Had to go to DMV in Newton this morning to renew my driver's license.  On the way back, as I neared the company's driveway a large black shape ran from our grassy hill across the street into a neighbor's driveway.  I figure him for a two-year old, probably about 300 lbs, black bear.  He paused in the neighbor's driveway so I got a good look at him

Maybe it speaks to the type of content I get from my friends on LJ, or even the type of person I am, but upon reading the subject line, the last thing I considered was an actual bear. :-)

Knowing more or less where you live in the Virginia countryside, I knew that Yogi and Boo-Boo were involved. We've bears in California but I must confess that I've never seen any. There are some in the Tehachipi mountains north of Los Angeles but they are very small black bears. The grizzly bears are long gone.

And of course, when California was a nation (one of three states that were), we were known as the Bear Flag Republic

Actually, heh, I'm in NJ. I did live in Roanoke for two years, but that was more than a decade ago. Still, I can understand the confusion ... *grin*

For a moment I connected you with Virginia - ehvee lives in Virginia horse / bear country. I had dinner with him several weeks ago when I was in Virginia and just had a brain fart.
