Chapter 13: Alone

After his shift ended without any more mishaps, Jaejoong dragged his exhausted body out of the restaurant. It was already well past midnight.

He walked as slowly as possible for his left leg still hurt from the fall earlier that day which had further injured his leg. That was just an excuse. The truth was, he did not want to go back to his so-called “home” because all that waited for him there was pain and loneliness.

Several minutes later, Jaejoong inevitably reached his front door. He stood staring at the front door. He took a deep breath as he reached his hand out. His hand shook as he timidly turned the doorknob and revealed the entrance to his “house.” Jaejoong knew he was walking directly into hell.

As he entered the house, Jaejoong heard a loud shattering sound as he saw remnants of a glass bottle that had shattered on the floor. Next to these shards were empty bottles of beer that had not been there when Jaejoong had left that morning. This had been the scene he dreaded to see for he knew that his stepfather was home, drunk, and ready to unleash his wrath on Jaejoong.

Jaejoong tried to escape back out the front door but his stepfather had already pulled him into the house. The front door shut with a loud slam as the whole frame shook.

His stepfather stood towering over Jaejoong for he was much taller and stronger than him. He made Jaejoong feel like he was five years old again: weak, helpless, and frightened.

Jaejoong tried to writher out from his stepfather’s grasp but his stepfather roughly grabbed him by the collar of his shirt and spit out menacingly, “Where are you going so late at night? Trying to escape from me?”

He leaned in closer and Jaejoong could smell the stench of alcohol reeking from his stepfather’s breath.

At times like this, Jaejoong automatically felt drained of all his energy. He knew that it was better to not resist because the harder he tried to escape, the more pain he found himself suffering. He had learned this the hard way. He had learned not to put up a fight when his stepfather was in such a state.

He felt powerless against his stepfather, yet he knew of no escape. He had no one to help him. In a world were people lied to get what they want and end up betraying the person who had given them their all, Jaejoong was alone. He had no one to lean on. All he could do was brace himself for what he knew was coming.

“You need to learn your place in this house!” shouted his drunken stepfather.

His stepfather used both hands and violently hurled him into the wall. Jaejoong felt his head snap back upon impact; however, he knew this was not the end. It was only the beginning.

The shock from the impact left him paralyzed. He tried to back as far away from his stepfather as possible but the walls entrapped him in a position of complete vulnerability. His futile effort was met with a kick to the stomach, which left him gasping for air.

“You’re useless just like your father. He was easily killed by a defenseless woman, your whore of a mother!”

At those words, Jaejoong felt tears forming in his eyes that he had been trying so hard to fight back but he would not give into what the man wanted. He would not shed these tears in front of a man who reveled in seeing him suffer. He would not show his weakness because this little bit of pride was all he had left to hold on to.

“Your mother killed your father because you were too weak to protect your mother. It’s your fault that your family broke apart. ALL. YOUR. FAULT.”

His stepfather pulled him up with one hand and backhanded him. The familiar iron taste of blood filled Jaejoong’s mouth. His body slumped to the ground as soon as his stepfather let go of his shirt.

“Your mother didn’t love you or else why would she suicide in front of you? She let you see her bleed.” Raged Jaejoong’s stepfather as he one again advanced on Jaejoong’s bruised body on the floor.

He continuously kicked Jaejoong’s fragile body until Jaejoong coughed up blood.

“Look at how pathetic you are. No one cares about you because you’re garbage. You’re trash that should never have been born. You shouldn’t even exist.”

His stepfather painfully pulled him by his hair and violently threw Jaejoong, head first, into the coffee table. Jaejoong felt something warm trickle down the back of his neck and soak the collar of his shirt. He pulled his shaking hand up to touch his head. When he titled his head to glance at his hand, it was coated with a deep, crimson red. This was a color that haunted him all his life, even in his dreams.

Without giving Jaejoong any time to dwell in his pain, his stepfather stepped on Jaejoong’s left leg, which he knew had been injured from yesterday’s beating.

Jaejoong’s face twisted from the agonizing pain while his stepfather grinned maliciously at the amount of pain he had inflicted on this useless person laying helplessly on the floor in front of him.

“I don’t even know why I put up with you. You’re not even worth my time.” With this, Jaejoong’s stepfather walked out of the house and slammed the door behind him.

Watching his stepfather leave, Jaejoong finally allowed the tears he had been hiding to fall from his emotionless eyes. The cut on his lower lip stun as the tears meandered down his gaunt face. This only made his tears fall harder.

It took all his strength to climb up the interminable flight of stairs. He immediately collapsed onto his bed. Jaejoong was too tired to clean himself up. He couldn’t help himself from thinking, 'When will I find an angel who will save me from this hell?'

With this thought in mind, Jaejoong felt his eyes close and he lost consciousness.
