I joined this community years ago and forgot about it... imagine my surprise when searching LJ for communities to help me, not only was this comm still active, but my nav bar told me I was a member... ^^; Hello! There's a mysterious tree in my yard (that we never put there) and it's gotten out of control. Can anyone help me identify it?

When I moved into my house in 2006, this dogwood was half dead - I removed the entire center and assiduously plucked every leaf thereafter that started to show a black spot. I gave my mom a small Cassia Surattenis two years ago for her birthday (November) I did purchase a smaller than desired plant (5 gallon) as they were hard to find that year. Since planting it two years ago it has bloomed with its amaizing yellow flowers in fall and summer but it has not grown. It is supposed to grow to 12-15 feet and it is supposed ( Read more... )

This spring, something I've been waiting for for years has happened: the laburnum, AKA golden chain, tree is blooming. This is a big deal to me because I grew this plant from a seed. I just moved this winter and now that spring is coming in, I uncovered what the previous owners had planted. I'm not sure what some of it is though because apart from container roses and a few houseplants, I'm new to gardening. I live in Iowa, zone 5.
