Bombshell... my sister is moving to Atlanta. They decided about a week or so ago and she and the whole family pick up and go Dec 26th. Whew. On the good side, this has kept my mom busy -- helping with their house (they hope to sell it at an upcoming open house) and taking care of the kids. Talked to my mother last night and she says that my dad is now awake, "talking" (he's trached again, so he mouths words) and whatnot. She sounded very down cause he was saying more "wacky" things and also was really needy. We went to get my new "foster" yesterday! It was an all-day trip to get to him from the person who'd had him previously. She knew the owners, who were soooo sad to give this bird up, but their job is moving them to an avian-flu positive asian country for a substantial amount of time (decade+) and they just couldn't take the bird with them ( Read more... )

We did the massive exam of Tiel Invasion birds today. The vet was very nice and she was very happy to share information on all sorts of topics. (Got some hints for helping Kiwi.) We did blood draws on 18 cockatiels and 2 Indian Ringnecks, and the vet will run standard tests on all of them and then a few will have more extensive work-ups. She ( Read more... )

Nicky went to her new home this evening. She was a great bird to have as a foster. I'm so happy I was able to work with her and that she trusted me enough to become a bird who liked to be out of her cage, interact with people, and eat better and different foods. Nicky came out of her cage all on her own today! This is a big deal for her, as she is still fairly cage-bound. I've been working on it with her since she arrived, and she has become better, but, it is still generally the rule that you could leave her cage open day and night and she'd never come out. Little Nicky suddenly has a lot of suitors. Got an application from someone who I think is likely not the right home for her (too many other pets) and as that person was gently steered away toward another TBD bird, I heard that there's a couple who may be interested in taking her.
