I just purchased these beautiful Gazanias at my local Gardening center. What I am wondering is, should I fertilize their soil? And if so, how often and what type of fertilizer do you all suggest I use? I gave my mom a small Cassia Surattenis two years ago for her birthday (November) I did purchase a smaller than desired plant (5 gallon) as they were hard to find that year. I have passed my local fruit stand on trash day a few times and noticed some small wooden slat crates that used to hold fruit and herbs on the pile. Well, today was the day. My wonderful boyfriend came to the store with me to pick up all of my supplies and load them in the car for me. The instructions state to mix so much MG in so much water, but can I just broadcast a smaller amount of MG on the ground and then turn on my sprinkler? Of course taking care not to get it on leaves. This would save me SO many trips back and forth to the spout with my pail of water ( Read more... )

I would like to plant sweet peas this spring. I have not so great top soil & I was wondering if anyone had any particular favourite amendments that work well for sweet peas.

I've heard they love shredded leaves, added to the soil in autumn to break down ready for spring but I don't have that option!

Let me say right off the bat I feel completely foolish asking this question.

My garden is enclosed with livestock 2" x4" welded mesh about 4.5' high to keep out two-footed varmints with opposable thumbs, if you get my drift.
The neighborhood cats no longer bother trying to get in to use any soft, bare earth as their...convenience.

I have a blueberry bush and a raspberry bush I need to get in the ground.  I'm in zone 3a, so winter is fast approaching.  I've been told by one person not to use any fertilizer because I don't want to encourage growth of any sort at this time and by someone else to use starter fertilizer to encourage root development before the ground freezes.  ( Read more... )
