5 Kai’s heart Had been filled so fully with dread as he heard the guards’ report of Uruha’s disappearance, how he could feel blood draining from his face as he saw the empty room with his very eyes, he feared that the boy would vanish forever, the same way his mother did all those years ago…
The name of this certain girl still rang clear in his mind, the name had long become a taboo within the Takashima clan. The very name of the only child of the late patriarch of the family and the would-have-been future heir, if she hadn’t fallen from grace by running off of her father’s house, carrying some other man’s child in her womb.
Midori.
Midori Takashima.
She was dead for so long ago but the memory of her kept haunting him like a ghost.
++flashback++
He was only an awkward 11 years old boy when he first met Mr. Takashima and his beautiful teenage daughter. Kai’s father, a long time friend of the Takashima’s family and the personal lawyer of the head of the clan, had brought his young son to greet the patriarch during some party that Mr. Takashima had hosted in his magnificent mansion. It was the first time Kai had ever taken part in such grand event, with himself being formally dressed and being ordered to behave. Everything was new to him, the glorious surrounding he had found himself in, the elegant music that softly floating above the air, and the guests that crowded the great hall…... His father led him to the other side of the hall toward a circle of richly dressed people, they walked pass the crowd politely until they reached the center of the circle, and at the center of all the guests’ attention there was a man close to his old age, sitting at a grand deep color leather armchair, looking like a lord surrounding by his subjects; Kai realized quite quickly that this was no other than the master of the house. Beside this regal man, was the most beautiful young girl Kai had ever seen, smiling so charming at the adults around her; she wore a brilliant green dress of rich velvet and lacing with ribbon, making her looked like a fairy, she had soft brownish hair drifting from her shoulders, she was standing near the armchair, with one of her delicate hand rested on the backrest, keeping herself close with the host. Together they formed the scene of a respectful lord with a young lovely maiden, something that looked picture perfect to the young Kai.
When the host finally smiled up at Kai’s father, slowly standing up for a greeting, he moved with the grace of a wolf. Kai couldn’t recall clearly what his father had been talking with their host, even he noticed that his father had addressed the older man as Mr. Takashima, whom he knew was the master of the mansion. Still most of his attention was focused on the young beauty beside the older man, though unluckily she didn’t seem to notice him.
Eventually, Mr. Takashima came to notice Kai’s presence as well, looking down at him with a judge’s eyes for a moment before he spoke to him.
“How old are you, boy?”
“11 years old.” Kai answered the question as steady as he could. “And my name is Kai, Sir.”
“11 years old, a fine fellow already…” Mr. Takashima commented simply, before turning to Kai’s father. “Your father must be proud of you, I’m sure.”
Then both men laughed good-heartedly to each other, before Mr. Takashima signaled the girl in green dress to step forward and introduced her to his guests.
“This is my daughter, Midori.” The host said in a surprisingly loving voice, proud lacing his tone.
In returned Midori smiled politely to Kai’s father, then to the boy, it was the first time she looked into his eyes and Kai’s heart skipped a beat as their eyes met, but too soon she looked away.
***
After this first meeting, Kai encountered this beautiful girl who was a few years his senior, always on social gathering. She was always accompanied by her well-respected father and seemed to be adored by almost everyone within their circle. And soon they became quite friendly since there weren’t many teenagers or children of their age among the circle. Midori treated him like an older sister would, or at least tolerated him like she would a cute clingy kitty. Yet she was always caring and kind to him; and he adored the girl in returne, to him Midori always seemed so perfect and pure, like an angel that he could only worship from afar, and he was grateful that she had chose him as her companion.
And yes she didn’t seem to have many close friends, the longer he knew her, the more he sensed that Midori was lonely, she might appear to have everything a girl of her age would want: good look, a rich and powerful father, servants waiting on her from head to foot, adoration from seemingly everyone around her…but there was a sense of loneliness always at the corner of her smile, and what a pity that she only had a boy like Kai to be her regular companion. Much to Kai’s regret, he never dared to ask what was wrong, never asked the reason of her loneliness. As far as he could recall, he could only remembered her mentioning briefly that she missed her mother, who had passed away very long ago when she was merely a child.
Their innocent and somewhat strange friendship came to a hiatus as Kai went to a long vacation with his parents, who had decided to spend the better part of the year to travel around Europe. As a result Kai hadn’t been seeing Midori for a very long time. He barely reached his 14 years old birthday and Midori had just turned 16 by then and she had came to see his family off the day they departed, Kai kept on writing her letters during his journey, at first her replied letters were sent to him on regularly but later, it took longer and longer for the letters to arrive; then his wait turned from weeks to months, but no single word from her again, not even after he returned to Japan with his family.
Half a month after returning to Japan with his family, his father was invited to a small gathering in the Takashima mansion and Kai had asked whether he could go too, his father agreed to bring him to the mansion with him, but not before warning him to behave while they were there, and the older man also mentioned that Miss Takashima was sick so she wouldn’t be available to meet with the guests. Kai was worry, and he began to make up excuses to meet with his friend on the way to the mansion.
The small social gathering this time was held in the huge garden, this time the gathering wasn’t the same like the massive ball Kai had joined when he first visit the Takashima family, just a less formal tea party that only closed friends were invited. It was a beautiful sunny day, Kai watched as his parents chatting with some other guests beside the refreshment table, and another group of finely dressed ladies walking beside the lake nearby; he scanned the surrounding slowly and gazed at each face that coming into view, but to no surprise, Midori wasn’t there.
With no one to talk to and in no mood to join the guests’ activities, Kai retreated to the quieter part of the garden, away from the crowd. He turned until the he could no longer see anyone around, noticing that he had just entered a part of the huge garden that he had never been before, after passing some rows of trees a lovely rose garden coming into view, having no particular in mind, he walked into it. it was a lovely garden just as he had expected, unlike the rest of the huge garden this place was partly overshadowed by the trees that surrounding it, making the place seemed to be even more quieter. Though he wasn’t the type to fancy much about flowers but he didn’t mind spending sometime to adore its beauty, wind was blowing softly as he stepped further into it, until he heard some light footsteps from behind, like someone had just walked to the rose garden with light footsteps and stopped somewhere behind him.
Kai turned back and much to his surprise, it was Midori he found himself facing, whom according to his father’s words was supposed to be sick and not available to go out and meet the guests.
“Midori!” he gasped in surprise at the sight of her, he hadn’t seen her for almost a year already and now standing beneath the shades of the trees, she looked even more beautiful than before that he could hardly took his eyes off her, but the next second he also noticed how thin and pale she was, was she sick after all? But then why would she walk all the way to the garden instead of staying in her room and rest?
Without answering his greeting Midori slowly approached him without a word, she was wearing a soft summer dress in richly green color, a color that very similar with the one Kai had seen her wearing the first time they met. For a moment she seemed to be just the same pretty, warm-hearted girl like he had always remembered her to be, but as Kai watched her he thought he sensed that she was somewhat different, but how exactly had she changed? He couldn’t tell.
He continued to watch until she walked up right in front of him, it was then he realized he had grown enough during the last year that now he actually stood almost as tall as she was. Did she notice that too? Did she notice how much he had grown and matured through the past year, that he no longer was the little boy following her around?
“What’s that look on your face, Kai chan?” eventually it was her who broke the silence, her voice as melodic as ever to his ears, but there was surprisingly a hint of mischievous in her tone that he wasn’t used to. “We hadn’t seen each other for long, right?”
“I didn’t expect to see you here…Midori chan.” He explained shyly, studying her expression, but couldn’t find any sign there for him to read, only a half-smile there at the corner of her lips, but even this turned him cold suddenly from the inside despite it should be the same smile that he used to adored.
But she only chuckled, then turned and picked a red rose from a branch nearby without much care, Kai saw the thorns cutting the skin of her slim fingers open and tiny blood drops drifting down; but she didn’t seem to care.
“There is something I want to tell you, Kai chan.” Toying with the pretty rose in her hand, Midori said but not looking back at him.
“What is it? Midori san?” Kai asked, but for some reason his throat suddenly felt very dry and sandy.
She didn’t answer first, but after a pause she quickly looked up to him and asked him in a worried voice. “Would you promise not to tell anyone, not your parents, and not my father?”
“Yes…I promise you.” wanting to ease her worry, he could only seal the promise. “I won’t tell anyone.”
relief seemed to wash over her, “Good…thank you so much Kai chan. I don’t know who else I could talk to beside you…”
Kai waited, half worried and half excited for whatever secret Midori was about to share with him.
Then Midori leaned closer to whisper into his ear, with her melodic voice the girl announced the most shocking thing he had ever heard out of those elegantly shaped lips.
“I have a baby inside me, Kai chan…”

OH! should Kai tell Midori's secret to her father or keep quiet about it?
