Chapter 8:

“You know what to do with his piece of garbage,”

Those were the very words which sent Nino into the worst nightmare he could ever imagine. As the door slid shut behind Mr Matsumoto, the guards who were not holding Nino immediately kneed him in the abdomen, causing Nino to double over as an excruciating pain shot through his entire body. He wasn’t given enough time for the pain to dissipate before a punch was sent his way, hitting him squarely on the jaw. The impacted rippled through his body, and it was too much for Nino’s frail body to take, causing his feet to give way under him.

He would have crumbled onto the floor if those men weren’t holding him up. Nino had lost track of how times he had been beaten, but it felt like he was punched and kicked a thousand times before he was tossed onto the ground. Nino almost thought that they would leave him alone, but that was wishful thinking on his part. He tried his best to shield himself with his arms as those guards kicked him like how a group of bullies would kick an injured kitten.

Nino wasn’t sure how long the whole ordeal lasted, he had lost track of time. The only thing keeping his hopes up was the fact that they had to stop eventually. Sure enough, Nino now found himself in Jun’s empty apartment, lying in a fetal position willing the pain to go away. He was hurting everywhere, and Nino could feel blood dripping down his face. The pain was especially unbearable in his abdomen area where those guards aimed most of their attacks. But none of the hurt he was feeling compared to the stab in his heart. Wasn’t Jun’s father supposed to look after him? Why did he end up like this? Didn’t Sho say he was carrying Jun’s child? Why was his stomach still flat then?

Hatred built up in Nino as he didn’t know how or who to vent his frustration on. He hated Mr Matsumoto for making his guards beat him up. He hated Sho for making such a mistake. He hated Jun for even getting him pregnant in the first place. He hated the world for bestowing him with his curse. At least it will be over soon. He would just lie that in that position until he died from his wounds.

Night had fallen a long time ago, and it was so dark that it was impossible for anybody to see him through the open windows, and it was even more impossible to get help in the state he was in. Looks like Jun was going to have to find his corpse in his apartment when he returned from his interview three days later.

As much as Nino wanted it, death didn’t come to him. Did the world hate him that much that they wanted to prolong his suffering? Just when Nino was so sure that life despised him, he heard the door slide open and a voice gasped his name. From his angle, he couldn’t see who it was, but he knew that voice.

“Sho…” whimpered Nino with the little energy he had left.

In the blink of an eye, the physician was by his side, his panic level over shooting the scale as he assessed Nino’s injuries.

“Who did this to you?” asked Sho, hurriedly getting herbs out of his bag and applying them to Nino’s wounds. Nino tried to reply, but all that came out were coughs and droplets of blood.

“Thank god I decided to check on you,” Sho rattled on, rambling on in his panicking state, “When I found out that Matsumoto Jun left town without you, I knew I had to make sure you’re alright. Ah! I didn’t bring enough herbs!”

Next thing he knew, Nino was on Sho’s back as the physician settled for carrying him back to the agency after several failed attempts at getting a rickshaw.

“Sho…” mumbled Nino against Sho’s shoulder.

“Don’t talk,” Sho instructed.

“Sho…” continued Nino, clearly persistent, “Have you ever misdiagnosed before?”

“It is possible,” replied Sho, wondering what Nino was talking about, “But I haven’t so far,”

“Well, congratulations,”

Sho wasn’t a smart-ass for nothing. Even with the little clues he had, he managed to piece the puzzle together and knew exactly what happened, although he wasn’t sure who was responsible behind it. Thankfully, Sho managed to get Nino back to the agency at record speed, and after applying some herbs to the bruises on Nino’s pale skin, Sho insisted that Nino soak in the tub with some herbs that were good a relaxing his tense muscles. Unable to protest, Nino allowed Sho and Ohno to undress him before lowering him into the tub.

“We’ll be outside, so call if you need anything,” said Ohno as they left Nino, knowing very well that he wanted to be alone.

Nino sat alone in the small bath, the herbal smell so strong that it made him dizzy. He wanted to just fall asleep right there and then, but his body was hurting so much that he couldn’t sleep peacefully. At least the herbs were starting to kick in, all he could feel was a dull ache in his muscles. Much better than the sharp stabbing pain. Tired, Nino leaned his head against the edge of the stone tub, trying once more to drift off to sleep.

His eyes closed shut, casting him into the darkness; the mess in his head started dissolving away, leaving his mind completely thought-free. Nino was about to enter dream land when his eyes snapped open in a split second, and his body jerked up right.

Nino let out a scream as he pressed both hands against his stomach, a reflex to try to ease the sudden onset of an excruciating pain. Looking down, Nino’s eyes widened in horror as he noticed that the bath water was red.

“Help…” he whispered, his voice soft due to the shock.

Nothing happened.

“Help!” he tried again, shouting with all his might. Thankfully, someone heard his cries as the bathroom door slid open to reveal Sho and Ohno. The two froze in horror as they saw the redness of the water, and if Sho hadn’t been sensible enough, they would have stood there gulping like goldfishes for another minute.

It was a total blur to Nino what happened. Sho was shouting orders, Ohno was fetching towels. Between the two older men, they managed to haul the now half-conscious Nino out of the tub and laid his bare body on a towel which the receptionist had prepared. Nino remembered burying his face into Ohno’s warm embrace as he bit his lips trying to tolerate the pain.

Everything was numb chest down, but he knew Sho was between his parted legs, putting his medical knowledge to good use. Everything became hazy after that. He sort of noticed that Ohno was stroking his head, whispering words of encouragement. He partially noted Sho pulling out all sorts of weird herbs from his bag. But the thing he barely remembered was the loud gasp of shock that came from Sho as he stared at something in his hands.

It looked like a person, yet it looked nothing like one. It was a tiny ball attached to an oval body with four bits sticking out. But Nino wasn’t sure. It reminded him of something, but his head was too foggy to think. Besides, that tiny thing in Sho’s hands was completely drenched in blood that Nino couldn’t get a clear look.

And then it struck him.

It looked like Jun.

AN: First of all, sorry for the looooooooooooong wait. I know I've put this story off for so long, but let me tell you, I have a good reason for it. Why, you ask? Well, it's because it's getting weird. Yes, even I who wrote this story thinks that it is getting weird. Please bear with me, I'll get it done with as soon as possible (probably another 4 more chapters?). For being nice readers, I did a double update this time. Yay!
