Had she the time to spare, Serah could have easily wandered around the castle for hours, getting lost in its long, quiet corridors, exploring the empty rooms, unused and stuffed full of dust. There was so much to see, and not enough time to see it. Part of her wished she could stay for a little longer, for just one more day, if only to see what secrets she could uncover about the place. Who had made it, what it had been used for in the past, because surely it had been more than just empty once. Kurosaki had said that castle and its enigmatic owner seemed to be based on one of his world’s fairy tales, and she was glad to see the tail end of it come to pass-that the Beast (or Basile, rather), had finally found his own happy ending ( ... )

His whole being seemed to come to life as soon as he heard Serah's voice; of course, he was already very much alive, but there was that little something that she did to him, making his heart always beat a little faster, causing a warmth to spread throughout his body, clearing his mind ( ... )

There was a split-second pause, one long enough for Serah to briefly tighten her hold on Snow’s hand as a handful of memories during her time alone on the Vestige involuntarily bubbled to the surface. She smiled then, a small one. Thin. She had even started missing him then. Both him and Lightning, and she didn’t think she had even been trapped there for more than a day or so. Even when she had been in stasis, Serah knew she had missed them then, too. She didn’t really remember her time in the crystal-she had no sense of it whatsoever; it was the same as sleeping and waking: during that, time had no meaning that one could measure or remember-but she imagined that she dreamed. And, like every other dream that had come before, it had faded into the recesses of her mind, but still left a lingering impression. One she felt even now, that eerie tug of separation. She hated the feeling ( ... )

You shouldn’t have done that.

Her voice was faint, but nothing she ever said went unnoticed. He followed her gaze, realizing what she'd meant the second his eyes fell on his brand, inoffensive for the time being but still present regardless.

"Serah," his own voice lowered slightly, and he halted once more to stand before her, one of his hands on her shoulder. "Nothing could've made me leave you behind. It was the right thing to do." And he firmly believed it, for he never could bring himself to sit idly while he knew something could be done to help someone. Whether it was crazy or not. Heroes didn't back down, and when it came to Serah, it was even truer.

He gazed at her for a moment, his fingers slowly running up her neck to reach her cheek. No, he'd never forgiven himself if he had left her alone. He had promised to be hers forever no matter what, and he intended on keeping his words.

"It was the only thing I could do," he added softly, his voice but a whisper. His eyes reflected the love he felt for her, and in that moment it ( ... )

Serah had to laugh at the mention of her sister. It wasn’t hard to imagine Lightning pacing around in some corner of the caravan, probably making a visible dent in the floor. Serah knew Snow wouldn’t do anything; the thought never once crossed her mind, she trusted him completely. And, in a way, Serah had a feeling that Lightning knew that too, that he wouldn’t do anything to put her in harm’s way if he could help it. Lightning was just being the sister she had vowed to be all those years ago. The sister who had thrown her own childhood away just to ensure that she would always be taken care of, that they would never want for anything just because they had no parents ( ... )

"What?"

The mention of Lightning teaching her how to fight sent an odd shiver down his spine; he shot her a sidelong glance, eyebrows raised. Not much could still surprise him now, but he definitely hadn't expected that.

"You won't have to run away," he protested, shaking his head slightly as he still pondered the thought of Serah fighting alongside them. He was a hero - he was her hero - and if she could protect herself, what would be left of him? "Not if I'm here," he added softly, his free hand tightening in unison with his jaw.

Snow would never let anything happen to her, but on the other hand, some things were out of his control. He had been completely helpless when she had turned into crystal, and perhaps the future held more unpleasant surprises. He couldn't risk her safety simply out of pride... but wouldn't fighting automatically put her in danger ( ... )

“I’m not asking Lightning to teach me how to fight so I can look for them,” Serah said, lowering her voice, taking a moment to admire some of the old paintings that lined the walls. “And it isn’t that I don’t trust you, either, or that I don’t feel safe. I do. I just… I just don’t want you or Lightning”-or anyone else, for that matter-“getting hurt or worse because you’re too busy making sure nothing happens to me to watch out for you. I don’t want to happen just because I can’t defend myself ( ... )

Snow followed her gaze as she spoke, noticing the paintings as they walked; it really was a beautiful place, but the discussion they were having had taken all his attention. Serah involved in their kind of fights wasn't exactly an idea he liked, or even wanted to get familiar with; he had to admit, however, that she had a point.

"Nothing's gonna happen to me, Serah," and he'd almost added 'ever' to his phrase, but he knew now that nothing was to be taken for granted. He knew of what he was capable and he had faith in his abilities, yet hadn't he been turned into a l'cie? Everything was possible, even failure... All he could do was try his hardest to ensure that it'd always end well.

But I could never learn how to replace youHe gave her hand a little squeeze, his heart heavy in his chest. Nothing had changed. Nothing would. "I think I rather like the idea," he smiled, the thought of being "stuck" with her definitely more appealing than the previous one. "Didn't I ask you to marry me, after all ( ... )

Serah grinned, her thoughts straying casually Lightning’s way. She wondered what her sister was doing right about now. ...Besides wearing down the floor. “I want to know how you did it. She doesn’t change her mind about anyone or anything that easily. Once, it took me months just to-” Whatever else Serah was going to say was cut laughably short as soon as Snow directed her attention over the nearby window. She followed his outstretched hand, eyes widening.

They really weren’t in Cocoon anymore, were they?

"You’re kidding!” she exclaimed, her voice halfway between a suppressed shout and a laugh. She released Snow's hand and sprinted over to the window. That had to be the caravan. It couldn’t be anything else. No way. Serah had never seen anything like it before. She could only stare in amazement at its impossibly tall towers and gape at the behemoth of a creature that stood beside it. Grandore, undoubtedly. “We’re going to ride in that? But it’s huge. He’s huge ( ... )
