Had to go to DMV in Newton this morning to renew my driver's license.  On the way back, as I neared the company's driveway a large black shape ran from our grassy hill across the street into a neighbor's driveway.  I figure him for a two-year old, probably about 300 lbs, black bear.  He paused in the neighbor's driveway so I got a good look at him ( Read more... )

Foxes barking in the back yard again tonight.  Way too dark and too late to see them, but with no music on and no fans running, I could hear them clearly.  Always a great sound to me, that rasping noise that sounds like a dog with a sore throat.

My commute to work is largely not filled with other vehicles; the route is mostly backroads, as I've noted here before.  Today of course there were even fewer cars thanks to it being Martin Luther King Day -- apparently lots of businesses have the day off.  I don't think what I saw this morning would have happened had there been more traffic on ( Read more... )

And there is  a screech owl outside.  I can hear it even with the windows shut ... that ghostly whispery-whistle sound that I can imitate but cannot type out.
