++flashback++

Nearly four years after Midori’s pregnancy was discovered by her Father, resulting in her disappearance soon afterward, Kai finally had heard news about her again. He had overheard through his parents’ conversation that Midori had been brought back to her father’s house after the years-long disappearance, and Mr. Takashima had ordered to keep her locked in before further decision could be made for her.

Kai could still remember the thrill that shot down his entire body as soon as he overheard his parents mentioned Midori when they thought no one else was around. He had worried himself sick over the girl but he was too afraid to ask anyone what had happened to her. But something was terribly wrong with the girl, and she had to be put under intensive care.

In one gloomy day when rain was drifting heavily from the cloudy sky, Kai was ordered to get on to the car with his father, the older man simply drove in silent without tell his son where they were heading to, much later after Kai had gathered all his courage to bring up the question, then did Kai’s father tell him they were going to Takashima mansion; because Mr. Takashima had demanded him to bring Kai along, the reason being they now knew that Midori’s days were numbered and the girl only wish was for Kai to come and meet her.

Shocked to hear the latest bad news for his precious friend, Kai was so dumbfounded for the rest of his journey to Mr. Takashima’s mansion with his father he was silent. Midori was dying? Did his father actually inform him that? No…it couldn’t be! Midori didn’t deserve such things no matter what she had done in the past few years… this couldn’t be true, it just couldn’t be!

Diespte his denial, Kai was forced to face the truth when finally Mr. Takashima led his father and him toward his daughter’s bedroom personally and the now- 19 years old young man was asked to enter to the room alone to see Midori herself.

After entering the room and saw Midori for himself the boy knew that his father was telling the truth, Kai didn’t need to be a doctor to tell from Midori’s look that she was fatally ill, though so far no one had ever mentioned the true condition of her illness yet. He was so shocked to see her like this, lying in bed, so ashy pale and fragile, losing her previous liveliness, health and color but as disturbingly as he found, the illness didn’t steal her of her beauty, in fact with disease reducing her into nothing better than a skeleton and her once smooth rosy skin turning into unhealthy shade of paleness; Midori was still looking eerily beautiful…...and her eyes, they were gleaming so frighteningly bright despite her psychical weakened state, the same way like there were a ghostly flame of unwholesome passion burning through her eyes in the day when Midori told him of the secret of all her secrets years ago…
“Kai…is that you?” after what felt like eternity to the youth, he heard a soft whisper from the side of the large bed.

“Come closer……there is something I need to tell you…”

Kai could only do what she had pleaded him to do, walking to Midori’s bedside and sat next to the bed, watching as the girl turned her face to his direction with much difficulty, like the simple action of turning her head worn her out. Sorrow fell the youth’s heart as he saw his secret loved one suffering like this and he could do nothing to help her. Finally he gathered up his courage to do the one thing he didn’t dream of doing with her before-he reached out for her boney hand and candling it with his own, only to be shocked by how cold and fragile she really was.

“Midori san…”

The girl was still looking up to him quietly and Kai couldn’t think of what he should say after he uttered the girl’s name. ”Don’t worry…you will be alright soon…”

“No, Kai chan my dear, I don’t think I can make it this time…” the pale girl gave him a weak smile, before whispered sadly to her only friend. “The childbirth…when my baby is born…taking too much of my life out with it…”

The youth felt something in his heart twisting painfully at her words, was it the reason why she was so sick? Because something went wrong with the birth of her illegitimate child? It pained him deeply only to imagine what she had suffered and lost…since she wasn’t with her child anymore.

“Kai chan, there is something I need to tell you…my Father…” Midori called out again weakly. “They…don’t let my Father found my child……my lovely Uruha chan…”

“Uruha?” Kai gasped, it was the first time he ever learned of the name of Midori’s child.
Upon hearing the name being uttered, a tired yet dreamy smile appeared on her face. “Yes…my Uruha chan, he’s so small; but still so very beautiful just like his father…”

The mention of her mysterious lover, who should be righteously held responsible for Midori’s disgrace and suffer; caused anger to boil up in Kai’s heart. “Don’t say that Midori…”

“He’s my precious baby, but Father…he wants to hurt him. Don’t let him hurts my Uruha chan please, would you?”

“Midori…” Kai didn’t know what was for him to say in responding to her plead. Midori was asking some responsibility which he obviously couldn’t fulfill, but the sorrow deep in her eyes, the sound of her pleading…

“Kai chan, please…”

It was when he felt her fingers came up to grip his hand. He wanted to withdraw his hand instantly but Midori’s grip on him was deathlike. With her eyes fixing on him Midori pleaded…or demanded for the one last time. “If I couldn’t make it, please ask my Father to bury me in the greenhouse of the Northern Wing……promise me…make him do it!”

The past guilt of what had taken place between them had returned again, making Kai’s head spinning and his will weakened. Deep down his heart the youth knew that he could never really say no to Midori’s plead, despite how impossible her demand might be.

“I promise you this, Midori. I promise…”

Finally a small smile graced her bloodless lips, her grasp loosed and she fell back to the bed, it didn’t take long for the girl to fall asleep and Kai had to leave her bedroom, though he kept their conversation secret even after she passed away. It had taken him such a long time to fulfill his promise, Kai waited till the time had came he was finally able to fulfill her wishes one by one like he had promised.

***

“What…?” Aoi felt his jaw dropped open upon hearing Kai’s melancholic statement, Midori Takashima……Uruha’s mother, she went mad soon after the boy was born and hadn’t recovered till her death……that was what had truly become of Uruha’s mother before she passed away? Then Aoi also came to remember the fact that Uruha couldn’t recall anything about his own mother or their time spent together when he was small…wasn’t it part of the reason why the boy lost the memory of his early childhood?

“What possibly had happened to Midori and her child after the baby was born was still not yet clear to us, maybe we will never found out the truth. The only thing we could be certain of was that Midori…something had happened and broken her spirit during the years she ran away from home, and she did abandon her son at the gate of the orphanage when he was not more than a year old...but it took us years to put the put all of puzzles together…”

Still, in Aoi’s opinion Kai’s explanation wasn’t enough to put Aoi’s doubts to rest. “But…what has it all have to do with how you have been treating Uruha? Maybe something was wrong with his mother, still---”

“You still don’t understand, Aoi san.” Kai shook his head tiredly, and Tora who was sitting next to the lawyer, started to look increasingly uncomfortable, shifting in his seat now and then; but the younger man kept his silence.

“No…I…” Aoi murmured confusedly, Kai’s talk only served to make him more puzzled than ever.

The tensed silence was shattered only by Kai’s calm, impassive voice. “As hard as it is to accept, but we found that Uruha’s suffering from the same illness that haunted his poor mother…”

With his hands gripping to the armrests as if it was for his dear life, Aoi’s eyes widened considerably as Kai enlightened him with such unthinkable detail of his beloved friend. Was Kai basically telling him that Uruha had gone crazy, the same like his poor mother did? Probably he was suffering from some genetic mental illness passed down by his mother?

No…suddenly Aoi didn’t want to hear anymore, he wasn’t as strong as he thought himself to be…he wanted to stop Kai from continuing, but the lawyer had more to say…

”During the earlier years the boy had come to live with us, Uruha showed no sign of his mother’s illness. But then…he began to show instability two years ago, and his condition has been getting increasingly unstable that we have no other choice but to put him to convalescence in isolation before he shows further improvement…”

It couldn’t be true, he’s lying! Uruha isn’t what he said he is!

A voice was screaming within Aoi’s head, during the two weeks they were together Uruha might be appeared to be mysterious or even weird sometime, but he wasn’t insane……as the brunette tried to argue the memory of the incident at the beach suddenly surfaced through his mind…the way that there had always been some sad, ominous presence shadowing over the light haired boy, like he was nervous over some unknown threat; and when Uruha collapsed abruptly and seemingly lost what little control he had over himself, and Kai needed to injected him with medicine……was it one of the symptoms which the lawyer was referring to? That Uruha…wasn’t normal?

“Aoi san, I know the fact that we putting such a young boy into isolation must sound cruel to you. But please trust me, all we have ever wanted was to protect Uruha and prove the best environment for him to recover. We didn’t expect our plan to backfire and it was entirely my fault and reasonability that he did manage to escape… but I swear Uruha wouldn’t suffer the same circumstances again. I had vowed to help him out when he still needs my service. Not only because I’m the assigned guardian of Uruha, but it also is from Midori’s sake, because it was her dying wishes that Midori wanted me to look after her child…”

What a lie… Tora thought bitterly to himself while having to listen to Kai lying through his teeth like it was nothing. Telling pretty lies and untrue stories to convince Shiroyama that what he had done was for Uruha’s own good. Kai, you should have rather said that you need to isolate Uruha in order to protect the other people from him…

tbc...
the story seems to drag on even more...sorry ne!
