END OF MARCH
Kevin would have to admit. He never believed that he would see that day, when the five of them would sit around a table and actually have fun. And yet, here they were. At his place. Sarah, Kitty, Tommy and Justin. Scotty had made them an excellent dinner, but had to go to “San Estephe” to work and Julia had preferred to stay home.
“So, how is Julia?” Kitty asks.
“I don’t know. Up and down. There are days when she can handle the world, but there are days, like yesterday, when she found a card to congratulate her on being pregnant, then she falls apart.”
“I can understand that.” Sarah nods and no one contests her words, making Sarah speak up about something that is on HER mind. “Don’t you guys think that mom is acting weird lately?”
“Define weird.” Kevin demands, not having been at the house for a month or so.
“She’s clearing the garden... venomously.” Sarah says.
“Spring cleaning?” Justin suggests. “She did say last February that she wanted some more open space around the pool.”
“Maybe.” Sarah concedes. “But she threw away all her old clothes.”
“Threw away? Or did she give it away to some charity?” Kitty asks.
“She told me she threw them away.... Usually if she gives them to charity, she also tells me which one and also where I’m supposed to send my donations to.” Sarah answers and the others nod in unison at Sarah’s statement, having all been there.
“But....” Sarah continues. “... that’s not all.... She and dad are sleeping separately.”
“What?!” This time it’s Tommy who voices his surprise. “How do you know?”
“Dad said it feels weird to sleep in the bedroom without mom around.”
“Did he says why she’s sleeping there?” Justin wants to know.
“Only that Dad’s allergies make him snore at night and that she can’t take it anymore.”
“I can get that.” Kevin nods. “Remember, Tommy, when we went camping and dad snored that night?”
“We thought there was invasion of grizzly-bears wrecking our camp.” Tommy grins.
“So, why would that be so strange?” Justin asks his sister.
“I don’t know, it never bothered mom before.”
“Maybe it’s got too much this year. Dad’s getting older, mom’s more quickly irritated...” Kevin sums up. Tommy plays with his glass, before looking up at Kevin.
“You don’t think that mom and dad are sleeping separately because they argued over Julia and me, do you?” Tommy asks.
“Nah. Mom told me, that at first she was furious with dad, but then Emily called her about that ankle and asked for mom’s help.
She said she didn’t even talk about it with dad anymore. And it really makes no more difference anymore either. The baby is gone and you and Julia survived, despite dad’s actions.”
“Can we get subtitles to this conversation?” Kitty says. “I have no clue what this is about.”
“Me neither.” Sarah frowns and Tommy sees the question also on Justin’s face, though Justin doesn’t say anything. He places his glass on the table before him, feeling an urge to be more open and honest to his brothers and sisters. So he takes a deep breath and he blurts out:
“Dad found out that I am sterile. Julia’s baby wasn’t mine. Julia had a one-night affair at Christmas. One thing led to another...Something stupid... When dad found about it, he was furious. Said he would never accept the child as a Walker. To his disappointment, I forgave Julia, rather than divorced her. She knows the truth about me and still loves me.
Not that it matters anymore. As Kevin said. Our baby is gone... But I did tell mom about what dad had said and she was furious when she went home, but that changed when her friend called.... And I’m glad. I don’t want mom and dad to fight over me....”
“What is wrong with dad lately?” Justin suddenly wonders. “Was he always like this? This harsh? Is it something we only come to notice now? Or is this just of the last year.”
“I’ve always thought of him as a person I could always fall back on, a shoulder to cry on, a safe haven... " Kitty says quietly.
"That is why it hurt so much when he was angry with me over Jonathan. Because he didn’t care if Jonathan and I would make each other happy. All he wanted was a good, strong, wealthy man in my life who would take care of me. Not one who would make me happy. It felt like he was willing to sell me off to the highest bidder.” Kitty says.
“He always looked down on Joe because Joe didn’t earn enough money.” Sarah nods.
“We know what he said about Fawn and that Kevin was hurt by what he did to Scotty....”
“No, Tommy... What dad did to Scotty was very offensive to Scotty, but it is not the reason why I don’t want to be near him anymore.
What he did to Scotty brought back the pain he put me through when I came out... It had been the worst time of my life and I didn’t want to re-live it. Yet, I felt like dad once again humiliated me... He has this ability to make me feel small and insignificant.”
“Kevin, why don’t you tell them, what he said to you that night, when you came out.” Justin encourages.
Kevin looks away, clearly fighting his tears, but when then he sees four pairs of eyes staring at him.
“I can’t. It’s not that important anymore ....” He closes his eyes, bites his lips and then softly says: “He apologized later on and we .... we agreed, we wouldn’t talk about again.”
“Kevin, you get upset just thinking about it. That is not 'unimportant'... What did he say to you that awful night?” Tommy asks.
“Tell them, Kevin. Tell them what happened.” Justin urges.
“Yes, I thought we agreed that we would be painfully honest to each other from now on.” Kitty reminds him.
“Come on. We’re here for you... And we’re on your side.”
“Remember: this was 16-17 years ago. ... When I told him I was gay, he warned me that I would get punished for my ‘unnatural urges’ and that if I got Aids, I shouldn’t come crying to him, because it was my own fault and I would get what I deserve...”
The silence around the table is crushing. Kevin can see Tommy’s lips form the word ‘bastard’, Kitty shakes her head in disbelief, while Sarah has tears in her eyes. Justin sits beside Kevin.
He found out, what had been said, a few weeks ago. Though he’s still angry over the way Kevin was treated, Kevin had begged him to let it go and he respects Kevin's wish, so all he does now is place a hand on Kevin's back to silently show his support
At that moment a thought comes to Sarah.
“Now I begin to wonder what dad will do if he finds out about Noah and me.” It isn’t until she notices all four of her siblings suddenly staring at her, that she understands that she spoke the words out loud and at first, she turns pale and then she starts to blush...
“I... uh... I’m having an affair.” Sarah says. “That is the real reason why Joe is on a tour with that band. He can’t stand to be around me.”
“Wow... Are you getting a divorce?” Justin asks.
“I don’t know...” Sarah shakes her head. She hasn’t spoken to Joe in over a week.
“But you can’t keep them both.” Kitty is very practical about this. “Joe wouldn’t want that.”
“No, he doesn’t ... I think he wants to divorce me... and I don’t want to lose him. I love him.”
“Then you have to ditch the other.” Tommy’s conclusion is logical.
“I don’t want to break up with Noah either.” Sarah sniffs.
“Then YOU have a problem.” Kevin states. Justin looks from one sibling to the other.
“You know what you guys need? More wine!” He then says, putting another bottle on the table.
“You’re not allowed to drink.” Kevin says.
“Don’t worry, bro, I’ll be the one to drive you guys back home.... Hand me the keys to your cars... “ He orders and only when he has all the keys, does he hand over the bottle for his brothers and sisters to open.
*****
“How much did you drink?” Scotty asks, He waves his hand in front of his face to disperse the smell of alcohol in the bedroom. He just got home and Kevin is ready to go to bed.
“Plenty,...” Kevin answers with a huge grin, pulling Scotty down for a long, sloppy, wet kiss that has Scotty gasp for all the wrong reasons.
“I could get drunk on your breath alone.” Scotty shivers. Kevin thinks Scotty’s words are hilarious and can’t stop giggling, to a point that even Scotty can’t help but smile. “I gather you guys had a good time, after I left.”
“Nope... Talked about dad.... Hence the need for a good drink....”
“I get that.” Scotty nods, taking off his shoes and socks.
“Oh, it was fun. Dad tried to sell Kitty to the highest bidder and Sarah has an affair.”
“What?” Scotty asks, shocked.
“Kitty... bidder?”
“No. Sarah... affair? .... Why is she having an affair? I thought she was happy with Joe.” Scotty asks.
“’Cause she’s in love with Joe, dummy.” Kevin answers and Scotty closes his eyes, feeling a headache come up.
“Rrriight... If she’s in love with Joe, why doesn’t she quit with the other guy.”
“She’s in love with him too...”
“Then she has a problem.” Scotty says. Kevin snaps his fingers.
“That is exactly what I said.... Are we an old married couple or what? We know exactly what the other one would say...”
“Yes, we do, honey and, yes, we are, sweetheart.” Scotty’s hand brushes Kevin’s leg soothingly.
“I knew it.” Kevin answers with a heavenly smile..
“I love you, Kevin Walker.” Scotty laughs with tenderness
“Love you too, Scotty.” Comes the muffled reply and then Kevin is asleep.

SNEAK-PEAK PART 51:
“We need a party.”
“Why?”
