Summary: He was still breathing.

Carson grabbed John's tac vest and hauled with all his strength. John was unconscious and soaked, making it harder for Carson to pull the colonel out of the river. He finally managed to get John out of the water and onto the bank, dropping to his knees and panting even as he reached for John's neck. John's pulse was weak, but there, and Carson closed his eyes in relief as he leaned down to check John's breathing.

John was still breathing, by some miracle, so Carson tugged at his shoulders until John was lying on his stomach, face turned to his right side. He dragged John's right leg up into a right angle to John's torso and arranged John's arms straight out from the shoulder, bent upward at the elbows.

Carson reached for his radio once John was in the recovery position, but encountered only his bare ear. He cursed, realizing he must have lost it in the scramble to get down the bank and get John before he went under the surface too many times.

John's ear piece was missing as well, but the transmitter was still in the tac vest. Carson retrieved it, noticing the trickle of river water from John's mouth. He winced, checking John's pulse and breathing again. Both were present, and Carson turned to the radio again, clicking the activation button, but getting only the crackle of static. He clicked it a few more times in rapid succession, hoping someone would hear it, but no one responded.

Sighing, Carson set the radio down and leaned over John again. He was starting to shiver, though he was still unconscious. Carson frowned. Normally he'd remove John's clothing and tuck a blanket around him to get him warm, but it was raining, and Carson didn't have any blankets. He didn't want to leave John completely exposed to the elements. Instead he lay down and draped himself over John, trying to cover as much of the colonel as possible, hoping his own body heat would warm John somewhat.

"Stay with me, love," Carson murmured. "Stay with me. Don't give up."

The longest five minutes of his life later, Carson heard the high pitched whine of the puddle jumper engines, and looked up to see one landing nearby. He got up and waved at the jumper, immensely relieved to see the hatch lower and Ronon and Rodney charge out toward the two men, Teyla and Lorne right behind them.

"Rescue's here, love," Carson told John. "You'll be all right."

John would be all right, he thought as Ronon carried the still unconscious man into the jumper and Teyla pulled out the thermal blankets. And when John opened his eyes and smiled at Carson, he finally believed it.
