Serah had to laugh at the mention of her sister. It wasn’t hard to imagine Lightning pacing around in some corner of the caravan, probably making a visible dent in the floor. Serah knew Snow wouldn’t do anything; the thought never once crossed her mind, she trusted him completely. And, in a way, Serah had a feeling that Lightning knew that too, that he wouldn’t do anything to put her in harm’s way if he could help it. Lightning was just being the sister she had vowed to be all those years ago. The sister who had thrown her own childhood away just to ensure that she would always be taken care of, that they would never want for anything just because they had no parents.

There was also something different about Lightning. Something had changed during the time she had been asleep. Snow had changed too, in a way. Serah could sense that they were both different somehow, though she didn’t know the details of their journey-there hadn’t been yet been enough time for the story to be told. One thing was for sure, though, Lightning didn’t seem to dislike Snow so much anymore. Serah had originally been hesitant to tell Lightning that she had been dating Snow back on Cocoon because she knew how her sister would react. She knew she wouldn’t accept Snow because he was everything she hated. They were oil and water. He was an idealist, she a realist. He probably rubbed her the wrong way on every turn. But… it looked like the two had somehow finally been able to find some common ground to stand on.

Or a burgeoning foundation of respect, at least. How far that stretched, Serah would have to see.

Serah also knew that Snow was right, but that didn’t mean she had to like what had happened. She hated that everyone was now bound to the same fate she was. Serah understood why Snow had done what he did, of course: because she knew, had things been reversed, had she not been the one first branded by a Pulse l’Cie, that she would have done the same. She wasn’t a fighter, but that wouldn’t have stopped her from helping those she cared about in whatever ways she could. She would have learned how to fight if need be.

Like now. She needed to learn.

Serah began to lead Snow out of one of the ballroom doors and into the corridor. “Speaking of, Lightning said she’d teach me how to fight. And how to use this”-she looked down at her brand pointedly, still covered by a thin layer of cloth. Even now, she still didn't like looking at it-“…the brand I mean. I know she doesn’t want to, but I don’t want to run away from things anymore.”

"What?"

The mention of Lightning teaching her how to fight sent an odd shiver down his spine; he shot her a sidelong glance, eyebrows raised. Not much could still surprise him now, but he definitely hadn't expected that.

"You won't have to run away," he protested, shaking his head slightly as he still pondered the thought of Serah fighting alongside them. He was a hero - he was her hero - and if she could protect herself, what would be left of him? "Not if I'm here," he added softly, his free hand tightening in unison with his jaw.

Snow would never let anything happen to her, but on the other hand, some things were out of his control. He had been completely helpless when she had turned into crystal, and perhaps the future held more unpleasant surprises. He couldn't risk her safety simply out of pride... but wouldn't fighting automatically put her in danger?

"...but I guess it wouldn't hurt," he mused out loud, entering a new corridor. If she was able to defend herself, both he and Lightning could be more at peace. Oh, she wasn't completely helpless, of course, but she had never been into battle. If she knew how to attack, and how to counter the ones thrown at her, she would be protected twice as well as she already was now.

Snow turned his head around to look at her, his face serious. It wasn't that bad of an idea, and even though he could see the positive side of it, he still wasn't too sure whether he really liked it or not.

"Just promise me you won't go into battle without me," he said, because no matter what, he'd always want to watch over her.
