Chapter 21: Illusions
Yunho spotted an oddly familiar figure standing near the gate leading to his house as he was pulling up to his estate. He wondered who would be standing outside his house in the pouring rain. He proceeded to grab the umbrella with his hand as he got out of the car.
As he walked closer under the shelter of the umbrella, the drenched figure near the gate started to walk away.
Catching a glance of the figure’s face, Yunho called out, “Jae! What are you doing here? Why are you walking-” his sentence was stopped midway as his eyes saw the blood-stained sleeve of Jaejoong’s shirt.
Yunho dropped the umbrella and hastily walked towards Jaejoong and grabbed his uninjured arm. Jaejoong turned around and whispered a barely audible "Yunho..." through his parted lips before he collapsed into Yunho’s arms.
“Jae! Jae!” shouted Yunho trying to wake Jaejoong up but his attempts were futile.
Worry could be seen on Yunho’s face. He felt that Jaejoong’s body was unusually warm. However, when he lifted Jaejoong’s limp body into his arms, he was even more worried at how light Jaejoong seemed to be.
Yunho hurriedly shouted a command into the intercom and the gate immediately opened. He rushed to the front door with Jaejoong in his arms.
As he neared the door, Ms Lee emerged with a concerned expression on her face. She had heard Yunho’s worried voice over the intercom and was wondering what could’ve happened. Seeing the unconscious figure in Yunho’s arms, Ms Lee quickly ordered the maids to prepare a room for the young man in young master’s arms.
She placed a hand on Jaejoong’s forehead and said, “Yunho, don’t worry. Your friend just has a slight fever. He’s probably just exhausted. He’ll be fine.”
Hearing these words, relief washed through Yunho’s body. He calmed himself down and said, “Ms Lee, could you please get some medicine for Jae and have someone bring it up to my room?”
“Yunho, we can always have the maids look after him for you.” informed Ms Lee.
“No, it’s fine. I’ll just bring him to my room.” replied Yunho as he made his way up the spiral stairs to his room.
Reaching his room, Yunho gently laid Jaejoong down on his bed.
Knowing that Jaejoong could not stay in his wet clothes, Yunho proceeded to take off Jaejoong’s shirt. He paid careful attention not touch the wound on Jaejoong’s left arm. He winced as he saw the fresh and old bruises and scars on Jaejoong’s body. He wondered who had caused all these injuries.
He felt angry that he had not been there to protect Jaejoong from harm when Jaejoong had been all alone. He knew that whoever had done this to Jaejoong would pay ten times over. He would make sure this guy never laid a finger on Jaejoong ever again.
He lightly traced his fingers along the scar that ran from Jaejoong’s left shoulder to beneath his collarbone.
'Just how much have you been through, Jae?'
“I promise I’ll protect you.” whispered Yunho to the sleeping Jaejoong as he carefully took care of the wounds on Jaejoong’s body. Once the wounds had been cleaned and bandaged, Yunho changed Jaejoong into a dried pair of clothes.
He walked to the bathroom, wet a towel with cold water, and placed it onto Jaejoong’s warm forehead.
Before walking away, Yunho pulled the comforter up to Jaejoong’s chin and dimmed the lights in the room.
After making sure Jaejoong was settled in and had taken his medicine, Yunho changed out of his own wet clothes, grabbed a chair, and settled down next to the bed to keep watch Jaejoong.

Sitting at a bar, Heechul could not erase, no matter how hard he tried, what he had seen when he had gone to look for Yunho at his house.
He had wanted to hang out with Yunho but as he drove up to Yunho’s house, he saw Jaejoong falling into Yunho’s arms and Yunho running into his house with Jaejoong in his arms.
Sitting in his car, Heechul had not known what to do. He had wanted to run out of his car and take Jaejoong away from Yunho. He had wanted to be the one to catch Jaejoong but he had missed his chance.
Heechul was always one step behind so he would always be the one watching from afar.
Jaejoong had decided to run to Yunho in his time of need and not to him.
Jaejoong had chosen Yunho over him.
Maybe, it was fate’s doing.
Heechul knew he had to face the truth but not just yet. For just a little longer, he wanted to remain in this illusion that he still had a chance.
Just like some people say, 'Sometimes love can be magic, but sometimes magic is just an illusion.'
Heechul chuckled dryly at his own musing.
“You know kid, most people think that holding on makes you stronger but sometimes it’s letting go.” said the bartender as he handed Heechul another drink.
Even though these words might be true, Heechul did not want to let go. Not yet.
“My heart’s saying no but my head’s saying let go.” murmured Heechul before he fell asleep on the counter.
