Curled up against Scotty’s body, Kevin is annoyed that someone is determined to take him away from his warm little place, by incessantly ringing the front-door bell.
“It’s nearly midnight, why can’t they let me be?” He moans.
“Leave it. It’s probably some drunk who can’t keep his fingers off those buzzers outside.”

“Yeah, probably.” Kevin sighs. He tries to catch his sleep again, in spite of the irritating buzzing sound.
“Someone is determined to get in.” Scotty sounds annoyed and Kevin pushes away his part of the blanket and gets up.

“They should do something about those drunks in the park across the street.” Scotty complains. “This is the third time this week that they tried to get a warm place to sleep in the hall.” Something about the word ‘drunk’ sinks in with Kevin. Justin?
“What we need is an new janitor.” Kevin mumbles.

“That would help.” Scotty admits.
“Who is it?” Kevin asks through the intercom.
“Kev? ... I need... help..” He hears and he grabs his keys.
“Justin!”

He yanks open the door and goes for the elevator.
“Kevin, wait!” Scotty takes off his shirt and gives it to Kevin.
“Last time mrs. Belladine saw you shirtless, she nearly sued your for sexual intimidation, remember? Wouldn’t want that to happen again?” Scotty grins at the memory.

Kevin gives him an evil look, but that is when the elevator pings and Kevin disappears from Scotty’s view. Scotty goes to the kitchen and checks his herbal teas. He finds one that helps to detox the body. Something they might need for Justin. He hopes everything will be alright downstairs.

*****

Kevin opens the door and Justin nearly tumbles in.
“Justin, where have you been?”
“I walked...” he cries softly. “.. I took a bus... the wrong one and then I got off too late and had to walk back... I’m so tired.”

He leans against the wall, looking breakable and devastated.
“I have to ask, so please don’t get mad.... Have you taken something?”
“Only the bus.” Justin replies with a sad smile.
“Really? Nothing else?”

“If I would have brought more money with me, I could have taken a cab, but .... Just enough in my pockets for the bus .... I’m not stoned. I’m not drunk. I’m just.... I just want to roll over and die.” His head falls back and in the harsh lights of the hall, the black marks under his eyes seem even darker. There are deep lines in his face.

Kevin is shocked by how empty his eyes are in this light. The rain makes Justin’s hair stick to his face, making him look even thinner than usual. His clothes are completely wet. And he feels cold, when Kevin gently touches his face to see if Justin is still awake, because he looks like he’s sleepwalking.

“Kevin, I need your help.”
“What do you want me to do?”
“Kevin, I don’t want to go home. Please, don’t ask me why, but I just need to get away from there. Can I stay with you? Just for tonight.”

“Justin....”
“If it’s inconvenient I’ll go... Honestly, I don’t want to push myself into your life....”
“You’re my brother, Justin, you are a part of my life.... come on. Let’s go upstairs, so we can put you in a bed.”

In the elevator, Kevin suddenly remembers Scotty.
“Justin, there’s something you need to know.... I have a secret and I want to keep it a secret. For now at least.”
“Kevin, I will never tell on you. You know that.”

“Good.” Kevin smiles, not entirely confident. The door is still open and Kevin invites Justin into his loft. Justin carefully looks around. He has never been here before and he feels a slight pang of guilt. Kevin has always been so supportive of him, yet, he never showed much support to Kevin.

In his defence, he had to admit that most of his time and energy had gone into staying sober and clean ... and Fawn.
“Justin is here.” He hears Kevin speak to someone. And he immediately figures out Kevin’s secret. Kevin has a boyfriend.

“I hope I wasn’t interrupting anything....” He starts, but then the young man at the kitchen-table looks up. “Scotty?” Justin stares at Scotty first, then at Kevin. “What is going on? I thought you two broke up?” In the lights of the kitchen Scotty’s golden ring shines brightly and Justin can see it’s the same as the one Kevin has. “You’re married?”

“We got married early January.” Scotty replies.
“Why all the secrecy?” Justin now asks.
“We have our reasons.... But that can wait. I’m more worried about you.” Kevin says.
“You should call your mother, Justin, she was really frantic.” Scotty suggest.

“I can’t ... I don’t want to talk to her right now.”
“Kevin? You must call your mother and let her know Justin is alright.”
“She’ll be breaking the speed-limits to get here.”
“Not if you tell her that Justin is asleep. Safe and sound on our... your couch.”

Kevin nods and dials his mom’s number.
“No, mom, it’s Kevin.... About Justin.... I’m sorry, I didn’t call sooner, but he’s alright and asleep on my couch. He ... felt the need for drugs and started walking, he didn’t bring much money with him. Just enough for the bus. ... I don’t know...

I think for now it would better if we let him sleep and I’ll ask him to call you tomorrow, alright? ... And mom? He was clean and sober. He didn’t use anything.... He could have, but he did not do that... Love you too. Goodnight.” He smiles when he breaks the connection. “You are so calling her tomorrow with a good excuse why she shouldn’t come over here.”

“I’ll prepare the guest-room.” Scotty says, gently squeezing Justin’s shoulder.
“Thank you.. and again, I’m sorry if I interrupted anything.” Justin replies shyly.
“’s Alright... you didn’t.. we were only asleep .. and we thought at first that it was one of those drunks from the park again. They created some trouble last week.”

After this explanation Scotty leaves the kitchen and Justin watches amused as Kevin’s eyes follow him, a look of appreciation on his face .
“So you two got back together?”
“We never broke up.”

“But I thought you said....”
“I said, he left for New York, but he came with me to Curacao, where I proposed to him... On New Year’s Eve...”
“Is that why you haven’t said anything? Because of Fawn?”

“No. As tragic as her death was, it was not the reason for our silence. But, right now, I don’t want to go into that.... Why didn’t you want to speak to mom? Did something happen? Something in particular?”
“No. Yes. I don’t know. I’m trying to analyse it right now.”

“So, you don’t want to tell me something either. Fair enough.”
“It’s not that I don’t want  to, it’s just... It might just be me and my hang ups. I’m just so tired, I can’t get my mind organised. I just keep going with the moment and always feel like I’m behind with everything. I don’t know.” At that moment Scotty returns.

“Room is ready. I think a few hours of sleep will do you good... Listen, I know you don’t want to take any prescripted drugs, but how about if I make you some tea. A herbal tea, that will contain camomile amongst other things? A natural way to help you get some sleep. Not some drugs or alcohol-induced coma.”

“I can give it a try...” Justin sounds hesitantly, but Scotty’s friendliness is hard to resist. He sees Kevin smug grin and he realizes that Kevin is making fun of him. “It’s kinda hard to say no to him.” Justin shrugs.
“I know.” Kevin replies with an even bigger grin and now Justin has to laugh as well.

It feels good to not have to worry about being watched all the time. He relaxes visibly as Scotty gives him the tea and after the first sips he has to admit it isn’t half bad. He feels cold and wet, but the brew warms him up and he’s starting to feel how exhausted he is physically, he doesn't dare to consider his mental state.

“Alright, off to bed with you.” Kevin then says. Scotty and Kevin help Justin out of his wet clothes and Scotty gives a warm pyjama of himself. He never wears them himself, but always has one, in case he has to go the hospital or something. And Justin doesn’t favour them either, but now the cotton clothes warm him up.

Scotty leaves Justin and Kevin alone and goes to his own bedroom and Kevin sits beside Justin. Justin coughs and the way Kevin runs his fingers through his hair, reminds Justin of the brotherly affection Kevin had always shown him, when he was still a child.
“Try and sleep a bit. You really need to sleep. You’ll feel so much better in the morning.”

“Thank you, Kevin. I didn’t know where else to go.”
“Hey, that’s what brothers are for.”
“Yes... But I wouldn’t have gone to Tommy.” Justin says softly.
“No.” Kevin replies carefully. “Goodnight, Justin.” And he kisses Justin’s cheek.
