“You don’t have to send me all the way home,” whispered Kazu in a low but determined voice while the young teen held his strong gaze, almost glaring, at his date.

“Are you ashamed of me?” asked the older teen, biting his lips unsurely. After all, Kazu had not cared about those people on the streets giving them looks of disgust as they held hands or when they shared an ice-cream cone. There was no doubt in Kazu being shy about his sexuality, even his family knew about it. So why did Kazu insist they part ways several blocks away from his house?

“You know it’s not that, Ryo,” sighed Kazu, looking like a little child torn being two of his favorite things but could only have one, “I did make it pretty clear that we were dating, didn’t I?”

Ryo nodded, “But why can’t I send you to all the way back? Or kiss you on your door step? Or watch as you return to the safety of your home?”

“I…” stuttered Kazu, mouth opening and shutting as he didn’t know how to explain his actions to his boyfriend. Ryo kept quiet, eyes focused on the smaller man as though edging him to go on. He sensed apprehensiveness in the smaller teen’s caramel eyes, or maybe it was fear, making Ryo wonder if Kazu was afraid of him.

Until he realized that he wasn’t the one Kazu was staring at.

Before he knew it, Ryo was yanked backwards as two pair of hands circled around each of his arms like a python going in for the kill. Out of reflex, he struggled, but he was no match against the two deathly grips. The only thing he could do was succumb to the force against his limbs and collapse onto the ground, his attackers pinning him down.

“Sho-nii! Masa-nii! Let him go!” he heard Kazu cry.

So this was why he couldn’t send Maiga Kazunari all the way home.

“What did you do to Kazu?!” snarled one of the men holding him down. Now Ryo was seriously confused. Who were this people? Why had they tackled him to the ground? Why were they accusing him of taking advantage of Kazu? He poor teen looked to his boyfriend for an explanation, but all he could see were two other men standing in front of a panicking Kazu, arms folded.

“He didn’t do anything!” yelled Kazu, now fighting to get pass the two who were forming a barricade between them.

“It’s ok, Kazu,” said the tan one with blonde hair, gently stroking the top of Kazu’s head, “We’re here now,”

“He didn’t do anything to me, Toshi-nii,” hissed Kazu, “Let him go this instant!”

At Kazu’s command, the two holding Ryo down could only obey. They went over to Kazu’s side, crossing their arms as they looked at Ryo with disdain.

“Let’s go, Kazu,” said the tallest of the four as the group slowly led Kazu away, but not before flexing their biceps in case Ryo had not gotten the message. Dumbfounded, Ryo could only stare as he watched his date being escorted away by four other men. He did catch Kazu’s eye as he turned around one last time in an attempt to apologize. I’m sorry, was what his eyes said, to which Ryo nodded.

This was probably the weirdest date he ever had.

“What the hell?!” yelled Kazu the moment they entered their house, “Do you guys have to keep doing that?”

The angry teen kicked off his shoes, and not even bothering to put them away properly, he stormed off to his room, slamming the door as loudly as he could to get his point across. Furious and frustrated, Kazu let out a loud yell as he dropped onto his bed, screaming in rage while clutching his hair.

“You know we were only trying to protect you,” came a voice as the door swung open to reveal his twin.

“By scaring off my date?” spat Kazu, turning his anger on his only younger brother, “You don’t see me threatening yours! And I’m older than you, Jun!”

“Not by a lot,” retorted Jun, climbing onto his fourth brother’s bed like how he used to when they were kids, “Besides, I’m supposedly biologically older than you,”

Kazu hmphed at his twin, turning his head away.

Running a gentle hand through Kazu’s tousled hair, Jun sighed, “We don’t want to see you get hurt,”

We don’t want to see you get hurt. How many times had he heard that line before? Countless of times throughout his life. Kazu couldn’t remember what happened exactly, but there was one boy he liked. That boy said he liked him too. They were out on a date. He had been happy.

That boy broke his heart.

It had been his four brothers against that one poor boy. It may have been because his brothers had sheltered him too much during that ordeal, or it may have been because it happened so long ago. Either ways, he had healed since then.

But apparently his brothers hadn’t.

That one unlucky episode was all it took to ruin his love life. Every guy that asked him out his brothers would glare at. Every date he went on, his brothers would follow. Every boyfriend he had, his brothers would threaten. Kazu didn’t know how much more of it he could take. At this rate, he’ll die an old single man who had never been made love to.

He must have been day-dreaming for quite a long time for while he reminisce his sad past and thought about his lonely future, his three older brothers had snuck into his room and were now on his bed. It was just like the old days. The five of them would gather on one of their beds (for some reason it was always Kazu’s) and just talk about anything and everything under the sun. It was hard to not smile thinking about the times they had.

“Does that mean Kazu is not mad anymore?” asked Masaki, the middle child, a huge smile on his face as he glanced cheekily at Kazu. With his four brothers looking at him with such worried expressions on his face, how he could stay angry with them? He shook his head.

After all, it was great having such wonderful brothers as Satoshi, Sho, Masaki and Jun.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Or not.

“What do you mean?” asked Kazu in a small voice, staring at the taller teen as though begging him to take back what he said.

“I’m sorry,” sighed Ryo, “I really love you, but I just can’t date someone whose brothers keep sending treat messages, I just…can’t….”

Kazu watched as the third guy walked away from him that year. It’s only the first week of February and Ryo was the third guy to dump him. He had never made it to the second date with any of his previous boyfriends, and he had been hoping that Ryo would be the first one.

All he wanted was for Ryo to stay with him until Valentine’s Day, so that he could finally have a date for February 14th. But, no. For the seventeenth time in his life (including those years when he was too young to date), he would have to spend the day assigned for romance all alone.

And it was all thanks to his stupid brothers.

“That’s it!” yelled Kazu the moment he burst in through the front door. Satoshi who was napping on the sofa woke up and stared at him. Sho who was reading the newspapers glanced up. Masaki who was watching television turned his attention away from the screen. Jun who had been preparing dinner put down the knife he was holding.

“Welcome home, Kazu,” said all four of his brothers at unison.

“Don’t ‘welcome home’ me!” snapped Kazu, “I have had it with your meddling! Nobody is ever going to ask me out ever again! Nobody! I’m going to end up an old man all alone with nobody to love me! And it’s All. Your. Fault!”

With that said, Kazu stomped off to his room, leaving his four brothers to stare at each other.

The dreaded day had arrived. The special Thursday when everybody received cards from their secret admires, chocolates from their crushes, roses from their loved ones.

Everybody, except him that is.

This year’s Valentine was especially worse now that he was in high school. The flirtatious winks, sloppy kisses and romantic hugs were even more daring compared to middle school. And for Kazu who was probably the only person without a Valentines, the day dragged by way to slowly for his liking.

“Three more minutes until it’s over,” chanted Kazu again and again in his head. Three more minutes till he could run out of the classroom, change into his outdoor shoes and speed home while ignoring all the happy couples.

It felt like forever, but the bell finally rang, releasing Kazu from his emotional torture. Without a doubt, Kazu was the first one out the door. Not even bothering to wait for his twin, Kazu grabbed his shoes, wanting to change into them when a yellow envelope fluttered from his locker.

Like a curious cat, Kazu pounced onto the yellow envelope and shredded it open, hoping that it was some last minute confession.

It was.

Dear Maiga Kazunari. It read.

Mario is red,
Your DS is blue.
I know this is cheesy,
But I really like you.

I want to be your Valentine,
Starting from right now.
In the park, today, you’d find,
Me, if your heart will allow.

Your secret admirer.
PS: I have your brothers’ permission.

“I have your brothers’ permission?” laughed Kazu. What kind of person would like him so much to ask his brothers for permission? And to be honest, Kazu really wanted to find out who was too perfect for his brothers to agree.

They say that curiosity kills the cat, and Kazu had been told countless of times that he resembled one, but he just had to find out who this amazing person was. Besides, if he didn’t go, who knows when he’ll get another date for February 14th.

Trying not to look desperate, although he truly was, Kazu headed to the park, heart thumping in anticipation. The two minute walk could not pass any quicker. Soon enough, Nino had entered the park, only to find it filled with children playing tag and old people having their midday stroll.

Could it be a prank?

Doubtful, Kazu followed the path, hoping that something would tell him that it wasn’t a cruel joke played on his heart.

Nothing.

Just as all hope was lost, he heard a familiar voice.

“Kazu…”

He turned, and there he was. Or there they were.

His secret admirers.

Kazu didn’t know if he should be delighted or disappointed to see Sho and Jun holding a huge bunch of balloons each, and Satoshi and Aiba with boxes of chocolates in their hands.

“What…?” stuttered Kazu.

“Happy Valentines Day, Kazu,” beamed Satoshi, handing the chocolates to the startled Kazu. Each of his brothers handed him their gifts (except for the balloons because there was enough of them to lift him off the ground), ruffling him lightly on the head as they did so.

“We know that it’s kind of our fault you don’t have a date today,” mumbled Sho sheepishly.

“But we did it for you,” added Jun.

“And besides, the only people we know who’d definitely not hurt you,” continued Masaki.

“Is us…” Satoshi finished, “Will you be our Valentines?”

Kazu’s face must be as red as a strawberry, but it was not like he minded. After all, with these four people, he’ll nler have to worry about his heart being broken.
