STILL HALFWAY MARCH
“Kitty!” Scotty says, slightly shocked. He had not expected her here.
“Scotty, right?...” Kitty gives Kevin a confused look. “I thought you two broke up.”
“Where have I heard that assumption before?” Scotty sighs and Kevin grins. He gets up and takes his husband in his arms to give him a quick kiss.
From the corner of his eye, he can see Kitty look away from him.
“Kevin.” Scotty whispers. “Don’t use me to get back at your sister.”
“I’m not. Just wanted to kiss you. Then I noticed her reaction.” Kevin replies in the same quiet tone of voice.
“Hey, listen, if you want to be alone? ... If I should leave?” Kitty flaps her hand to show her confusion and Kevin shakes his head.
“No. We need to talk. There’s something you need to know....” And Kevin sits her back down at the table and starts to explain the whole story... again.

Sarah looks apologetic at Tommy and Julia.
“I don’t mean to be insensitive by bringing the kids with me to the hospital.... I just ... Joe has left to go on a tour with a band and mom’s away helping her friend and someone needs to look after the kids... And, that, I guess, will be me.”
Julia shakes her head.
“Don’t apologize. They are your kids, can’t ask you to hide them, because I lost my child.” She says, but her words are more courageous than her feelings. It hurts to see Cooper and Paige and to know that she lost her own baby.
“Oh, Tommy, dad is still at work. He’ll replace me for the time that mom’s away and I need to be home on time to take care of the kids.” Sarah remembers to tell Tommy. Tommy shrugs, he doesn’t really care. In fact, he’s more fascinated by the sight before him. For a moment he thinks he’s hallucinating.
The ringing sound of the elevator had captured his attention and he’s shocked to see Kitty stepping out of it, followed by Scotty. Sarah sees Tommy staring and she turns around to see what holds Tommy’s interest like this. Her jaw drops.
“Now what?” Julia mumbles.
“Kitty is here.” Sarah swallows.
“That is surprising.” Julia agrees.
“With Scotty.” Tommy adds.
“What? Did hell freeze over and someone forgot to tell me?” Julia grumpily replies.
“This is weird.” Sarah turns to Tommy. “Now what?”
“Be cool. Nothing to worry about.” Tommy advices and suddenly he grins as he understands: “They shared an elevator! Kitty won’t even remember Scotty. She’s only seen him once. She’s not interested in Kevin. She probably doesn’t know who Scotty is.”
Sarah can see the logic in this explanation and walks over to them to say ‘hi’. Kitty nervously looks at Tommy and Julia.
“Hi, I’m sorry.... about the fact that you lost the baby. I know how much you guys wanted this child.
I wanted to come sooner, but thought... with everyone walking in and out... there was no real need for me to be there... I couldn’t really do anything to help... to take away your pain... but then Kevin and Scotty ... “ She points at Scotty, proving to Tommy and Sarah that she’s well aware of who he is.
“.. they convinced me to come here... I mean, it’s not like they had to twist my arm or something. Just that.... I didn’t know if my attention was wanted... Scotty drove me here...” Kitty stammers and behind her Scotty winks and motions to welcome Kitty. Tommy manages to hold his laughter just in time.
“It’s alright, Kitty. I think I get it. I’m glad you’re here.” Tommy nods.
He reaches out his arms to her and they hug each other tightly for a moment.
“I’m so sorry.” Kitty whispers against his shoulder. “Not just about you and Julia losing the baby, but also that I wasn’t here.”
“That’s alright.” Tommy sighs and he holds his sister even closer.

LATER THAT WEEK
Nora can’t believe it’s Thursday already. The days with Emily seem to have flown by. And she’s happy with her lovely friend who spoils her with food, drink and lots of attention. Emily does everything in her power to distract Nora from thinking of William and she succeeds very well.
Nora has declared war on Emily’s garden and it helped to get rid of a lot of the initial frustration. And now Emily has a bigger place to sit and read. Two birds, one stone. Don’t think of the word ‘kill’... But Emily negotiated a truce for today and felt it was time to go on a little shopping-spree.
And so Nora enjoys her coffee, giving a proud look at all the little shopping bags on the two remaining chairs and the floor.
“Wow! I can’t remember the last time I bought this many things for myself.” Nora sighs, wiggling her tired feet under the table, accidentally getting in touch with Emily’s legs.
“Hon, I get that you’re excited, but would you behave in public?” Emily winks.
“Oh, you!” Nora ineffectively throws the paper napkin at Emily, but it lands on the little flower standing between them on the table. Emily laughs, but stops when she sees Nora’s smile literally freeze on her face.
“What’s wrong?” Emily asks.
“That’s her.... The Blonde One. She just walked in.”
“With William?”
“No, alone... Don’t look!” Nora warns, but Emily looks anyway.
“Not the one with the blue dress?”
“Yeah, that’s her.” Nora replies.
“You have to be kidding me!.. I know her. Well, not really that good, but ... I don’t get it. She became a widow, not that long ago. Devoted wife.... Can’t imagine...”
“Well, I saw them! I have no doubt.” Nora defends herself.
“I know her.”
“Let me guess. Public person. Known and loved by everyone...”
“No, not really. She’s not a very social person. She spends a lot of her time at home and at her work. She own a winery, their vinyards border the orchards of Ojai Foods. She lived for her husband, who recently passed away.”
“And that gives her the right to sleep with my husband?”
“I didn’t say that.... Come on.”
“Where are we going?” Nora asks.
“Talk to her. Solve this.” Emily replies, and she’s up and on her way before Nora can stop her.
Holly looks up when a shadow falls over her table. She recognizes Emily from a party, but doesn’t remember her name or who she is. In the meantime Nora catches up with Emily, just in time to hear her say:
“Mrs Harper, I’m so sorry for your loss.... I knew David. He was such a wonderful man.”
Holly smiles gently, always pleased to hear that someone speak good about David.
“Thank you, Mrs...?” She shakes her head to show that she doesn’t remember Emily’s name.
“Craft. Emily Craft.” Emily replies and Holly and Emily shake hands. Holly turns to Nora, but face to face with Holly, Nora suddenly feels embarrased and on a whim she introduces hereself.
“I’m Julia. Julia ... Wandell.” Out of Holly’s view she can see Emily frown and word ‘Julia?’, but Nora already gives Holly her most precious smile.
“Care to join me?” Holly asks.
“I’m sorry, we have our table over there.” Emily declines. “I saw you and just...”
Now what? She cannot really confront Holly Harper with ‘Julia Wandell’.
“Mrs Harper... I feel it’s my duty to warn you...” Emily starts and Holly gives her non-understanding look. “... There are rumours in our little community... about you... and William Walker....”
Holly is astonished, feeling this woman is overstepping some boundary.
“I’m sorry, but....” She starts.
“I’m a friend of the Walkers, Nora in particular, and I don’t want to see them hurt.”
Now Holly understands what Emily is going on about and why.
“You were a friend of Nora Walker? In that case, it is me who should offer my condolences to you.” Emily is so surprised by these words that she doesn’t know how to reply. Misunderstanding Emily’s silence, Holly quickly goes on: “It must have been hard to lose a friend, especially if she’s so dear to you....
I understand from what William told me, that Nora died rather unexpectedly.” Nora’s eyes widen with the surprise. “He told me the kids have a hard time dealing with the loss of their mother.” Holly is so focused on Emily, that she doesn’t hear Nora mumble a ‘I certainly hope so!’
“I wouldn’t worry about William and me.” Holly continues. “We’re just two people trying to deal with the loss of a loved one. I don’t think that either my daughter or his children are interested in seeing their parents involved with someone else. William and I just enjoy each other’s company....”
Emily swallows hard and Nora feels rather stupid. Holly is so sincere to Emily about her concern for Emily’s ‘loss’ that Nora nearly chokes up.
“Emily, dear, I have to remind you... the bus...” Nora says with a watery smile.
“Your right, Julia... the bus...” They quickly say their goodbyes to Holly and leave.
It’s only when they are in Nora’s car that Nora explodes.
“I’m dead?!”
“Well, you do look a little pale.” Emily tries to joke, but Nora gives an angry look. Nora is no mood to joke about her death.
“He told that poor woman, who just lost her husband, that he’s a widower! .. Oh, I hate you, William Walker. You’re a selfish son of a bitch and you never loved anyone but yourself and your stupid penis.”
“Yes, that would be a good definition of William Walker.” Emily nods.

SNEAK-PEEK FOR PART 50:
And yet, here they were. At his place. Sarah, Kitty, Tommy and Justin.
