EARLY APRIL
“You know what?” Justin says, grabbing a handful of popcorn.
“What?” Jordan asks, slightly annoyed that Justin takes his mind of the movie they rented.
“We need a party.”
“Why?”
“Do we really need a reason? ... To just have some fun? Listen, it’s been tough these last few months. For me there was Fawn. You were jobless, money was tight. Kevin having to keep his love for Scotty a secret. Tommy and Julia lost their baby. Kitty her boyfriend. Sarah her marriage. Tyler had to work with this racist pig. Mom seems to have issues.
I thought.... Why not throw a party? We have a lot to celebrate. You got yourself a job, and house, which gave me my own freedom back. I can finally sleep at night, because I can forgive myself for not being there on time to save Fawn. Our lives are moving on. We have a future to look forward to.
Tyler’s colleague will be transferred. She’s very happy. Tommy and Julia are making their marriage their first priority. Kitty is this close to getting another job, she's staying on this coast for a while, to be with her family. Kevin and Scotty are ‘out’, pardon the pun, about their marriage to everyone, except dad.
Kevin said so himself that it takes a huge burden of their shoulders. Sarah has come to accept that Joe and she are through and she’s considering moving ahead with this Noah-dude... Come on! All this requires some serious ‘Party-time’! ...” He grabs another handful of popcorn and looks at Jordan, waiting for a standing ovation. At least!
Jordan frowns and he looks around the apartment.
“I like the way it is here now. I don’t want a stampeding herd in here, boozing and partying all night at my expense.” He complains. Justin looks less happy for a second, then his big smile is back.
“We won’t have it here, dummy. We’ll have it at my parents’ house! Big garden, nice pool. Mom can organize away, she loves these things...””
“You...” Jordan plans to tell Justin that Justin is insane for thinking his mother will like this, but then, having met Nora on a few occasions, he changes his mind.
“... think she minds if I invite a friend of two who are gay?” He asks instead.
“Nah, She’s always been hoping that Kevin would bring home more friends... which he never did... and now we know why...” Justin’s smile fades.
“Your father is often in Ojai during the weekends. Maybe we can do it on a weekend that he isn’t there?”
“Jordan, my dear friend, it looks like we have a plan.”
“...And a reason...”
“...Now we need a guest-list...”
“... And your mom’s approval...”
*****
“...So you see, mom. We need one.” Justin finishes his enthusiastic explanation. Nora looks at her son. She cannot remember the last time she has seen him this bright and cheerful.
“I don’t, honey. When should this party take place?”
“Saturday, two weeks from now?”
Nora isn’t sure if she should yes, but she doesn’t want to ruin the good mood Justin is in either.
“Let me think about it.” She answers.
“Think about what?” Kevin asks, walking into the kitchen. “Here are the papers dad needs to sign. He can mail them to my office.”
“Hi, honey, how are you?”
“Busy. Too busy to live. What did you have to think about?”
“Justin wants to throw a party here.” Nora replies.
"What Jordan and I want." Justin corrects and Kevin looks at him with disbelief.
"Jordan? Jordan thought it would be a good idea to have a party in Mom's garden?"
"No, he agreed to it... " and again Justin sums up the reason to throw a party.
“Scotty is free that night...” Kevin hums, checking Scotty’s schedule for April.
“I know. Jordan already checked. He is the only one who actually works on the next few Saturdays,... that we know of.” Justin nods.
“Oh! Problem! Scotty and I have a date with Chad Berry that night. He and his boyfriend, Steven, they broke up. We want to cheer him up.”
“Awww. Sad to hear that.” Nora sympathizes, not sure why the name Chad Berry sounds familiar to her. “Why don’t you invite him here? You can cheer him up here.”
“If I know, for sure, that Dad won’t be here, I’ll invite Chad. Naturally, Scotty can’t come if Dad’s here.”
“I’ll get rid of William, don’t worry.” Nora says, glad she has a reason to send him to Ojai. There was a time when she preferred to him have home, now that she knows about Holly, she can’t get rid of him fast enough.
Justin watches as his mother starts to think about what she’ll need to buy and what she’ll need to prepare and he congratulates himself.
“So, it’s alright then? I can tell Jordan and Tyler and the others....?” he ask excitedly.
“Yeah, honey, sure.” Nora replies absent-mindedly.
*****
“Seriously? She said yes?” Scotty asks and Jordan seems pleased as well.
“Scotty, can you perhaps help her with everything that needs to be done food-wise?” Justin asks. “I don’t want mom to spend the entire day in the kitchen.”
“And I don’t want Scotty to stay hidden in there all day either.” Kevin says with a frown.
“If we have that many people, why not ask for a caterer? I know one that is cheap and good.” Scotty suggests.
“Your former employer?”
“He is good ...” Scotty defends himself. “How about a guest-list to start with?”
“Well, there’s Justin and me...” Jordan starts. “.. maybe Mario and Quinn?... And there’s this guy, Jason, who started hanging out with us lately at Cinnamon Jack. Don’t know much about him, but he seems nice, but we suspect he’s still deeply in the closet. It might be a good opportunity to get to know him a bit better.” Jordan grins.
“Never anything wrong with a bit of networking.” Kevin laughs.
“There’s Chad.” Scotty says and he writes down ‘Chad Berry’ and Jordan nearly chokes on his drink.
“You have a friend called Chad Berry?” He looks up at Kevin.
“Yes...?” Kevin doesn’t really get it.
“That must be so embarrassing: to have the same name as a porn-star.”
“Not the same name, Jordan, our Chad is the porn-star.” Scotty corrects.
“Huh? What? You know a porn-star?” Justin is clearly shocked.
“Didn’t Scotty tell you?” Kevin asks.
“No, he told me about a Chad, who allowed you to stay in his house over Christmas, but he didn’t mention that he was the actor best known for his ....”
“... lovely face.” Kevin interrupts. Jordan frowns.
“He has a lovely face?” Jordan pretends to not understand what Kevin is saying. “I’m usually more interested about ...”
“... Other parts of his anatomy. We get it.” Scotty now grins. “But he’s also a human being, he is a great guy and very generous too.”
“Alright. I won’t ask him about his career.”
“Oh, please, do. He loves to talk about his movies. He has plenty of anecdotes to tell. And he can be so funny. Ask him.” Kevin encourages. “Just don’t stare at him, drooling, it makes him feel uncomfortable.”
Justin shakes his head.
“How come that after all these years I still find out things about my brother I didn’t know. Or rather about his friends.. That is the same guy who used to go swimming with us at the beach on Sundays, no?”
“Same one.” Kevin replies. “Chad and I just never discussed his ‘movies’ in front of mom and dad or you guys... Do you remember that one time that he went with us, but stayed on his towel most of the day, because of a ‘tummy-ache’...?” Kevin asks, Justin frowns, not sure if he should admit that he cannot remember that as well as Kevin apparently does.
“The Friday before he filmed a section of ‘Strip-poker’. He was still kinda ... tired... from having sex with four guys...” Kevin explains casually. Justin raises his hands.
“Too much info, bro. I don’t want that image in my head.” He says, picking up his mug, he looks around if anyone else wants a drink, but they refuse. So Justin goes to the kitchen with only his own mug.
“Chad never made movie called ‘Strip-poker’.” Jordan frowns.
“If he had sex with four guys, I would have remembered.” Scotty says with certainty.
“I know, ...” Kevin teases. “But we don’t have to tell to Justin, now, do we?”
