hummingbird!

ursuscelticus and mathochist gave me a hummingbird feeder for yule. I'd been seeing this hummingbird out the deck door, and wondered what he was living on here in the winter. Anyway, I put it up, and today saw (her? there's no bright throat and head patch, but maybe that's just a breeding season thing?) drinking from the feeder. Twice today

I love crows (and hummingbirds), too. I think crows prefer things higher in protein than straight carbs, though. It's possible they'd just filled up on something else.

Do crows suffer from bread crop like ducks and geese? They may not take it because it gives them the equivalent to a stomach ache?

Oh, the hummer is probably female. You may spot a little diamond of dark on the throat of a female.

The males keep color all year 'round.

So she is a girl, then. If I'm really lucky maybe this spring she'll nest in the tree out past the deck; I've seen her sitting in it a fair bit. How cool would that be? I could watch a hummer nest, with binoculars!
