The deep sea is really still a frontier, and largely unexplored, so the best new critters are found there. Things that would amaze even the writers of midaeval bestiaries. Like this beastie:

Lovely!
I like leafy seahorses too, tho they are decidedly not deep sea. Oh, and I'm not so sure we can't screw up deep sea creatures, after all they have to eat what drifts down to them.

True, though they're much less vulnerable. And there's always deep sea vents, which aren't even dependent on the *sun* for energy.
