The sound of the door opening woke Carson from a sound sleep. No human appeared in the door, and Carson sighed inwardly, counting down. Three, two, one . . .

Thump!

Carson turned to his side and met Lucy's green eyes. "Meh," she said quite clearly.

"I know, I know. The colonel went off planet and left you behind. How dare he," Carson added with amusement.

Lucy gave another meh and butted her head at Carson's chest, demanding affection. Giving in, because there really was no point in resisting Lucy, he petted the animal, getting a blissed-out purr in return.

Not for the first time, Carson wondered which slightly insane Ancient had the idea of breeding a cat-like creature with the ATA gene. Lucy's ATA gene meant she could get into all sorts of places that cats were not meant to be in, and she frequently did when Colonel Sheppard wasn't in Atlantis.

"I thought Lieutenant Cadman was watching you tonight," Carson said sleepily. Lucy's tail rose and fell in a manner that Carson recognized as her way of saying she hadn't been consulted on or approved that arrangement. He chuckled, but didn't stop petting Lucy.

"The colonel doesn't understand this fascination you have with me, you know," he said to the animal. His door chimed before Lucy could respond, and he thought it open.

Lieutenant Cadman stood in the doorway. She shook her head when she noticed Lucy curled up next to Carson. "Sorry, Dr. Beckett. She just walked out on me."

"Aye, she does that," Carson said. "It's all right, Lieutenant, she can stay here tonight. I don't think you'd be able to move her, anyway."

Lucy gave a miaow of agreement, and both Carson and Lieutenant Cadman smiled. "You're probably right," the lieutenant said. "Goodnight, Doctor." She stepped back and let the door shut.

Carson looked down at the bundle of black fur and shook his head. "Lucinicara faerus," he murmured, giving Lucy's species the scientific name the Ancients had ascribed to them. "Lucy Fur," he added, getting a louder rumbling purr from Lucy at the sound of the name Colonel Sheppard had given her. "I hate it when he goes off world, too," Carson whispered. Lucy snuggled in tighter to him, and he closed his eyes, knowing that even if he could never be with the man he loved, he had these nights to share with another being who loved him.

Comforted by Lucy's purring, Carson fell asleep.
