EARLY MARCH 2008
A bit nervous Justin pours the tea for Tyler.
“That is weird.” He says to have something to say.
“Yes.” She replies, her voice as calm and considerate as it had been that night, when she had wrapped a blanket around him, had called his mother and had given him something warm to drink.
“We were expecting a man...”
“Does that mean I can’t get the room?”
“I didn’t say that.... It’s just we never thought of a woman. I... I don’t know how Jordan feels about this... to tell you the truth.”
“Jordan?”
“He owns the house, actually,...”
“The card said that I shouldn’t have a problem with gay men. Are you and he...?”
“No, we’re not... Just friends.”
“Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to offend..”
“I’m not offended. Jordan is a friend of Scotty, my brother’s husband...” Tyler raises an eyebrow, but doesn’t say anything negative... or positive. It makes Justin nervous. “So, you see, you might repeatedly see them. They live on the fifth floor.
If you have an issue with homosexuality, it would make things rather unpleasant. I mean, there’s my brother Kevin, his husband Scotty, Jordan, some of Jordan’s friends,... all gay and you can’t always escape them.”
“That is fine. I don’t mind it all. I have a friend who’s lesbian. Wonderful woman.”
“And just like that, before you know it, your mom makes you join PFLAG.” Justin jokes.
“I did, years ago, and I’m still a member.” Tyler smiles.
“... me too.” Justin reluctantly admits and suddenly they are both laughing at their strange conversation.
“Can I see the room?”
“Yes, sure, just follow me.” He shows her a room large enough for her alone.
“If Jordan approves, when could I move in?”
“Depends on the hurry you’re in to find a place.” Justin replies.
“In quite a hurry. I broke up with my boy-friend and I want to get out as soon as possible .... See, I had hoped we could split up as the mature people we are supposed to be, but he now brings his new girlfriend over, while I sleep in the guestroom...” Justin is about to reply with some words of sympathy when he hears the key in the front-door and Jordan comes in.
“Speak of the devil, there’s Jordan.” Justin laughs. “Jordan, this is Tyler. She’s here for the room, but I wasn’t sure if you would agree to having a woman in the house.”
“Sure, why not? Doesn’t bother me. Did Justin tell you the rules? No heavy drinking, no drugs, nothing that could get the police on my doorstep.”
“That last thing might be a bit difficult...” Tyler grins. “I am a police-officer.” Jordan whistles, impressed with her words.
“She was the one who kept from running into the building, the night Fawn died.” Justin says.
“Well, in that case.... let’s sit down and talk some more.” Jordan suggests.
*****
“Sarah?” The panic is Noah’s voice is very clear.
“What is it?”
“Trish. She has left me and ... she took the kids.”
“She can’t do that!”
“I’ve tried to call my lawyer, but she’s in a meeting... God, I had to leave for a convention for three days. And when I came back... Oh, my God, Sarah, almost everything is gone. Furniture, pictures, she even took our fish with her. I have no idea where she is or where my kids are.”
“Where are you now?”
“At my house.”
“You want me to come over?” Sarah looks at her watch.
“I know you’re busy...?” It’s as if he asks her not to be busy and come over.
“I’m on my way.” She replies, not sure of what she can do for him under the circumstances, but she feels the need to be there for him. She informs the receptionist that she will be gone and that she doesn’t know when she will be back. In the car she hesitates, thinks about Joe for a second, but then drives off to Noah’s house.

“Hey, babe, you look awful.” Scotty says, after one look at Kevin.
“Thanks you know how to make a guy feel better.” Kevin grins.
“No, seriously, you look tired and exhausted.”
“Well, isn’t that a coincidence. That is exactly the way I feel.”
“I must be psychic.”
“As long as you’re not a psycho, I’m fine with it.” Kevin replies and they both chuckle at their silliness.
“What happened?” Scotty then asks.
“I went over to Ojai Foods. Didn’t really have an appointment, just some docs to sign, so I figured I’d just drop in and... I ran into Tommy... who was very upset.... Dad completely alienated himself from Tommy today.”
“What did he do?” Scotty asks.
“Is it alright if I keep this to myself a little longer?” Kevin asks softly. “It’s not my secret, it’s Tommy’s and Julia’s and ... I don’t feel I’m the one who should spread the news, you know? Tommy told me something very private... For the first time in his life he confided in me and that is very important to me.
I don’t want to break to fragile trust between him and me. Honestly, Scotty, this is not about me or you. It is something very bad, very awful and I can’t even believe it myself... .”
“Kev... It’s alright. I can see how much it upsets you... If it doesn’t concern us as a couple...?”
“It doesn’t, I swear....”
“.. then, please, keep your brother’s secret for yourself.” Scotty’s words are so caring and when he wraps his arms around Kevin, Kevin presses closer to Scotty, seeking his love and tenderness.
“Scotty, please, never lie to me... About anything.” He begs.

“Hello?” Joe calls out and from the garage he can hear some noise, so he moves in the direction of the music he hears. Surprised he watches a band playing. The female singer is very good, but the music itself is a bit off beat, Joe’s musical ears immediately hear the disharmony between the two.
She stops singing and he applauds... Surprised she looks at him.
“I’m sorry.” Joe smiles. “I’m Joe Whedon, Paige’s father, I came to take her home.”
“I’m sorry too... I’m Noreen Bends. Amy’s mother.”
“Right. I usually only see Amy’s grandmother.” Joe’s still smiling.
“Did you like it? ... The music, I mean?”
“Do you want me to tell you the truth or do you want me to be friendly?” Joe asks.
“Truth.” Noreen answers without hesitation.
“You’re a good singer. You have a great band. But either you sing too fast or the bands’s too slow.”
“You can tell the difference, by hearing one song?” Noreen asks baffled.
“Music is my passion. I used to play the guitar in a band, prior to getting married.”
“Why did you quit?”
“My wife earns 5 times more than me. So when Paige was born I became a stay at home-dad.”
“No more music.”
“I teach children to play the guitar, but other than that... not really."
“Wanna play? Our own guitarist left the band two weeks ago. Here’s the music.” Joe is overtaken by Noreen’s request, but they give him a guitar and his fingers caress the strings.
He slowly starts to play, getting acquainted with the unknown guitar, growing more confident as the music slips through his fingers. When he stops, it’s quiet for about 3 seconds, before Noreen and her band start to applaud Joe’s playing. Joe feels a blush rise to his cheeks. It’s been a while since anyone applauded his work.
“You’re good... Listen, would you want to play some more for us... With us?”
“Not today. Sarah will be home soon. Have to prepare dinner.... Tomorrow?”
“Name your time.”
“Whenever you like.”
“We usually start around 9.30.” Noreen replies. Joe nods. It’s alright with him. And it isn’t until he’s in his car, driving back home, listening to Paige’s talking about Amy’s awesome mother, that he starts to realize that he hasn’t felt so alive in years. For the first time in years he looks forward to the next day.

“Are you going to divorce me?” She asks, her eyes big with fear.
