HALFWAY APRIL 2008 - FRIDAY NIGHT
*****
Jason climbs up the familiar stairs to Robert’s familiar office and he wishes he were anywhere else but here. When he knocks on the door, he hears the familiar ‘enter’ in the familiar voice and his fear becomes even bigger. He takes a deep breath and then he opens the door.
Robert is standing behind his desk, rummaging through the paper-work on it.
“Did you see the spectacle?” He asks, his voice filled with anger.
“Yes.” Jason sighs, realizing that there is just no easy way to get through this night.
“Listen, don’t worry about anything. I’ve already spoken to my lawyer. I don’t care, if she has issues with me, but I’m not going to let her hurt you.”
“Robert, …”
“She’s going to pay for this. She’s not getting away with this.”
“I need…”
“Listen…” Robert walks up to Jason and cups Jason’s face in his hands. “I will protect you, baby-brother. I won’t let anyone hurt you. These lies will soon be wiped off the table. Monday my team of lawyers will see what they can do.”
Robert places a small kiss on Jason’s forehead. A tender gesture, from their childhood, he hasn’t shown in years, but now apparently feels Jason needs, but rather then bring comfort, it only hurts Jason even more. Robert returns to his desk.
“Robert, I don’t want you to sue her…”
“I know you don’t like the hassle, Jase, and that you think it will blow over, but it won’t. Unless we crush this now, your congregation is going to be looking at you wondering if you are or aren’t gay. And you don’t want that. You don’t want to be marked as being gay, when you’re not….”
“But I am.”
“…. You will see it’s the right course of action and… What?!” Robert stares at Jason, who starts to tremble like a leaf, but clenches his fist as he repeats:
“But I am.. Kitty Walker told you the truth. I am gay.”
“No, you’re not… If you were, I would have known.”
“I’ve tried to hide it for so many years…”
“You’re my brother, you would have told me….”
“I didn’t know how.”
“You wouldn’t lie to me..”
“I kept it from you, but you never asked me if I was gay.”
“That is bullshit. How long have you known?” Robert now asks.
“Since I was about fourteen, fifteen.”
“And all these years you just pretended to be someone else?”
“I tried to protect my family …” Jason wants to add ‘and myself’ but Robert doesn’t let him finish.
“Your family? What family? I am your family! Damn it, Jason, you should have told me the truth.”
“Robert, you have no idea….” Jason tries.
“No. You have no idea how stupid I feel right now. I made a complete idiot of myself in front of everyone, I called a woman a liar while she was telling the truth, so now the only way for me to solve this, will be to apologize in public and all this because you are dishonest.”
Jason stares at Robert in total bewilderment.
“So, ultimately, this is all about your bruised ego?” Jason asks softly, his fear slowly replaced by anger. “I see my life shatter before me. Every carefully built up wall is mowed down and you’re worried about having make an apology?”
“Your lies ruined my reputation!”
“I lied to protect your reputation!”
“You should have been honest! I could have helped you, I could have…”
“Fixed me? Fixed my “problem”? I cannot be fixed, Robert. I’m gay!”
“You’re not! I cannot accept that! You’re a McCallister. This doesn’t happen to us!” Robert yells and in one swoop he throws almost everything off his desk. His anger has become so strong, that Jason backs off, afraid of Robert’s fury. He remembers that in their physical fights he usually ended up the one who got beaten the worst.
Robert sees that Jason’s eyes widen and that he takes a step back. Jason is afraid of him. His pale face make his blue eyes even more blue and he can see how many different emotions are in Jason’s eyes and on his face.
“Get out.” Robert says, turning away from Jason, waving at the door.
“Are you throwing out?” Jason asks and he says a quick prayer, hoping that Robert will not confirm his worst fears.
“Get out! I never want to see you again!” Robert now yells and for a moment Jason feels as if all the energy is knocked out of him.
Reaching behind him for the doorknob, he cannot take his eyes off Robert. He’s hoping for an apology, knowing he’s will not get one. His sob gets stuck in his throat, too proud to have itself be heard. And then Jason snaps out of his indecisiveness.
“Fine.” Jason says in a cool voice, he leaves the room and slams the door behind him.
“Jason,…” Robert whispers. Still behind his desk, Robert sinks down on his chair, his hands in front of his face in total desperation. This isn’t happening. This cannot be happening. His own brother… He picks up the phone.
“Travis, get me the telephone-number of this Kitty Walker….”
*****
“… and I just can’t get over it!” For a moment Kitty is tempted to remind Kevin that he’s been yelling at her over the phone for the last 20 minutes, so he should feel better now, but she goes for another tactic.
“I’m sorry, Kevin. I know I was wrong. I should not have talked about Jason.”
It’s quiet on the other side for about 3 seconds.
“Listen, I don’t know who you are, lady, but could you please give me my sister Kitty Walker?” Kevin asks extremely politely and Kitty laughs.
“It is me…”
“Nah, my sister would rather eat nails than admit she’s wrong.”
“That was the New York-version of me. I’ve been overhauled and the LA-version is much nicer.” Kitty says.
“I don’t think that the McCallisters will agree.”
“Tough.” Kitty shrugs.
“I can get you a good lawyer, but I think you will be in a lot of trouble with the McCallisters. They have a lot influence and more money than is good for them.”
“I told the truth.”
“The truth is irrelevant… The McCallisters are homophobes to the core. Chad told me that Jason was petrified to tell his brother the truth. That family is going to lean on Jason so heavily that every gay ambition will be crushed right out of him. That kid is never going to come out of the closet. He will come to the courtroom, tell everyone that he’s straight, deny his relationship with Chad and his word will count.”
“We’ll bring in Chad, who can confirm that Jason is, or was, sleeping with him.”
“Be realistic, sis. On one side you have Jason McCallister, a Catholic minister who never ever even got a parking-ticket and is known for his charitable work. In the other corner, a bi-sexual porn-star who’s been involved in a few scandals here and there.
Jason represents all the good things in life. Chad represents what is dirty and secret. Who do you think people will prefer to believe?”
“I saw them kissing.” Kitty says stubbornly.
“And I’m sure that Chad will speak the truth as well. He’ll have to, if he wants to remain my friend. Besides Chad may be a lot of things, he’s not a liar. But that doesn’t alter the fact that McCallister’s lawyers will steam-roll over him and discredit him anyway they can.”
“Unless Jason admits he’s gay.”
“I doubt it. Jason stands to lose everything and everyone around him if he comes out. He won’t risk it. It’s never easy to come out and face the prejudice, but coming out with the knowledge that you’ll be spit out by your family, your religion and your boss… That is quite a big hurdle. I don’t think that Jason has the courage to take it.”
“I’m not going apologize. I’m not going to take it back.”
“If I were you, I’d think it over, Kitty. I believe the truth is the most important, but I fear you’ll be in over your head.” Kevin warns, but Kitty shakes her head.
“I’m not going to take it back. Not. One. Single. Word.”
