HALFWAY MAY 2008
*****
Justin is just about to make himself a sandwich when the door to the apartment swings open and Jordan storms in, slams the door shut behind him with such vengeance that it surprises Justin. He quickly approaches Jordan, seeing something is wrong.
“Jordan? Is everything alright?”
“Perfect! I’m just perfect!” Jordan nearly spits out the words. He looks upset… and hot. And immediately Justin corrects himself, he shouldn’t think about Jordan in those words.
“Come on! You’re not okay. You’re angry. What happened?”
“So-called friends, that is what happened! I’m sick and tired of being taken for granted.”
“Jordan,….” Justin tries to sooth Jordan’s anger, but it’s no use.
“Oh, go to hell, Justin, you’ve brought more than enough trouble this week!” Jordan yells at Justin and he tries to pass Justin, who grabs his arm and pulls him back.
“What… Happened?” Justin tries to sound menacing, but Jordan is hardly impressed.
He tears his arm from Justin’s hand and goes to his room, but, at the door he suddenly turns to Justin and Justin can see his tears.
“I wish I had never met you!” He goes into his room and locks his door.
Justin is left behind, hearing Jordan cry in his room, but he knows there’s nothing he can do to comfort Jordan. For a moment he stays there, undecided as to what to do next, but then he knows he has no option and picks up his phone and calls for the only person who, he thinks, can help Jordan.
“Hello?” Kevin rubs the sleep from his eyes. He and Scotty had gone to bed early and had fallen asleep in each other’s arms, tired and satisfied, so his sleep had been very deep.
“Kevin, I need to talk to Scotty.”
“Why do you call my number?” Kevin is not quite awake yet.
“He doesn’t pick up… He probably left his phone in the living-room. As usual.”
“In fact that is rather smart. At least he doesn’t get called at eleven, by his brother.” Kevin sighs, awake now. “Why do you need Scotty?”
“There’s something wrong with Jordan.”
“With Jordan?” Kevin wonders what he and Scotty can do about that.
“Is there something wrong with Jordan?” Scotty now asks, woken up by Kevin’s voice, trying to take the phone from Kevin, but Kevin holds it very tightly.
“He came home upset and he has his door locked. I can hear him cry, but he won’t talk to me.”
“Did he go to Cinnamon’s?” Kevin wants to know, wondering if something bad has happened there. Some guys there could be a bit pushy after a few drinks.
“No. He had a date with Chad.”
“Chad? As in Chad Barr My Chad?”
“Did Chad hurt him?” Scotty’s worried face makes Kevin put his phone on speaker-phone so Scotty can listen too.
“I doubt that Chad hurt him.” Kevin feels the need to defend Chad.
“I don’t know what happened.” They "hear Justin reply. “He went away, curious about the wedding-arrangements and all. And he just came back. Angry and upset, slamming doors….”
“Jordan?” Scotty has to admit that that doesn’t sound like Jordan at all.
“…. He said he was tired of being taken for granted…” Justin purposely decides not to give more info than that and then continues. “He locked himself into his room and now he’s crying.”
By now, Scotty is already up and getting dressed.
“Justin, I’m coming down and see if I can talk to him.”
“Yeah, I thought you’d stand a better chance.”
“I’ll be there in a few seconds.” Scotty promises and Justin hangs up. Kevin immediately starts dialing again.
“Who are you calling?” Scotty feels slightly irritated, because Kevin isn’t making any attempt to get dressed as well and come with him.
“The apparent source of all evil…. Hi Chad, Kev. What did you do to Jordan?” He asks straight-away as he turns on the speakerphone again to have Scotty listen in.
“I haven’t got a clue.” Chad admits. “He wanted to go home, but had a few drinks, I offered to pay for the cab to take him home. Then I suggested that he could also take the spare-room. But my idea apparently came across as some invitation to get into my bed or something and then he completely flipped. And drove off.”
“Although he’d been drinking?” Scotty asks astounded. This surprises Kevin as well, knowing Jordan the way he does.
“He is alright, isn’t he? … I’ve tried to call Justin to find out discretely, but his phone was turned off when I called. I’m worried...”
“He got home in one piece, but is terribly upset. We’re going down to see him.” Kevin replies. He hears the sigh of relief from Chad and Scotty cannot help but smile, somehow touched that Chad would care so much.
“Kevin, I swear on everything holy to me I did not mean to make some sexual suggestion.”
“I believe you, hon.” Kevin replies, with an intimate tenderness, that he reserves for very few people in his life.
“There’s something else…. He told me that he had fallen in love with some guy, but he’s straight. Maybe something awkward happened…?” Chad offers.
“We’ll find out soon enough.” Scotty says and a minute later he and Kevin take the elevator down to Jordan and Justin’s apartment. On the other side of town Chad stays on his couch for a few minutes, turning the phone between his thumb and index-finger, replaying what had happened between Jordan and him.
He knows he cannot stay here on the couch. He’s happy that Jordan is alright, he really likes him and would feel terrible if something bad had happened to him. But the fact that Jordan is angry and upset bothers him too. And he feels that if Jordan misunderstood him then he should apologize. And he should do that in person….
*****
“Jordan, open the door, please. I want to talk to you. And you know I will be here for the rest of the night, if you don’t.” Scotty threatens and finally, this is probably the 7th time Scotty asked, the door opens a bit.
“I only want to talk to you.” Jordan says.
Scotty nods and then Kevin watches the door close behind his husband.
“He’ll be alright.” Kevin says. Though he’s not sure if he tries to comfort Justin over Jordan, or if he’s worried about Scotty, or if he’s just trying to convince himself of this. He doesn’t like it when people start to act differently, from what he’s used to.
Justin looks very worried, so Kevin turns to his kid-brother.
“Really, you’ll see. Scotty and Jordan will talk and it will all work out.”
“I know, it’s why I called Scotty.” Justin replies, biting his lip, anxiously looking at the closed door, worried that Jordan will tell Scotty about him and Jordan.
“You know, Chad told me that Jordan said that he’s in love with a straight guy….” Kevin starts and Justin nearly jumps out of his skin. Jordan told Chad! And if Chad knows, then Kevin will also and then Scotty and …. Everyone will hate him for hurting Jordan…
“I didn’t mean to hurt Jordan.” Justin blurts out.
“I never said you did. It was …” Then the real meaning of Justin’s words registers. “Wait, what do you mean by those words? Why would I assume that you hurt Jordan? … Justin, are you the straight guy Jordan is in love with?” Kevin asks slowly, but he doesn’t really have to, the mortified look on Justin’s face is all the explanation Kevin needs.
*****
Jordan’s face is all puffy and red and he looks miserable. Scotty sits down next to him on the bed. After a long pause, he carefully asks:
“What happened?”
“Nothing.” Jordan sniffs and Scotty lips become a straight line.
“Nothing?” He repeats angrily. “You are angry and upset, you slam with doors, you drive… DRUNK!!!! Are you completely insane! Drunk, Jordan!!! We made a deal. Never get behind the wheel of your car after a few drinks! … How can you do that?! You could have killed someone…. You could have killed yourself.”
Jordan makes himself even smaller. He cannot stand it that Scotty is angry, though Scotty has every right to be angry with him. It was stupid.
“Chad…. He …. He wanted to have sex with me.”
“No, he didn’t… Kev and I already talked to Chad. He offered you to stay at his place.”
“Same thing.”
“No. He meant his guest-room... Chad’s house is tad bit bigger than yours or mine, Jordan.” Jordan looks at Scotty, stupefied by his words, but as he listens to them, he knows somewhere deep inside that Scotty is right…
Chad never asked him to sleep with him or to have sex. Jordan was the one who had made that connection. His hands cover his face to hide the sheer embarrassment over what happened. He had accused Chad! He had been so rude to him!
“Oh, Scotty, I’ve made such a mess of everything…” he suddenly cries, throwing himself in the arms of a bewildered Scotty.
