Chapter 17 Chapter 18:
He’d been driving around for he lost track of how long now, he didn’t know how but his limbs managed to steer the car off into a familiar area. Parking it on the side of the road, he got out, he couldn’t feel his legs but he knew they were moving, so he let them take him to his unknown destination. Why am I here? Why would he be here? Why Okinawa?
But he knew why…
“If I ever feel sad, I’ll go back to that place…”
-------------------------------
After about ten minutes, he finally spotted the other, sitting on the side of a hill; he frowned, hoping that the younger man was alright. “Kamenashi!” When the other didn’t move, he walked over only to realize that he was in no immediate danger. Ryo I’ll get you for this…
He found that he couldn’t help but sigh in relief though. “Kamenashi…” The other didn’t reply again, so he walked over and stood in front of him, eyes widening as he looked down at the shaking figure. His heart skipped a beat as he in took a sharp breath.
…why are you crying…?
----------------------------
Pi was watching as the other calmly finished his lunch, “You tricked him…Kame-chan wasn’t on the phone was he?”
Ryo shook his head, “nope.”
“Why’d you do it?”
“Because I think I owe it to them to do them this second favor.”
----------------------------
He stood in front of the crying singer, unused to seeing the other cry; somehow he managed to let out a soft “what’s wrong?”
When he received no reply, he shuffled over and plopped onto the grass beside the other, listening to him cry. After a long while, there was finally a response.
“Jin…” he flinched slightly at the other’s small voice, he hadn’t been called by his first name for awhile now, Kame kept his eyes averted to the ground, “…please tell me the truth. I can’t stand this anymore…”
The A blinked, “What?”
“It’s fine if you don’t care about me anymore, it’s fine if you push me away, but-”
“What are you talking about!?” He kept his tone low but surprise was still evident in his voice, the younger man looked over in confusion, tears rolling down his cheeks. Scoffing a bit, he looked off to the left and sheepishly added, “of course I still care about you…”
There was a long moment of silence between the two, the elder with his gaze on something far away, while the other continued watching him through blurry eyes.
Jin shifted his gaze upwards towards the clouds in the sky, speaking softly, “…would you believe that on the day of my accident, I was trying to leave you?” The younger man blinked, eyes focusing a bit, Jin gave a bitter smile, “yea…that was the night I tried to leave you. You want to know why, right?”
The K merely continued watching him, silently waiting for the answer. He sighed, “I was leaving because…it wasn’t fair to you. You know what I’ve been doing, I was trying to get you to leave me…”
Kame’s brows furled, “…why?”
“Why?” he laughed scornfully, “Because I’m not brave, I couldn’t stand the thought of leaving you even though I knew you deserved someone better. So I thought it’d be easier if you were the one leaving instead.” He watched the other, “You want to know why I started in the first place.”
The younger man nodded, he pursed his lips, “It wasn’t intentional, I swear. The first time, I was out with the staff and ended up drinking too much…”
-------------------------------
He blinked a couple times, groggily, he was still at the bar. “What the…” he looked down at the stranger who was asleep on the floor, undressed, then he looked at himself. “Oh god-did I…”
Holding a hand up to his mouth in attempt to hold back the bile he felt was churning in his torso. He redressed himself and stumbled out of the bar, managing to hail a cab, he made his way back home. On the way, he had his hand over his eyes, trying to convince himself that he was dreaming and that he’d wake up under thick, warm blankets with Kame yelling at him for sleeping in.
Fumbling with the keys, he finally let himself into the apartment. The lights were still on. He looked over at the kitchen where there was a plate of food waiting for him; the nausea and guilt began building up.
Jin made his way over to the living room where the sound of the television was heard. When he reached the room, he found the younger man asleep on the couch, remote still in his hand. A moment later, the truth hit him as he stumbled to the bathroom to empty the contents of his stomach.
-------------------------------
“It was unforgivable. And seeing you asleep on the couch waiting for me after what I did…I couldn’t stand myself. After that time, I kept doing it because, I figured, if kept at it, you’d realize it too…that you deserve so much more than me. I was such an idiot…”
His voice quivered as he continued, “But you didn’t leave, even when you found out about it, you didn’t leave. You just kept waiting for me…it was so hard, staying indifferent around you,” tears began to build up as he kept his gaze on the sky, “I couldn’t take the guilt. So I started going out more, staying out later, and you still didn’t leave me…you were so miserable and lonely but you refused to leave.”
“So you decided to leave instead…”
Jin gave a nod, “yea, I was too afraid to give an explanation, too afraid to face you, too afraid to end it. So I left without saying a word. If I left then you’d be able to move on, find someone else, someone better, that’s what I kept telling myself. But the further I drove, the more I hated the idea.”
He clenched his fist, “I couldn’t stand the thought of someone else standing by your side. I couldn’t stand the thought of sharing your affection with someone else. But most of all, I couldn’t stand the thought of you standing there, wondering why I left. And knowing you, you would’ve gone and blamed yourself. I didn’t want to let that happen. It wasn’t fair to you. So I turned the car around, I was going to go back and explain everything to you, beg for forgiveness, everything, anything I had to do. But the tires slipped…”
When the other didn’t reply, he wiped away the tears threatening to spill over and gave a small shrug, “it’s alright if you don’t understand. And I’d understand if you don’t want to give me another chance. Honestly, I’m kind of scared about how this might end up. I know this won’t be easy and it’s going to take a lot of time to rebuild everything, but if it’s Kame, I’ll try my best…I don’t want to give up yet…” he gave a soft laugh, “crap, what am I saying? I’m an idiot…all I’ve done is take you for granted all this time and-”
His ranting was cut off when the younger man suddenly turned around and clutched his shirt, causing him to fall back, lying flat on the hill, “Jin…do you still love me?”
Abruptly, he found the tears returning as he laid a hand softly on the other’s back and nodded, “I don’t think I ever stopped loving you…even now, I love you so much…”
“Then…then it’s alright, isn’t it?”
“…what?”
The K asked in a small voice, “It’s alright to try again, isn’t it? You’re right, it’s not going to be easy and it’ll take time, but if you’re willing to try, I want to do my best too.”
Eyes widening, he looked down at the other, “Why…?”
Kame didn’t look at him as he whispered, “Because Akanishi Jin is Kamenashi Kazuya’s number one…always has been, always will be …”
Finally, the tears spilt over as he wrapped one arm tightly around the other while the other was slung over his eyes in attempt to stop the tears that began rolling down his cheek. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” he repeated, “I’m so sorry Kame, I’m sorry, I’ll never do it again, I’m sorry, please forgive me, I love you, I’m sorry…”
----------------------------
They fell asleep there for a couple hours, when Jin opened his eyes, the sun was setting already, he looked down at the sleeping figure in his arms. Dried streaks of where the tears fell still evident on his face. “Kame…”
“Hnn…” cinnamon eyes opened groggily and looked around, “where are we…?”
“Okinawa.” Kame sat up, suddenly remembering what had happened earlier, remained silent. The two sat there awkwardly for awhile. Jin sat up and rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly, realizing that things weren’t going to go smoothly. But he was going to at least make an effort, “the sunset’s nice…”
The younger of the two nodded, “yea…”
Another pause.
The A pursed his lips, “damn this is awkward.” He ran his hand through his hair in exasperation, “let’s try something else. Hi,” he extended his hand, “my name’s Akanishi Jin. I like ramen, dancing, singing, I went to LA for half a year and right now, I’m hungry. Would you like to go have dinner with me tonight?”
Looking over with a small smile, he shook the elder’s hand, “Do you always ask people out when you introduce yourself? I’m Kamenashi Kazuya, and I’d love to go have dinner with you, what do you have in mind?”
“Well we can’t go around to restaurants looking like zombies, so I propose we go and buy something then head back to my apartment to watch a movie. A good old fashion date.”
Kazuya nodded, “sounds like a plan to me.”
“Good,” he linked their pinkies together, “it’s a date then.
Our second first date.”
----------------------------
As they climbed the hill to where Jin parked the car, Jin looked over, “How'd you get here anyways?”
“By plane, you?”
He gave a nervous laugh, “I've never driven so fast before…and nearly yelled at the captain of the ferry…”
When they reached the top, Kame blinked, “Isn’t this Pi’s car?”
The elder of the two nodded and scratched his head, “Yep, I’m surprised no one stole it…I forgot to lock it and the roof’s still down…”
“If we have Pi’s car…how are they going to get home?”
He paused, “…opps.”
----------------------------
Ryo entered the room with a confused look on his face, “Pi, practice is over, why are we still here?”
Yamapi looked over from his magazine, “because Jin took my car, remember?”
The elder of the two sighed, “you should’ve said something, I guess we’ll have to drive my car then…”
“What are you talking about Ryo-chan? You said you didn’t want to lose your key so you put it in my keychain…”
Staring in disbelief, he groaned, “Don’t tell me Jin took it…”
He nodded, “I really hope he locked it and put the roof up…”
Ryo raised a brow, “I wouldn’t count on it, actually, I wouldn’t be surprised if your car’s been stolen or driven off a cliff by now.”
Pi frowned, “But my CD collection’s in there!”
“That’s all you’re worried about?”
He paused and gave a careless shrug, “Well that, and the fact that everyone’s probably left by now…so we probably can’t catch a ride…home.”
The two stared at each other before sprinting out of the room.
-------------------------------
They ended up driving around on the streets, looking for something to eat, in Pi’s car, listening to his CDs. “So what should we eat?”
Kame shrugged, “what do you want?”
He shrugged back, “Anything’s fine.”
“Pick something.”
“No you pick something.”
“You pick it.”
“You pick it! You’re pickier!”
The younger of the two looked over with a scowl, “you pick it! You’re the one driving!”
Jin huffed, “fine, but I get a reward for picking out dinner.”
“What kind of reward?”
“…how about a kiss?”
Kame laughed and shook his head, “Sorry, I don’t give kisses on first dates.”
He returned the laugh and looked over, “ne Kame…”
“Hm?”
“I know you haven’t actually forgiven me so why are you…you know…”
The younger man blinked, “because I think everyone deserves a second chance” he looked down in thought before changing his mind with a smile on his face, “…no, actually, I guess it’s because I love you, right?”
Jin covered his face with his hands, “Stop it! You’re going to make me cry again!”
Kame’s eyes widened as he clutched onto his seat, “Oh my god Jin-keep your hands on the steering wheel!” The elder automatically obeyed and began laughing, his brows furled as he tried to suppress his own laughter, “what’s so funny?”
He looked over with a grin, “This is the best second first date ever.”
-------------------------------
The two of them ended up unable to catch a ride with anyone, much to their dismay. Sick and tired, they made their way to the station, the overcrowded station where they had to grab hold of each others’ jackets to keep track of one another. Ryo growled, “I hate Jin so much right now…”
Pi didn’t reply but he was probably thinking something similar to it.
When they finally managed to get onto the train, it was so crowded that they couldn’t move to the car that had been reserved for them. Pressed up tightly against each other and about a million other people, no one took any notice of them.
He had his hands in his jacket pockets to keep his fingers from freezing off or from touching anything awkward in such a crowded area. Though he should be used to it, he simply wasn’t. Trying to look inconspicuous, he stared blankly at the advertisements that had been posted up above them.
Suddenly, he felt a hand slide into his pocket, grasping his softy. Pi looked over at Ryo who was slowly nodding off as the train swayed back and forth on its tracks. He smiled and continued reading the various posters. If they were to get caught, it’d cause a riot both outside and inside their company, but he couldn’t find it in himself to care at that moment as he laced their fingers together in his pocket.
-------------------------------
After they bought the food and had parked, locked and put up the roof to the car, they made their way up to their apartment. In front of the door, Jin blinked a couple times as he unlocked it.
A moment later, he had stepped in and slammed the door in Kame’s face, causing the younger man to stare in shock. He quickly took off his shoes, put the food down and reopened the door with a grin on his face, “Okaeri, Kame.”
Getting over his shock and letting the words sink in, Kame stepped in with a smile on his face, “Tadaima…Jin…”
--------------------------------
Dear Myself,
This is my reply to you. I know you’re there somewhere.
Yes, I still love him.
We’re starting over. It’s going to be hard but I won’t give up.
This is fine, isn't it?
We’re both trying our hardest right now.
And I won’t make the same mistake twice so,
Let’s continue to do our best.
Yourself,
Akanishi Jin
Owari
