Chapter 11: Mirrored Surprise
As Jaejoong looked up towards the familiar voice, he met eyes that mirrored his own surprise. Those eyes widened as their owner recognized Jaejoong’s face. Unknowingly, Jaejoong became a prisoner of those eyes. He couldn’t break free from their captivating features. As he stared straight into those deep, brown orbs, they seemed to be able to break all his pretenses and see straight to his soul. He never felt this feeling before. It was so foreign.
Jaejoong finally managed to snap himself out of this trance and called out in a shocked voice, “Yunho?”
His eyes then shifted to the figure behind Yunho, “Heechul?”
They stood there dumbfounded for several seconds before Changmin broke the silence. He turned towards Yunho and Heechul with a questioning look on his face. “You guys know this waiter?”
“Yeah, we go to the same college.” replied Heechul and Yunho.
This was met with another period of silence until a happy, higher-set voice pierced the awkward moment. “Jae! I promised I’d come to see you!”
Not sensing the current situation, the same voice continued with a giggle, “Look who I brought with me!”
Jaejoong immediately recognized the new voice. He knew it belonged to none other than his newly found friend, Junsu. 'Junsu?' thought Jaejoong to himself as he noticed the man next to Junsu, 'and Yoochun?'
Junsu smiled as he used his free hand to point towards Yoochun since his other hand was currently entwined with Yoochun’s. Said man raised his eyebrows as he asked, “Changmin?”
Before Changmin could respond, Yoochun had broken free from Junsu’s grasp and embraced Changmin in a hug.
Now Jaejoong, Junsu, and the manager were all equally confused.
'Wow, this is just getting more and more complicated.' thought Jaejoong to himself as he stared at everyone in front of him. 'What is going on?'
Junsu gave Changmin, who was still in Yoochun’s arms, a look of suspicion as he turned to glare at Yoochun with his arms on his hips. “Park Yoochun, who is this?”
Yoochun immediately let go of Changmin and smiled to himself as he could clearly hear the jealous tone of Junsu’s voice.
“Junsu, this is my good friend and cousin Shim Changmin,” informed Yoochun sweetly as he placed extra emphasis on the word cousin. “We practically grew up together. Ask Heechul and Yunho.” He turned to Heechul and Yunho for support.
“Yeah, those two were inseparable when we first met them.” replied Heechul and Yunho in unison.
This answer seemed to satisfy Junsu as he returned his attention to Jaejoong who still looked confused.
Yoochun re-entwined his left hand with Junsu’s.
'Ah, I see.' smiled Jae inwardly as he noticed the blush on Junsu’s face at Yoochun’s gesture.
As Jaejoong looked to his left, he saw his manager shoot him a quizzical glance. Neither knew what was going on between the five guys in front of them.
“Jae, what are you doing here?” asked an innocent Heechul.
Jaejoong swept his hand across his uniform and waited for the light bulb to go off in Heechul’s head.
Heechul gave a sheepish grin accompanied with an “oh…” as he mentally kicked himself for looking like such a moron in front of Jaejoong.
“Heechul, you always were one step behind.” joked Yunho as the tense atmosphere finally broke.
“Jae, what’s going on here?” questioned Junsu.
“Oh, I accidentally spilled some soup on Changmin-shi’s suit when I tripped over something.” answered Jaejoong.
All eyes shifted from Jaejoong to Changmin.
“Changmin, why are you causing such a scene?” asked Yunho as he patted Changmin on the back with a goofy grin on his face.
Catching on to what Yunho was aiming for, Heechul added with a smile, “Yeah, he’s our friend. Just let this go.”
With the arrival of all these new people, Changmin gave an uneasy glance towards a table on his right side but no one noticed this. A few seconds passed before he nodded his head in self-reassurance before returning his gaze to Yunho and Heechul.
Looking at the two smiling faces of his friends, Changmin did not have the heart to say no. With a sigh of resignation, he put his hands up and surrendered. “Alright, fine. Just for you guys.”
As an after thought, he decided to add, “Plus, I had a feeling Yoochun’s ‘friend’ over there probably wouldn’t let me do anything anyways.” He turned towards his cousin with a playful smile on his face.
“Yah, Changmin. Don’t joke about your older cousin like that,” shouted Yoochun as he lightly shoved Changmin. Then he glanced at Junsu who was still trying to decipher what Changmin had meant.
Finally understanding the meaning behind Changmin’s words, Junsu felt another blush creep onto his face. 'When did I become so girly?' thought Junsu to himself.
Seeing that everything was under control, Yoochun announced that he and Junsu were going to continue with their shopping.
“For watches?” was the unified answer from Heechul and Yunho.
“Shut up!” retorted Yoochun as he laughingly pulled Junsu out of the restaurant.
After Yoochun and Junsu’s exit, Changmin turned to the manager and said, “I’ll let this go this time Manager…” Changmin paused to look at the man’s nametag, “…Lee but don’t let this happen again.”
“Happy?” he asked as he turned back towards the guys.
They just continued with their stupid looking smiles. “Yup.”
The manager quickly pulled Jaejoong down in a ninety-degree bow in appreciation of Changmin’s kindness. “I assure you, I won’t let this happen again.”
“I’ll see you guys around.” called out Changmin. With this, he left.
Glad that the situation had been solved, the manager’s voice once again returned to its commanding tone as he pulled Jaejoong up from the bow. “Kim Jaejoong, get back to work. There are still tables waiting to be served. You’ve already caused enough trouble for today. You had better be careful!” With that the manager left leaving Jaejoong with Yunho and Heechul.
Jaejoong quickly nodded his head in response as he took a step towards the kitchen yet his left foot faltered. Jaejoong braced himself for the hard impact yet he never felt the cold floor against his face. Instead, he felt two reassuring arms supporting him. He opened his eyes and noticed two pairs of worried eyes.
“Jae, are you okay?” came Heechul’s concerned voice.
“What happened? Did you hurt your leg?” added Yunho.
Jaejoong quickly reassured them that he was okay. “It’s no big deal. I just lost my balance.”
He brushed off their hands as he hastily stood up. This sudden motion caused him to grimace as pain once again shot through his leg but he managed to remain standing on his own feet. He didn’t want to depend on others because he could only trust himself.
“Thanks,” said Jaejoong as he turned to walk away.
Yunho and Heechul could both sense that Jaejoong did not want their help so they remained motionless as they watched Jaejoong slowly limp towards the kitchen.
As he walked away, Jaejoong turned back and said, “I guess I’ll see you guys Monday.” And with that, they parted ways.
A pair of angry eyes watched from behind tinted glasses as Yunho and Heechul left the restaurant with content expressions on their faces.
'How could Changmin not follow through with our plan? It was so simple. All he had to do was get Jaejoong fired. That was all I wanted him to do!' thought the girl to herself. Then her cell phone rang. The caller ID displayed 'Changmin'.
Angrily flipping her phone open. “Changmin! How could you fail? Your job was so easy. I thought you said you would do anything for me. How can I believe you if you can’t even do this simple little task for me?”
“I tried but I just couldn’t do it. Not in front of Heechul, Yunho, and Yoochun. Especially Yoochun.” reasoned Changmin.
“I don’t care about your excuses. I never want to talk to you again!” shouted the fuming voice as she slammed the phone closed for the more she thought about the failure of her plan, the more irritated she became. Unable to contain her rage, her fist collided with the wood table in front of her. She angrily stormed out of Sorriso Trattoria as she thought over what had just happened.
If she had not slammed the phone closed, she would have heard a softly murmured, “I’m sorry Seul Gi.” from the sad voice on the other side.
