Chapter 14: Something Wrong
'I can’t believe it’s Monday again. Where did the weekend go?' thought Yunho to himself as he walked towards his first class of the day with a half-asleep Heechul sluggishly walking beside him.
“Yunho,” called out Heechul midway through a yawn. “The weekend went by way too fast. I don’t want to be here.” he complained.
“My thoughts exactly.” grumbled Yunho as he turned his head sideways to look at Heechul.
“Can’t we just go home?” suggested Heechul, looking at Yunho with hopeful, half-lidded eyes. He pouted his lips out for added effect, hoping to convince Yunho to skip school but all his efforts were wasted.
“You know we can’t do that.” replied Yunho automatically, for he had never skipped a single class in his entire life.
Giving up, Heechul decided to change tactics. He rolled his eyes. “Yes, you and your principles.”
By this time, Heechul had fully awakened. He dramatically turned towards the other students in the hall and called out, “Mr. Jung Yunho would never miss a day of school for he is our model student!” as he swept his right hand in Yunho’s direction.
He then turned towards Yunho in a bow and mockingly said, “All hail Jung Yunho.” which earned him a hard smack to the head.
“Yah, if you’re going to embarrass yourself, don’t drag me down with you.” With that, Yunho left.
“Hey, stop, wait up for me!” called Heechul as he gathered himself and ran after Yunho. When he caught up with Yunho, his eyes met with Yunho’s and they burst out into a fit of laughter.
As they walked into the classroom still laughing, they spotted Yoochun and Junsu already sitting by their usual spot. However, before Yunho could take a step towards the couple, he felt a pair of hands cover his eyes.
“Guess who?” came a sugary-sweet voice that was much too excited for an early Monday morning.
Yunho was definitely not in the mood to play games. He said with an annoyed voice, “Seul Gi, I know it’s you.”
As if reading Yunho’s mind, Heechul joked, “Aren’t you too old to be playing these games?”
“Aw, come on Yunho. Stop being so grumpy,” whined Seul Gi as Yunho took her hands off his eyes. “Look, I even brought someone to surprise you.”
Before Yunho could turn around to see who Seul Gi was talking about, Yoochun shouted, “Changmin, what are you doing here?”
All four pairs of eyes turned expectantly towards Changmin who gave them a casual smile and wave. But as his eyes reached Yunho’s, he turned away. Seeing Yunho caused Changmin to think back to yesterday.
--------------------------------------- Flashback -------------------------------------------------------
After failing to accomplish what Seul Gi had commanded him to do, Changmin knew he had to think of something good to make her happy again. He contemplated over what he could buy for her to get her to talk to him again.
“Hmm…maybe Caron's Poivre perfume?” 'No, wait, I already bought her that last month.'
He continued to list other items such as Forizeri diamonds and Bottega Venetta but it dawned on him that he had already gotten her these things and many more.
His thoughts were interrupted by the 'Why don’t you kiss her…why don’t you tell her…why don’t you let her see the feelings that you hide? For she’ll never know…if you never show…the way you feel inside' ring tone of his cell phone.
Hearing this song made him even more depressed. He made a mental note to remind himself that he had to change his ring tone.
'Why don’t I tell her how I feel?' he thought to himself but he knew the answer. Changmin knew that she would not accept his feelings. He knew that she was just using him but he let her for this was how he was able to stay by her side.
If he didn’t tell her, then he could remain by her side and be there for her whenever she needed him. For he had helplessly fallen in love with the old Seul Gi and ever since then, his heart has been lost somewhere within hers. Even if he wanted it back, he knew he would never be able to piece it back together.
Not in the mood to answer his phone, he decided to continue to dwell in his misery, yet the song would not stop repeating.
Unable to stand the song any longer, he impatiently turned to shut off his phone but his eyes widened as he saw who the caller was. It was Seul Gi.
He quickly scrambled to answer the phone with an “I’m sorry” but was cut off by Seul Gi’s happy voice.
Changmin let out a sigh of relief as he felt himself smile for Seul Gi had forgiven him. Nevertheless, his smile was short lived. At the mention of Yunho’s name, Changmin’s smile fell.
'Why does she always talk to me about him? Doesn’t she know how I feel about her?'
“Changminnie-ah, I’m going out to eat with Yunho tonight. He promised me.” came Seul Gi’s gleeful voice.
“That’s great…” but his false enthusiasm faltered at the end.
Seul Gi did not notice the sadness in his tone; she was too caught up talking about how wonderful Yunho was.
“What color do you think I should wear Changminnie? Pink or white?”
“You should wear the pink-”
Before Changmin could finish his answer, she had already decided.
“I’m going to wear the white one because Yunho told me I look good in white.”
'I wanted to say pink because it brings out the color in your eyes but you only see Yunho in your eyes' Changmin sighed to himself.
This one-sided conversation continued for several more minutes before Seul Gi hung up without even listening to Changmin’s goodbye.
Changmin slumped onto his bed. He didn’t know how much longer he could keep up this pretense of being carefree.
Behind his cheery smiles lie silent tears that no one would ever see, that no one should ever see. However, for her, he would try his best to keep it up because it was all worth it if she was happy.
It was all worth it if she was happy, he kept reminding himself.
--------------------------------------- End Flashback -------------------------------------------------
As Changmin finished his reflection, he told them, “I decided to come visit you guys since I just got back from the States and don’t have classes today.”
Then he added with a silly smile, “Plus I promised I’d see you guys soon and I don’t break my promises.” He quickly stole a glance towards Seul Gi’s direction.
Yunho, Heechul, and Yoochun all laughed at how Changmin’s eyes were still mismatched whenever he smiled.
“Yah, stop laughing at me!” shouted Changmin for he had a good idea of what they were laughing at.
As she watched the boys fool around like in the old days, Seul Gi thought to herself 'I was brilliant to bring Changmin here today.'
Now she had another pawn to use at her disposal in this game that she was certain to win.
'On a side note, Yoochun seems weird. He seems happier than usual and has, what do you call this, “A glow?” '
Out of all this laughter came Junsu’s voice, “Hey, where’s Jae?”
At the mention of this name, Seul Gi tensed and a scowl formed on her face.
Breaking up from their joking around, Yunho and Heechul straightened up.
“We were about to ask you the same question.” they said.
“I don’t know where he is. I was with Yoochun all morning.” came Junsu’s soft reply as he looked at Yoochun with a smile and thought about their breakfast date.
It seemed like no one knew where Jaejoong was, but time did not let allow them to dwell on this for long because the professor entered the room.
A concerned look passed between the group but they concluded that Jaejoong was probably just sick or had something else to do.
The others were satisfied with this answer but for some reason, Yunho and Heechul were not convinced by this explanation. They felt as if something was wrong.
Before they could talk about it, their professor sent them a glance and they quickly settled into their seats and pretended to be interested in what the professor had to say.
Seul Gi thought that it was odd for Yunho to be listening this intently, but unbeknownst to her, Yunho’s thoughts were elsewhere, actually, his thoughts were on someone else.
