Chapter 16A
“Watch out!” Yunho turned, seeing the basketball in a moment’s notice before sidestepping in and catching it in mid-flight. The younger girl the ball was intending to hit thanked him, bowing down and blushing as his friends ran up to him, panting.
“Thanks Yunho,” said one of the guys as Yunho handed him the basketball, “we were just playing around and it got out of hand.”
“Make sure it doesn’t happen again,” warned Yunho as his friends nodded, turning away and calling for the rest of the guys to stop playing around in the hallway. As Yunho turned away, hitching his backpack higher over his shoulders, a voice called out to him, stopping him in his tracks.
“Y-yunho hyung!” Yunho froze, his hands clenching the straps of his bag tighter, his body becoming stiff. It was easier then he thought at first, looking away when their eyes met at the briefest of seconds, trying not to come to the library anymore, telling Dong Wook that they no longer kept in touch. But as the days went on, it became harder, harder for him to move on, harder for him to leave things like the way they were, harder for him to forget.
He turned slowly, as he met Changmin’s eyes from down the hallway. The younger boy’s eyes were sad, By me? Or by him? the thought running through Yunho’s mind as Min looked straight at him, eyes searching. Maybe it was because it had taken so long for Changmin to come to him, or maybe it was because of something in the younger boy’s eyes, that told Yunho the truth, the truth he couldn’t move on from.
The older boy smiled sadly at Changmin, as he simply said, “You’re not coming back to me are you?” Min looked down for a second giving Yunho his answer and as he opened his mouth, the older boy cut him off.
“It’s okay,” he said, continuing to smile with that sad smile of his, “I’m a big kid now,” he joked. But Changmin didn’t laugh, didn’t smile, and looked up, meeting Yunho’s eyes again as his own were mirrored with sorrow and regret.
“I w-want you to k-know-”
“Really,” Yunho said again, cutting him off, his hands whitening against the grip of his strap, “I’m okay,” he reassured. Changmin stayed silent, as Yunho saw him getting ready to apologize again, expressions and body movements giving him away.
“But you know,” he continued, “you can come to me any time. If there’s ever a problem,” he stopped short, before speaking again, “I’ll be there to give you a hand.”
There was a small pause, as Min nodded, accepting that Yunho didn’t want this to continue, didn’t want his apologizes, his admissions of guilt. He also tried to smile, a sad one matching Yunho’s. He nodded, bowing down to his older hyung, “Thank you,” he whispered, before turning around and slowly walking away.
Yunho stood there, in the middle of the hallway as it remained empty, the bell having rung many moments ago. He jerked when he felt a hand clasp his shoulder, turning around to see Junki’s concerned face. And at that moment, he touched his cheeks, feeling the wetness slide into his fingertips. Shit.
Yunho wiped his tears, covering his eyes with his hands to remove any traces of water remaining on them. He turned his head back towards the empty hallway.
“I’m selfish,” he said, voice low, quiet. He tilted his head, “I want to be him, but it hurts to see him with another, it hurts when he isn’t paying attention to me, isn’t giving me what he gives to him freely.” Junki stayed silent, watching his best friend break down. “I know I’ll move on, that one day it’ll become a memory-”
Yunho turned, as Junki saw the fresh tears forming, “but that doesn’t change the fact that it hurts.”
Although they never actually did it, and Yunho didn’t want to do it, didn’t like it, and although they usually felt awkward when they tried, Junki put his arms around Yunho’s body, pulling his best friend closer as Yunho’s tears fell down, sliding down his nose and dripping onto Junki’s shirt.
“I wanted to be with him-”
“I know.”
“And it’s hard for me to stay here and do nothing-”
“I know Yunho-ah, I know.”
“But I can’t. I can’t do anything-He doesn’t want me in his life anymore.”
As Yunho’s tears escaped, his first love escaped with them, as he vowed, as he promised himself, that next time it would be different, that next time it wouldn’t hurt as much. And with these last thoughts, and with these parting words, Yunho walked away from Changmin once and for all, leaving the younger boy in hopes that he would one day receive what he truly desired-his love returned.

“Thank you for doing such a terrific job Mr. Shim, I cannot say how proud we are of you for all that you’ve done for us.”
Changmin bowed consistently as he met the principle, the older man shaking the younger boy’s hand as the teachers all smiled around him, blushing as they praised him.
“We’ve had many tutors, but as the first to stay longer as you have and to show such satisfactory results, while still keeping up your own high grades-truly, we thank you for your efforts in school.”
“We left a message for your mother,” said the school secretary with a kind smile “and made a note of it in your high school records.”
“Keep up the good work!” said the principle with a large smile, thumping the younger boy on the back as Changmin slowly walked out of the school office, bowing all the way. He clutched the goodwill letter his principle had given him in his hands, as he made his way to the tutoring session.
When he reached the room and walked inside, Min was slightly surprised to see Jaejoong waiting for him, as the older boy looked up and with a scowl, said “You’re late.” Min smiled slightly despite Jae’s behavior as he walked towards the table, letter sliding on the desk.
“T-they told me c-congratulations,” he said, smiling, “for tutoring you.”
Jae snorted, pushing the letter aside, “Tutoring my ass, all we had was wild sex on top of a table and they’re thanking you for that?” Min’s smile faltered as the younger boy looked away, but Jae grabbed his wrist high, pulling him close enough that he fell on top of Jae’s chest with an oomph! As Min looked up from the folds of Jae’s shirt, he met Jae’s serious eyes.
“I’m going to the anniversary,” he said, as Min’s eyes widened.
“W-what-”
“This Friday. I’m going.” Jae leaned forward to capture what was going to leave Min’s lips with a kiss, stealing his breath and leaving the younger boy gasping for air, as he pulled back slowly, licking the side of his own lips to feel the remains of Min’s mouth.
As Changmin tried to refocus, Jae leaned forward, nipping the side of one ear, as he directed Changmin’s hands towards the pencil and the notes.
“I should thank them though,” he whispered into Min’s ear, warm breath settling on skin, “for giving me you,” he traced his tongue around the insides of the younger boy’s ears, feeling around every bone, every turn. “But I think you need to teach me more right? I need to keep up my grades.”
Leaning back with a slight smirk, Jae turned towards the notes, pulling the papers from underneath Min’s unmoving hands as the younger boy was left flustered and shy, blushing as he tried to regain his sense of thought.
True to his word, Jaejoong focused on work, saying something along the lines of “Need to graduate to get the hell out of here,” as Changmin worked harder at his outlines, writing down exactly what Jae needed for his next test and helping him review. As before, Jae was quick to memorize, quick to learn, leaving Changmin a bit more flustered each time, caught off guard at the questions that rolled off his tongue.
When Friday came and Jaejoong got up from the chair, grabbing his things to leave the room, Min automatically grabbed the corner of his shirt before he realized what he was doing, stopping the older boy.
“F-for going back-” he said, “I w-want to thank y-you.” Jae looked at Min for a few more seconds, his face as impassive as before, but something deeper reaching into his eyes, a trace of something else before walking away and heading out.

That night, Jaejoong clenched his teeth when the saw the limousine drive into his apartment parking lot, narrowly missing one of the cars. Fucking Junsu. I told him I was driving by myself.
“He requires that you are to be driven to the Anniversary by no other means of transportation than this,” said the driver, bowing. Jaejoong looked over his shoulder, seeing his car being blocked by the longer limousine. Fuck.
The driver moved to open one of the doors, but Jaejoong opened it himself, slamming the door shut as the driver returned to his seat, the car rolling onto the night traffic.
When the limo reached the house, one of the valets opened his door as Jaejoong stepped onto the driveway of the same house he left so many years ago. Disgust rolled off of him as he noticed how extravagantly the house was decorated, with lights and fountains on both sides, butlers, maids and valets moving about, limos coming in one after another as men and women dressed elegantly and belonging to the socially upper class stepped out, with fake smiles and lies of how truly beautiful everything was.
Jaejoong had seen it before, had been to these parties, knew the truth, deciphered the lies. It was one of the many reasons he had left-but he was back now, and as walked towards the main foyer of the house, memories sprung up from inside of him, memories he thought he had forgotten, memories of his childhood he didn’t want to remember.
“Jaejoong hyung!” Jae turned to see Junsu walking towards him, a large smile on his face as he pulled his older brother closer inside, “you came!”
“It wasn’t because of you,” Jae said shortly, eyes roaming around. The foyer and living room was full, as waiters with trays and drinks walked around, groups of men and women talking, laughing. The food tables were set on the side, as chefs with large white hats checked to make sure the fire was burning underneath the containers, the plates and napkins piled high.
“I know,” said Junsu, continuing to smile. It was because of him right?
As he led Jae inside, Junsu watched with envious admiration as his older brother walked with ease, uncaring and indifferent to everyone around him, but nonetheless stealing the glances of everyone else in the room. Though Jae was wearing the simplest of suits, with dress shoes and a black tie, he wore his clothes as though they were naturally tailored to fit him, a perfect match. He had taken off his cross earrings and left his hair loose, parted on the sides as though a hand raked itself through it, silky locks messily made. His eyes were sharp, as Junsu predicated they would be, face cold as walked through the main floor of his previous home.
Whispers followed them, as ladies in hanboks* and men in suits watched the two as they made their way across the room. “Who is that?” “I believe he’s the other son of the Kim family,” “The other son? But they’ve never said, I haven seen-” “He’s adopted they say, and left as soon as he reached High School,” “No wonder we haven’t heard a word about him,” “You don’t remember him? He had a quick temper, but held your attention.” “You think he’ll be the next heir of the Kim Corporation?” “He looks promising, but he is after all, a child, and if he plans to take over the way his father did-” “He’s beautiful-” “He’s unmarried I believe? With no fiancés?” “He’ll never become part of this society.” “What of the other son? He is the next heir I presume? What will become of him?”
Junsu ignored the whispers as they continued to walk, but it was harder task for him than it was for his brother, as it always was. He had lost track of how many times Jaejoong proved himself to be perfect for the position that Junsu himself held, perfect for this environment, for this world. While he was shy and quiet, wishing to please, Jae was direct, straight to the point without consideration for the other party-something as the next heir to the Kim Corporation, Junsu lacked.
When they reached where their father stood, talking to a few men with his back turned towards them, Junsu called out, “Father,” as the father turned, noticing Jaejoong.
“So you finally decided to come back?”
