hummingbird!
ursuscelticus and mathochist gave me a hummingbird feeder for yule. I'd been seeing this hummingbird out the deck door, and wondered what he was living on here in the winter. Anyway, I put it up, and today saw (her? there's no bright throat and head patch, but maybe that's just a breeding season thing?) drinking from the feeder. Twice today ( Read more... ) -

Today the new federal guidelines on hospital visitation go in to effect, which means that no one can be legally denied access to even unconscious loved ones based on the genders or legal status of the relationship. My parents did a decent job of sex-ed, such as it was. Life is not just. The Scientist has an article examining personalities in animals: Do fish have personalities? So I'm back. It was a while ago, maybe as long as a year or more, but I recall someone here posting a ling to the most awesome satirical slideshow and commentary of their visit to the creation museum in KY. Anyone remember that, and how to find it again? -
on Plum Island and Kansas
There have been plans afoot for some time now to move the Plum Island animal disease lab to Kansas, a move which some folk have questioned, given the fact that this is the center of livestock farming country, a hub for animal travel, and lacks the helpful isolation of a large body of water around the facility. snow day *for reals*
cherokerain brought me a pretty new blue plastic sled (we'd left the other one behind when we moved), but she won't sled, on account of having busted her head sledding as a kid. I mean really, actually busted, as in broken skull bones.
