HALFWAY MARCH 2008
Tommy looks up when he hears Kevin’s voice outside Julia’s room. Julia is still asleep, so he gets up to meet Kevin, before he wakes her up.
“Hey...” Whatever Tommy had planned to say to Kevin, the words freeze when he sees Scotty behind Kevin. “Scotty?”
“Hi, Tommy, I heard about Julia. I’m sorry.” Scotty’s words are very genuine and Tommy chokes up. He still has a hard time dealing with the loss of their baby.
“Are you guys back together?”
“We never split up.” Kevin admits. “...look, I know you have other things on your mind...”
“No, please, distract me.” Tommy sighs. He follows Kevin and Scotty to the coffee-machine where they sit down and talk. Again Kevin explains what William did to get rid of Scotty and Tommy is shocked by his father’s actions. Shocked, but not surprised. He shakes his head, unable to understand his father.
“Scotty, I’m sorry, it must have been really tough for you.” Tommy says.
“Not really, I had Kevin’s support and that is all that really mattered to me.”
“Good to hear that.... Belated congratulations on your marriage anyway.”
“Thank you.” Kevin and Scotty reply simultaneously, making all three men laugh.
“Tommy, there’s something else, you should know... I... I told Scotty about Julia and about the fact that the baby wasn’t yours... I don’t want secrets between him and me and ...”
“It’s alright.” Tommy replies remarkably calm. “Secrets nearly destroyed Julia and me and I keep thinking how less stressful the situation could have been, if we had been honest to each other.
So, I don’t mind. Not really. Just... Keep it to yourselves, please?” Kevin and Scotty both nod. “And I won’t tell dad about Scotty either. I’m in no mood to talk to dad. Not now, not ever again.” Tommy replies bitterly.
“Why not?” Nora asks behind him. “What happened between you and your dad?”

Sarah’s mouth just falls open. She stammers a few words, unable to comprehend the significance of Joe’s words.
“You’re gonna do what?” she asks.
“I’m going on a tour... With a band...”
“Just like that?”
“No. Monique will take the kids to school in the morning. Jolene will drop them off at your mother’s in the evening, where you can get them. Other than that. You have no worries. The house seems to be able to clean and maintain itself.
Food magically appears on the table when you come home. The bills pay themselves. God knows what I’m doing here. I might as well not exist.... I’ve put up with Ojai and your family long enough. But I’m not going to be waiting on the sidelines until you and your lover decide for the blade to fall on our marriage.”
“M..my boyfriend?” Sarah asks faintly.
“I smelled his after-shave on you. Your were ‘at work’, but when I went to the Ojai Foods to surprised you, you were nowhere near your offices. I ... I eventually checked your text-messages and then I knew. You’re cheating on me. With Noah.”
“Joe...”
“No. I don’t want to hear it. No excuses. It wasn’t some one-night mistake. You chose to be with him, to cheat on me. There’s no turning back... I’ll be gone for two months. This will give both of us some time and space to think of what we want for the future.”
And with those words Joe leaves her at the bottom of the stairs, while he goes to their bedroom to pack. Sarah is completely shaken. Joe knows. About Noah. Joe is leaving. And strangely enough, she feels like a part of her is being ripped away. She doesn’t want Joe to leave. He can’t leave! He’s her husband.

Tyler brushes her hair and makes a pony-tail. She puts on her most comfortable t-shirt and drops herself on the huge couch. Jordan is off to fix something. Justin is at the hospital. And she finally has some time to deal with everything that happened around her. It all happened so fast.
One moment she had been happy, with her job, her relationship, her home. The next he broke up with her and reminded her he owned the house, so she should move. She had felt the panic, until her attention was drawn to a little announcement. And her shock couldn’t have been bigger when she met up with Justin again.
She had thought of him often. This desperate young man who saw his girlfriend carried out of a building. Dead. She had been most surprised that night, at how he was obviously broken-hearted and was still, on another level, capable to view it all very practical.
Only when he said he had been a medic in Iraq had she been able to understand his ability to separate the two events. The death of Fawn and the practicality of the paperwork that had to be made. She had admired him that night and she quickly found out that she still does.
Jordan, chatterbox that he is, has given her more information on Justin. She smiles. She had the impression that Jordan is trying to hook her and Justin up. Not that she minds. Justin wouldn’t be the worst person to get involved with, but right now, Tyler is not interested in a relationship.

Kevin, Scotty and Tommy exchange looks. Nora’s showing up unexpectedly makes them feel uncomfortable.
“Tommy, I see Julia just woke up. Is it alright if I go talk to her? Give you and Kevin some time to talk with Nora?” Scotty asks carefully. Tommy nods.
Glad to escape, Scotty leaves Kevin and Tommy to Nora.
“That was a subtle exit.” Nora says dryly. Kevin grins. Scotty can be such a Walker sometimes.
“Mom, some bad words were spoken between dad and me and .. ahm... there’s no way he can fix the damage. And I really want to leave it at that.”
“I don’t. Tommy, if he could ever count on someone in his family it was you, what could he have said to you, that was so bad that you feel, it can’t be fixed?” Nora now asks. Tommy and Kevin look at each other. Kevin knows it’s not his call to make. It has to be Tommy’s decision...
“No secrets?” Tommy asks Kevin.
“Would be best, but... it’s your life. Your story. Your secret. I’m not talking.” Kevin replies.
“I know.” Tommy sighs, then he turns to Nora. “You’re not going to like it...” He starts, and he as goes on, explains more, quotes his father, Nora gradually gets angrier and angrier.
*****
It’s been a long time since she was here. But she remembers the road very well. Nora’s grip on the steering-wheel is tight and strong. She’s so angry. And for the hundredth time she asks herself what on earth William has been thinking about lately. The way he treated Scotty! And Kevin! Justin! Kitty! And now poor Tommy and Julia!
She shivers when she sees the familiar mailbox. She parks her car, deciding walk the rest of the way. It will her give a chance to enjoy the scenery and burn away her anger. There’s an gentle sun and the wind offers an enjoyable breeze. She watches the birds in the trees. She had forgotten how pretty it is here.
Of course, everything got clouded when she walked in on William and his little girl-friend 20 years ago. She remembers how she had heard the high-pitched laughter, followed by the low sound of William’s laughter and how it had drawn her closer to the children’s tree-house. How she had found him. All over her... Inside of her...
Nora stops to catch her breath. It’s a longer walk than she expected and the memories hurt. They still hurt. William had sworn it would never happen again. He had sworn she was the love of his life. The only woman he truly loved. The other girl was just a mistake and it was all over with the other one....
She had given him another chance. Because she knows their love is strong and they are honest to each other. She knows the house is just behind those bushes... Then she a high-pitches laughter. Followed by the low sound of William’s laughter. She freezes at first, then takes another two steps. Closer to the bushes.
She can see through them now. And she sees William in the garden with a blonde woman. She’s clearly enjoying herself and William’s laughter is rather carefree too. It doesn’t have to mean anything, Nora tells herself. It’s means nothing... Then William bends over the woman and kisses her in no uncertain way.... And Nora’s little soap-bubble shatters.
