from the same orphanage as Taemin. There is a cover story that he went to America but I believe he went missing as well. I’m just glad that with Taemin, since he is much younger, it wasn’t so easy to cover up that he’s missing.
I need you to investigate Kim Jaejoong and if you can’t arrest him for what he has done to these boys, I’m hoping you can at least arrest him for his mafia connections.
I need to warn you that he is very dangerous. - Siwon sighed before continuing. - I used to date him.
Yunho stared in disbelief but supressed it seeing Siwon hiding his face in shame.
-He seemed a good guy. His face makes you believe he’s a good person. He says all the right things. He has the honest businessman act down to a T. I only found out he’s not who he says he is when I discovered this file hidden in is computer and recognised him on the footage. I was shocked. There were also files that proved his mafia association but I didn’t had time to copy those because he returned too soon. - The lawyer got up and paced around the room, obviously very nervous. - And much as I wanted to gather that evidence, I couldn’t force myself to be around him for another second. I left his house in a hurry and later broke up with him. I was such a coward I even broke up with him by phone. That day was the last time I was anywhere near him. I’m disgusted, horrified at what he did. But I’m also too scared of him. I can’t help you much more than this.
The lawyer practically fell on the chair with his face in his hands.
-These mafia files, are they on his home or office computer?
-His home. That laptop never leaves his house. Why?
-This footage is useless because you can’t see his face. We need to catch him for his mafia connections or gather more evidence. Where do you think he may be keeping Ren and Taemin? - The cop forced the ugly thought both boys might be already dead out of his head. He would save them.
-I have no idea. He has so many construction projects all over the city. His workers are loyal, most have no suspicion he’s a criminal. Even his house is more like a mansion. Not even the army of bodyguards he has is enough to fill all those rooms. That is why I hope Ren and Taemin are still alive. It would be too easy for him to hide them.
Yunho sighed in relief at Siwon’s reasoning. It made sense and he prayed the lawyer was correct.
-I can’t go to the cops with only my suspicions. He’s mafia. How many cops can be trusted? After all, you know there hasn’t been a mafia arrest in years. The fact that you are on leave is actually a good thing. No one will be tracking your movements. You have greater changes of finding some evidence against him, like maybe gaining access to his computer and hopefully finding the boys.
The cop pondered for a few minutes. He was in a big mess of his own. There was the investigation on what had happened the day before. There was his father confined to a bed. But there was really no decision to be made.
-Ok. I’ll do it. I’ll bring down the animal who did that. - Yunho said with his eyes on the frozen image on the computer: a teary eyed teen being grabbed by his hair by a monster. Determination running on his veins. “Kim Jaejoong, I am going to put you behind bars.”
