Chapter 20: My Escape
Jaejoong made his way to the front door of where he lived.
---------------------------------------------- Flashback ------------------------------------------------
“Jae, where do you want me to drop you off?”
“…”
“Don’t tell me you forgot where you live.” joked Yunho.
“Um…you can just drop me off by the restaurant. I don’t live too far from there.”
“Are you sure? It’s pretty late already. I don’t mind driving you home.”
“No, it’s okay. I like getting some fresh air anyways.”
“Alright, we’re almost there then.”
Pulling up by the curb, Yunho stopped the car and waited for Jaejoong to get out.
“Thanks for today Yunho. I’ll see you around.”
“No problem.” After a pause, Yunho looked at the sky and added, “Be careful Jae. It’s supposed to rain tonight.”
“No worries, I can take care of myself Yunho.” Jaejoong turned and walked away from the car.
--------------------------------------------End Flashback ---------------------------------------------
A slight smile lingered on his lips as he remembered how safe he felt with Yunho next to him. He was so caught up in his thoughts that he had forgotten about the monster in the guise of a human beyond the door that was slowly coming into view.
He opened the door and his smile immediately fell from his face. There stood his stepfather leaning against the kitchen counter with a smile on his face, no, not a smile but a contortion of the lips that turned into a taunting sneer.
Jaejoong’s stomach clenched in fear. He fists were clenched so tightly that his nails dug angry half moons into his palms.
“So, Jaejoong, how was your day?”
Hearing his stepfather’s rough voice attempting to sound caring sickened Jaejoong.
This scene was all too familiar to Jaejoong. Looking down, Jaejoong replied, “How much money do you want?”
“Oh, how could you say that? I can’t believe you think of me like that.” These few words were filled with false hurt.
This was met with silence.
Jaejoong bit his tongue to push back the words that he knew better than to say.
His stepfather took a step closer as he said with the 'smile' still plastered on his face, “So, I heard you’ve made some new friends at school, including Jung Yunho. I’ve also heard that he’s rather rich.”
Jaejoong’s eyes widened at the mention of Yunho’s name. He wondered how his stepfather knew so much about what was going on in his life.
“Jung Yunho? I don’t know who you’re talking about.” lied Jaejoong.
Within seconds, his stepfather had him pinned up against the wall. “Don’t you dare lie to me Kim Jaejoong!” he threatened. “I know you know him.”
Jaejoong knew that his stepfather had seen through his lie and that it was pointless to keep pretending. “What do you want with Yunho? Leave him out of this.” Surprising himself, his voice came out with confidence, not showing any of the fear he felt.
His stepfather let him go and smoothed out the collar of his shirt. “What I need for you to do is actually rather simple. All I need you to do is get a little bit of money from Jung Yunho. He has too much money for his own good. Plus he’s your friend so it won’t be hard.”
“No.”
“What did you say?”
“I said ‘no'! I’m not doing this anymore! You can’t control me. I’m a human being too!” lashed out Jaejoong. All the pent up hurt, frustration, and anger broke free.
“You ungrateful fool!” seethed his stepfather as his anger overtook him, turning him back into the true fiend he was.
“I’m leaving this house! I’m leaving this life! I’m leaving you! I hate you!” shouted Jaejoong. The fear that he once felt was replaced with anger.
Anger at his stepfather for hurting him.
Anger at himself for never fighting back.
Anger at all the lies he was told.
Anger at all the empty promises that he so desperately wanted to believe.
With his new found anger, Jaejoong made a bold move and bolted towards the door but his stepfather grabbed him and pulled him back with enough force that caused Jaejoong to fall.
“You’re not going anywhere.” His voice was menacing, frightening.
Jaejoong fell onto the coffee table which resulted in a firework of shattered glass.
He instinctively reached out his hands to break his fall. His left arm landed on the cascade of glass on the floor sending a sharp pain shooting up through his arm. Jaejoong ignored the pain as he saw the approaching figure. He quickly scrambled to get up.
“You can’t escape me. You have no one.” reminded his stepfather.
“No, your wrong.” whispered the injured Jaejoong.
For the first time, Jaejoong retaliated. He swung his right arm at his stepfather’s face and made contact with his left cheek. Caught of guard, his stepfather stumbled backwards. Seeing a window of opportunity, Jaejoong dashed out through the front door. He ran and didn’t look back.
As he ran, he could hear the threats coming from behind.
“I’ll find you no matter where you go Kim Jaejoong, and when I do, I swear, I’ll kill you with my own hands!”
Not minding the pain in his arm, Jaejoong kept running, his heart pounding. The tears he had held back for so long streamed down his face. He had no control over them.
As he continued to run, rain slowly began falling from the dark sky. The raindrops mixed with his tears. Jaejoong now remembered why he loved the rain so much. When it was raining, no one could tell he was crying.
He ran without a destination. He ran wherever his tired legs carried him.
He didn’t know how long he had been running but when he finally stopped, his legs had unknowingly brought him to, none other than, the Jung’s residence.
Gasping for breath, Jaejoong stared up at the dimly lit structure.
His eyes fell upon the large, closed iron gates that surrounded the mansion within.
Standing in front of such a magnificent mansion made him feel insignificant. He felt out of place, like he didn’t belong. He and Yunho were from two different worlds and he didn’t want to intrude Yunho’s perfect life.
Everything around him became blurry for a second. He took in a ragged breath to steady himself and turned away to leave.
