This is one of my favorite dishes, high on the grease and protein and pastry goodness. I first found the recipe in Cariadoc's Miscellany, a compendium of Medieval recipes by David Friedman. The whole chicken takes hours to cook. It's amazing, but very slow. So I make small meat tarts with the same ingredients instead.
